Texas kicks off first primary of 2014 midterms

(CNN) – The midterm election season officially gets underway Tuesday, as Texas holds the first primary contests of 2014.

The voting in the Lone Star State comes eight months to the day before Election Day in November. Here are some things to watch:

Texas ban on same-sex marriage struck down

(CNN) – A federal judge has struck down a ban on same-sex marriage in Texas, ruling Wednesday it has no "rational relation to a legitimate government purpose."

The decision is the latest in a series of federal and state court moves to overturn current laws forbidding gay and lesbians from legal wedlock.

Texas Gov. race: Davis outraises Abbott in the last month

(CNN) - Democrat Wendy Davis outraised Republican Greg Abbott in the last month in the Texas gubernatorial to race to succeed outgoing GOP Gov. Rick Perry.

Davis' campaign announced Monday that it raised $2.85 million between January 24 and February 22, compared to Abbott's reported $2.45 million over the same period.

Perry: Nugent's comments ‘shouldn't surprise anybody'

(CNN) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry is playing down a controversial campaign appearance for the Lone Star State’s leading Republican gubernatorial candidate by rocker Ted Nugent, who has stirred outrage with controversial comments about President Barack Obama.

"The idea that Ted Nugent has said something that's outrageous shouldn't surprise anybody. He's been saying outrageous things for a lot of years,” Perry told Wolf Blitzer on Thursday on CNN’s "The Situation Room.”

Cruz disagrees with Nugent, but doesn't rule out campaigning with him

Beaumont, Texas (CNN)  GOP Senator Ted Cruz told CNN he doesn't agree with 65 year old rocker Ted Nugent's explosive comments – calling President Obama a "subhuman mongrel" –  but the Texas Republican would not rule out campaigning with Nugent in the future.

"Those sentiments there, of course, I don't agree with them. You've never heard me say such a thing and nor would I," Cruz told CNN in an exclusive interview.

Ted Nugent hits campaign trail after calling Obama 'subhuman mongrel'

Updated 5:06 p.m. ET, 2/18/2014

(CNN) - Controversial 65-year-old rock star Ted Nugent is campaigning Tuesday with likely Texas GOP gubernatorial nominee Greg Abbott, the state's current attorney general who makes no apologies for inviting Nugent on the trail with him.

Democrats were quick to point to Nugent's outlandish comments, with likely Democratic gubernatorial nominee Wendy Davis calling Abbott's decision "repulsive."

Wendy Davis supports medical marijuana

(CNN) – Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis said she supports medical marijuana use as well easing the state's legal consequences for possessing small amounts of the drug.

Davis' comments echo those of current Republican Gov. Rick Perry, who said he supports less stringent penalties in Texas for marijuana use.
