Money pours in for Texas governor’s race

(CNN) – The Texas gubernatorial race is already turning into a high-dollar contest.

Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis' team reported Tuesday raising $12.2 million in the second half of last year.

Billionaire GOP donor dies at 82

(CNN) – Harold Simmons, a Texas billionaire, philanthropist, and major GOP donor, died Saturday. He was 82.

His death was confirmed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, and state Attorney General Greg Abbott, in separate statements.

Houston mayor a big supporter, but Wendy Davis has tough road ahead in governor’s race

Washington (CNN) – Houston Democratic Mayor Annise Parker is pulling hard for state Senator Wendy Davis for Texas governor, but acknowledges it is still a “red state” and her fellow Democrat has a tough fight ahead of her.

Appearing in Washington this week, Parker expressed strong support for Davis, saying “it is possible” for her to win.

Supreme Court won't block Texas abortion law

(CNN) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stop Texas from implementing a part of a new abortion law that requires doctors to get admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic where they're providing abortion services.

A federal appeals court had reinstated the key part of the law, which is considered among the most restrictive in the country.

Wendy Davis supports abortion-rights but goal is 'zero'

(CNN) - Texas state Sen. and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis continues to support women's abortion rights but she wants to reduce the number of abortions, she told a CNN affiliate Monday.

"The goal that we should have is that we see zero abortions," Davis told KGBT. "But in order to achieve that goal we have to make sure that women are receiving the kind of healthcare and planning that they deserve."

Cornyn announces re-election bid

(CNN) – Sen. John Cornyn, the Senate's second-ranking Republican, kicked off his re-election campaign on Friday at an event in Austin where he was joined by Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

"Texas is the model for the rest of the country, and we need to make the rest of the country more like Texas–not the other way around," Cornyn said.

Local Houston election winner denies race deception claims

(CNN) - The winner of a tight local election in a mostly African-American community in Houston on Monday denied assertions that he deceived voters into thinking he was black.

Dave Wilson, who is white, edged out 24-year incumbent Bruce Austin by 26 votes, 5,961-5,935 to become the District II representative for the Houston Community College System board of trustees, according to the local election board.

Wendy Davis files for Texas governor

(CNN) - Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis’s formal Texas gubernatorial campaign kicked off with the filing of campaign documents Saturday, the first day she was able to do so.

According to CNN affiliate KVUE, Davis and her likely Republican opponent, state Attorney General Greg Abbott, each filed campaign paperwork in Austin.
