(CNN) – The Houston Chronicle took freshman Sen. Ted Cruz to task in a new editorial, saying his predecessor would have been better suited for the ongoing gridlock on Capitol Hill.

"Does anyone else miss Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison?" the editorial stated.

Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis announces bid for gov.

(CNN) – After weeks of buildup, Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis formally kicked off a bid for governor Thursday on the same stage where she graduated from high school.

"All of you deserve to have your voices heard. Because our future is brightest when it's lit by everyone's star," Davis told an ebullient crowd of supporters. "That's why today, I am proud to announce my candidacy to be the 48th governor of this great state."

(CNN) – Wendy Davis is expected to go public Thursday with some news that everyone in politics already knows: She's running for governor of Texas.

The state senator from Fort Worth electrified Democrats in June by slipping on a pair of pink Mizunos and a back brace to stage a dramatic 11-hour filibuster of a Republican bill that drastically scaled back abortion rights in the state. Never mind that the bill eventually passed in a special legislative session: Democrats around the country were in full swoon mode.

Texas abortion law challenged in Planned Parenthood lawsuit

(CNN) - A federal lawsuit filed Friday seeks to overturn portions of Texas' new abortion law, considered among the most restrictive legislation in the nation, just weeks before it takes effect.

The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Austin by Planned Parenthood on behalf of more than a dozen women's health care providers across Texas alleges the law violates the constitutional rights of women and puts unreasonable demands on doctors who perform abortions.

Washington (CNN) – State Sen. Wendy Davis of Texas will run for governor next year, two Democratic sources familiar with the planning confirmed to CNN.

The Democrat, who gained national fame after her 13-hour filibuster over a controversial abortion bill, was already scheduled to make an announcement about her political future on October 3.

(CNN) - While many New York Giants fans in New Jersey will be cheering for their home team on Sunday, their governor will be in Texas rooting for the other side, the Dallas Cowboys.

Christie, a loyal Cowboys fan, will attend the teams' opening game while he's in the Lone Star State for three Republican National Committee fundraisers.

Silly season: Cruz jokes he's from Ethiopia

(CNN) – Sen. Ted Cruz cracked a joke about the recent stir over his place of birth on Thursday, just days after pledging to renounce his Canadian citizenship.

"I promise that while y'all are out I'll try not to give any like really juicy piece of crazy news," Cruz told reporters as they were exiting an event where he was about to speak in a private session, according to the Houston Chronicle. "I am secretly a citizen of Ethiopia."

Feds sue to stop Texas voter ID law

(CNN) - The U.S. Justice Department said Thursday that it will file a lawsuit seeking to stop a controversial Texas law that would require voters to show identification at voting booths.

The department wants a court to declare that the law, passed in 2011, violates part of the federal Voting Rights Act and voting guarantees provided in the 14th and 15th Amendments.

Texas lieutenant governor calls to get relative out of jail

(CNN) – Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst of Texas is coming under some fire after using his name and position as he sought the release of a relative accused of shoplifting, all the while arguing she was arrested on a "mistaken charge."

The Allen Police Department on Wednesday released audio of a phone call from the lieutenant governor that took place at 10:30 p.m. on August 3.
