White House: Debt deadline looming

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The White House made clear Tuesday that August 2 remains the deadline for Congress to extend the federal debt ceiling, with Press Secretary Jay Carney telling reporters "beyond that date, we lose our capacity to borrow."

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner "has exercised all the wiggle room available to him" to extend the ability of the government to pay its bills since the nation hit its debt limit in May, Carney said.

U.S. debt ceiling debate must be settled now, Geithner says

Washington (CNN) – Congress must reach a deal now to raise the federal debt ceiling through 2012 because "you don't want politics messing around with America's faith and credit," Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner told CNN on Sunday.

"The most important thing is that we remove this threat of default from the country for the next 18 months," Geithner said in an interview with CNN's "State of the Union" program. "You want to take this out of politics.

Geithner: We need a deal by next week

Washington (CNNMoney) - Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said Tuesday that he wants a deal to raise the debt ceiling and cut the budget by the end of this week - or next week at the latest - to give Congress enough time to turn the deal into law.

"We know we don't have a lot of time, and we want to wrap up the broad outlines of the agreement by the end of this week, certainly by the end of next week," Geithner said at the Women in Finance Symposium at the Treasury Department.

Geithner: GOP using 'political theater'

(CNN) – Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Sunday that those who oppose raising the U.S. debt ceiling under any circumstance are just playing politics.

"It's a political moment, people are trying to get attention, they say really amazing things," Geithner told the CBS program "Face the Nation." "But there's no credible argument, no responsible leader would say the United States of America, for the first time in its history, should not pay its bills or meet its obligations."

American Sauce: Debt Ceiling Limbo

Capitol Hill (CNN) – How exactly is the Treasury Department keeping the U.S. going, after the country has hit the national debt limit? A debt limit means no additional net borrowing - at a time when the federal government pays roughly 40% of its bills precisely through borrowing.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner calls the answer "extraordinary measures". Financial juggling is another way to say it.

This week, American Sauce lays out exactly what the Treasury is doing to limbo under the debt limit and buy Congress about two months of time to find an answer.
