IG letter to Geithner: Targeting not among top concerns

(CNN) - Treasury officials were made aware in June 2012 that the IRS inspector general was reviewing the office that handles tax-exempt applications, but a letter from October shows that the inspector general did not highlight the audit as a top concern for the agency.

In a memo dated October 15, 2012, to then-Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner about IRS challenges for 2013, Inspector General J. Russell George noted other problem areas, but made no mention of the investigation taking place at the time of the agency's intense scrutiny of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.

Lew: What the would-be Treasury chief is worth

Washington (CNNMoney) - Jack Lew, the nominee to be the next Treasury Secretary, would be among the least wealthy to hold the job in recent history, even though he had a short tenure on Wall Street.

That's partly due to the fact that, as an investor, he's quite conservative.

Washington (CNN) - The Treasury Department will unveil President Barack Obama's corporate tax reform plan Wednesday - a framework that would reduce the overall rate paid by corporations, a senior administration official told CNN.

The President's tax plan is intended to "enhance American competitiveness by simplifying the tax code and eliminating dozens of tax loopholes and subsidies, incentivizing job creation and investment here at home and lowering the business rate while broadening the tax base," the official said.
