
(CNN) - Ahead of Mitt Romney's Memorial Day appearance with Sen. John McCain in California Monday, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee released a new web video thanking military troops and veterans.
"A lot of young Americans are risking their lives in distant battlefields today," Romney said in a statement. "Memorial Day is a day to give thanks to them, and to remember all of America's soldiers who have laid down their lives to defend our country. As we enjoy our barbecues with friends and families and loved ones, let's keep them in our thoughts and in our prayers."

(CNN) - As Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama take a campaign break to pay tribute on Memorial Day, a poll released Monday indicates the presumptive GOP presidential nominee has a big lead over Obama among veterans.
Fifty-eight percent of veterans support Romney, while 34% back the president, according to a new Gallup survey.

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) – Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann backed out of a scheduled appearance at a candidate forum sponsored by Veterans for a Strong America in Des Moines on Saturday.
Bachmann skipped the event to prepare for Saturday night's Republican presidential debate in Iowa, said her spokeswoman Alice Stewart. The candidate's husband, Marcus Bachmann, spoke in her stead.
