With VA, Obama management style under fire again

Washington (CNN) - The White House is once again brushing aside questions about President Barack Obama's management style.

Amid the growing scandal over the apparent cover-up of patient wait times at some Veterans Affairs facilities, Republicans and even some Democrats have complained Obama's public posture has been detached, relying too heavily on VA Secretary Eric Shinseki.

House committee chair calls VA response 'unacceptable'

Washington (CNN) - House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller says the response by the Department of Veterans Affairs to a subpoena from his committee over allegations of deadly health care delays has been "very weak" and "unacceptable."

The Florida Republican told CNN that if the embattled agency doesn't provide more details about the information sought earlier this month, the committee could move to hold the VA in contempt.

Carney: President first learned about VA allegations from CNN report

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama first learned through news reports on CNN about accusations that officials at a Veterans Affairs medical facility in Phoenix had allegedly used fraudulent lists to conceal wait times for veterans receiving care, a top White House spokesman said Monday.

"If you mean the specific allegations that I think were first reported by your network out of Phoenix I believe, we learned about them through the reports," White House press secretary Jay Carney said in reference to CNN's story on April 23.

Top White House aide takes on Veterans Affairs review

(CNN) – A top aide to President Barack Obama will assist officials at the Department of Veterans Affairs conduct a review of agency procedures after accusations of deadly delays in care at some hospitals.

Obama said he had tasked Rob Nabors, his deputy chief of staff, to assist VA leaders, including Secretary Eric Shinseki, in conducting their audit of clinics nationwide.

"America has a sacred trust with the men and women who serve our country in uniform - one that continues when they come home - and we must do everything to keep that trust," Obama said in a statement Wednesday, adding it was essential "we get to the bottom of what happened" at a VA hospital in Phoenix, where some veterans died while waiting for care.

First lady announces support for military caregivers

(CNN) - First Lady Michelle Obama hosted caregivers of veterans and active duty service members in the East Room of the White House on Friday to recognize the efforts of wounded military caregivers and to bring together support for her continuing initiative, known as "Joining Forces."

Friday's event marked the 3rd anniversary of the "Joining Forces" initiative, a cause the first lady and Dr. Jill Biden have championed since President Barack Obama's first term.

GOP pushes for accountability bill in VA reform in weekly address

(CNN) - Republicans in their weekly address Saturday slammed the Department of Veterans Affairs for keeping soldiers waiting for their disability checks.

In calling for support of the VA Management Accountability Act, Rep. Jackie Walorski associated crippling bureaucracy in the agency to preventable deaths of patients waiting for their paper work to go through.

Vets bill fails in Senate, victim of election-year gridlock

Washington (CNN) - A Democratic bill designed to make numerous improvements to services for veterans failed in the Senate Thursday, a victim of the partisan gridlock and election-year acrimony that dominates the chamber.

On a largely party-line vote, 56 to 41, the measure didn’t get the 60 votes it needed to clear a procedural hurdle.

Bush says working with vets helps him cope

(CNN) – Asked whether President George W. Bush's work with veterans helps him cope with what happened in Afghanistan and Iraq - two wars that started during his presidency - the former President said there's "no question it helps."

"I have a duty," he continued in an interview that aired Sunday on ABC's "The Week." "Obviously, I get slightly emotional talking about our vets, because I have an emotional - I'm in there with them.
