With deadline looming, Obama to again push infrastructure

Washington (CNN) — Once again using some of the nation’s deteriorating infrastructure as his backdrop, President Barack Obama this week plans to pressure lawmakers into finding a way to keep money flowing to road and bridge projects before funding dries up next month.

It’s a message he’s pushed in front of crumbling bridges and at the White House since the beginning of the summer, often using the issue to blast Republicans on Capitol Hill, who he said could be responsible for massive layoffs and stalled projects should a plan to replenish the Highway Trust Fund not materialize before next month.

Perry to Texas reps: Don't approve Obama's border proposal

Washington (CNN) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry said he won’t encourage his state’s congressional delegation to approve President Obama’s request for $3.7 billion in emergency funds to mitigate the border crisis.

“The President doesn't have to have this big amount of money,” Perry told Fox News Channel’s Brit Hume. “He could pick up the phone today, call the (Defense Department) and direct them to have the 1,000 National Guard troops on the border.”

After meeting with Perry last week in Texas, Obama said he had asked the Texas governor to use his influence to urge the Texas congressional delegation to support the emergency funding request.

Obama requested the money to deal with a growing number of undocumented children and youths arriving in the U.S. illegally and overwhelming federal facilities. While many have been released to family pending deportation hearings, others have been detained by authorities amid a growing backlog of pending cases.

O'Malley: U.S. shouldn't send immigrant children back to 'certain death'

(CNN) - Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley advocated for sympathy for the surge of young Central American immigrants flooding the U.S. southern border, arguing that to turn the children away without due process would be un-American given what violence awaits in their home countries.

"We are not a country that should turn children away and send them back to certain death," he told reporters Friday at a National Governors Association meeting in Nashville.
