CNN Poll: Obama's numbers not great but holding steady

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama's poll numbers are nothing to brag about, but there's little evidence he has suffered so far this year a "Katrina moment" that caused his predecessor's numbers to plummet.

A new CNN/ORC International survey indicates that public opinion of the President has barely budged in the wake of new challenges that Obama has faced this year.

White House revises contraception opt out

,

(CNN) – The Obama administration announced revisions to the Obamacare contraception mandate so that nonprofit religious organizations can opt out of signing a release form to avoid covering birth control and workers for those nonprofits are able to obtain separate contraception coverage without a copay.

"This is part of ensuring that all women have access to contraception coverage," said a senior administration official.

Earlier this month the Supreme Court issued a temporary order that allows Wheaton College to avoid covering birth control without filing a religious exemption form with its insurer. The new revisions to the Obamacare mandate reveal that the White House is anticipating the U.S. Supreme Court's finalization of the temporary injunction in the coming months.

Acknowledging global unrest, Obama forges ahead with fundraising swing

,

SEATTLE (CNN) - As President Barack Obama helped Democrats bank millions in campaign cash on Tuesday, he acknowledged his administration is confronting "some big overseas challenges" in the Middle East, Ukraine and elsewhere.

Speaking at a fundraiser in a wealthy enclave of Seattle, Obama said there is a sense among Americans "that around the world the old order isn't holding and we're not quite where we need to be in terms of a new order that's based on a different set of principles."

Overseas, Israel continues its ground invasion of Gaza and investigators continue to probe the downing of a Malaysia Air jetliner over Ukraine. Some Republicans and pundits have chastised Obama for maintaining his three-day fundraising swing on the West Coast, though his aides argue the President can do his job from anywhere.

Analyst claims some information on Lerner’s hard drive was retrievable

Washington (CNN) – In a development that contradicts statements by the IRS commissioner, Republican investigators say they have learned that former agency official Lois Lerner's computer hard drive was only "scratched" and some information on it was likely recoverable at one point.

Commissioner John Koskinen told the House Ways and Means Committee last month that Lerner's hard drive had been recycled so the agency was unable to pull emails that the panel wants as part of its investigation of IRS targeting of political groups.

Prospects for border legislation in doubt

Washington (CNN) - Prospects for passage of a plan to address the southern border crisis before Congress leaves for its summer recess were in doubt Tuesday as Republican congressional leaders blasted President Barack Obama for not engaging them and the top Senate Democrat dismissed GOP proposals as “crazy.”

Against that contentious backdrop, Senate Democrats unveiled a slimmed down $2.7 billion emergency spending bill that lacks key changes to border policies that Republicans have demanded as a condition for approving new funds.
