Burke passes on public appearance with Obama - again

(CNN) – Mary Burke, Wisconsin's Democratic nominee for governor, will not appear in public with Barack Obama when the President travels to Milwaukee on Monday to mark Labor Day in the key 2014 battleground state.

The President and Burke are both scheduled to attend Milwaukee's annual "Laborfest" celebration, a gathering of union activists that play a critical organizing role in Democratic politics.

Labor's Trumka: Hillary Clinton is 'very, very qualified to be president'

Washington (CNN) - Richard Trumka is not ready to endorse Hillary Clinton for president in 2016. But that may be because, as he says, "there is no there, there."

At a breakfast with journalists on Thursday, the labor icon and president of the AFL-CIO spoke highly of Clinton, the former secretary of state and favorite for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, but he did raise some questions that he hopes Clinton will answer if she runs.

McConnell: 'Remember me? I am the guy that gets us out of shutdowns'

(CNN) – In his strongest words to date, Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, tried to quash talk that he would allow another government shutdown if he becomes Senate majority leader next year.

"Of course not. Remember me? I am the guy that gets us out of shutdowns," McConnell told CNN in an exclusive interview Wednesday.

"It's a failed policy," he said of shutdowns.

White House: Prospect of government shutdown won’t stop immigration action

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama won’t forestall upcoming executive actions on immigration amid Republican threats of another government shutdown, the White House said Wednesday.

Obama is currently weighing ways to make changes to the immigration system on his own after Congressional action on the issue stalled. Some GOP lawmakers have suggested holding up a bill funding federal agencies if Obama takes unilateral action as promised.

Poll suggests Romney on top in Iowa if he runs again

(CNN) - He keeps saying no to third run for the White House, but another new poll – this time in Iowa – indicates Mitt Romney would be the front runner for the Republican presidential nomination if he changes his mind.

A USA Today/Suffolk University survey of Iowa voters released Wednesday should add to the feeding frenzy over a possible 2016 presidential bid by the 2012 GOP nominee. While the former Massachusetts governor's repeatedly said he's not running again, the attention such speculation captures is a sign of the wide open nature right now of the upcoming Republican nomination race.

First-week sales of Paul Ryan's book slow

Washington (CNN) – Rep. Paul Ryan's first solo book sold 6,266 copies in its first week of publication, according to Nielsen Bookscan data provided to CNN by a publisher.

The number puts Ryan's "The Way Forward" behind two other books by conservative authors, "America" by Dinesh D’Souza and "One Nation" by Ben Carson, both of which have been out longer than "The Way Forward," according Jason Pinter, the founder and publisher of Polis Books.

Shaheen goes on the attack against Brown

(CNN) - The Democratic incumbent in a key Senate race that may very well decide which party controls the chamber next year is going up with her first attack ad against her likely Republican challenger.

The campaign of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire announced Wednesday morning that they're launching a new TV commercial that highlights what they say is former Sen. Scott Brown's record of protecting big oil companies. The spot is the eighth of Shaheen's 2014 re-election campaign, but the first to criticize Brown, the former GOP senator from neighboring Massachusetts who moved to the Granite State late last year and is considered the heavy favorite to win next month's Republican Senate primary.
