Rick Perry's lawyers call cancer research accusation a 'red herring'

(CNN) - Rick Perry’s lawyers pushed back against a central accusation by Democrats that the Texas governor’s office was being investigated about questionable funding for a cancer research project.

The accusations over the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, CPRIT, are tangential to the two felony charges against the longtime Republican governor over his veto of funding for the Public Integrity Unit. His lawyers Thursday called the cancer funding accusations a “red herring.”

First on CNN: Pro-Democratic group goes up with big buy in key Senate contest

(CNN) - The leading outside group supporting Democrats in this year's battle for control of the Senate says it's putting big bucks behind a new ad that attacks the GOP challenger in North Carolina, home to one of the most crucial races.

CNN has learned that the Senate Majority PAC will launch a new television commercial Thursday that slams North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis over state education cuts. He's the Republican Senate nominee who's challenging first term Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan. If the GOP can flip the seat in North Carolina and five others, without losing any ground, they will win control of the Senate in November's midterm elections.

A confident Rick Perry hits the road after indictment

(CNN) – Texas Gov. Rick Perry is scheduled to be in court on Friday, but he won't be there. Instead, he'll be testing the waters for a possible presidential run.

Three days after being fingerprinted and having his mug shot taken following his indictment, Perry will begin a series of visits to critical presidential nominating states – a strong indication that the Texas Republican won't let felony charges get in the way of his political ambition.

(CNN) - The stage is set in one of the most important Senate races this year's midterm elections, a contest that could decide whether the Democrats or Republicans control the chamber next year.

Mark Begich. If the GOP can flip the seat in Alaska, and five others without losing any ground, they will win control of the Senate.

Alaska primary gets underway for key Senate race

(CNN) – With Alaska's U.S. Senate seat considered one of the most vulnerable Democratic seats this fall, both Republicans and Democrats have a lot at stake in Tuesday's GOP primary.

The winner of the crowded race will square off against incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Begich in November. Republicans, who need a net win of six seats to retake control of the Senate, have focused on the contest in the traditionally red state of Alaska as a key turnover possibility

Howard Dean: I hope Hillary Clinton becomes president

Washington (CNN) – One year ago, Howard Dean, the former Democratic presidential contender and avatar of progressive sentiment, sat in a hotel lobby at the annual Netroots Nation conference in San Jose and held forth on Hillary Clinton's White House chances in 2016.

Dean made news.

Clinton "will not get a pass" in the 2016 Democratic primaries if she decides to run again, Dean said, an early warning shot from the left against the party establishment's anointed front-runner. Dean said he might make a repeat White House bid of his own, promising to agitate "other politicians" in the race on issues precious to liberals.

Stepping up political game, Hillary Clinton agrees to help in midterms

Washington (CNN) – Hillary Clinton has been able to exist slightly above politics for the last six years.

That will soon be coming to an end.

Clinton, the former secretary of state and frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, has committed to play a sizable role in fundraising for the party ahead of the 2014 elections, according to sources and aides for different campaign groups.
