Few decisions early on election night

(CNN) - While Tuesday's elections haven't gotten nearly the attention that a candidate for next year's presidential election has, voters across the country were casting ballots on races that mattered to them locally and had implications nationally.

Even as Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain was holding a nationally televised news conference to rebut sexual harassment allegations from the 1990s, a measure in Ohio to overturn the anti-collective bargaining measure that Republican Gov. John Kasich signed into law earlier this year was being interpreted as a barometer of next year's presidential election.

Gingrich: Debates helping rise in the polls

Washington (CNN) - Newt Gingrich says that his well-received performances in the Republican presidential debates are one reason why he's rising in the polls in the race for the GOP nomination.

"I entered this race with a huge amount of background story, some public, some private, which led people initially to think, 'Well, I'm not sure I want him.' And part of what the debates have done is they've been able to see me without editing, and, therefore, they've been able to say, 'Gee, that's not the guy I thought he was,' " the former House Speaker told CNN's Piers Morgan, in an interview scheduled to run Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight."

Christie to hit the trail for Romney

(CNN) – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie stumps for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney on the campaign trail for the first time Wednesday.

Christie, arguably the former Massachusetts governor's most high profile surrogate, will make two stops in New Hampshire, visiting Romney's state campaign headquarters in Manchester and attending a Romney house party in Nashua. Later in the evening, Christie will go to the campaign's national headquarters in Boston to watch Romney face-off against the other major Republican White House hopefuls in a presidential debate in Michigan.

What Election Day 2011 could tell us about 2012

Washington (CNN) - Some statewide and local elections on Tuesday could serve as a barometer for next year's battle for the White House.

While overshadowed Monday by the verdict that Dr. Conrad Murray was responsible for Michael Jackson's death as well as another shoe dropping in the controversy surrounding GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain over allegations of sexual harassment, Election Day 2011 does has some compelling storylines that serve as an appetizer for next year's contests.

Has Cain controversy hurt him in the polls?

Washington (CNN) - The first major national poll conducted since the reporting of sexual harassment allegations surrounding Herman Cain indicates that the Republican presidential candidate remains tied with former Massachusetts Gov. Pro-Cain group attacks media over controversy

Washington (CNN) - An independent group dedicated to helping Herman Cain win the GOP presidential nomination is up with a web video that defends the Republican presidential candidate against allegations of sexual harassment.

The web video, by a super political action committee called the "9-9-9 Fund," includes clips of conservative hosts, including Rush Limbaugh, blaming the mainstream media for attacking a black conservative like Cain. The video uses television clips of liberal pundits attacking Cain as well as the famous clip of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas calling his grilling during his confirmation hearings two decades ago "a high-tech lynching, and ends with the on-screen message, "Don't let the left do it again."

Democrats attack Romney over controversial abortion amendment

Washington (CNN) - National Democrats are launching a new attack against Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, blasting the former Massachusetts governor in a new web video over what they say is his support of a controversial abortion amendment.

Romney is targeted in a web video out Thursday by the Democratic National Committee which starts by describing a "personhood" amendment, which is on the ballot in Mississippi November 8. The controversial measure, if passed, would define "life" as beginning at the moment of conception and it would make illegal all abortions, including the termination of pregnancies caused by rape, incest, or which prove grave threat to the life of the mother. The amendment is opposed by some National Right to Life organizations, and the Catholic Church in Mississippi says it is too extreme.
