
Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama will seek passage of an assault weapons ban as part of a larger push for new gun control laws, an administration official said Friday.
Vice President Joe Biden left out the idea of such a ban when he laid out a series of potential proposals under consideration by his gun task force Thursday. Instead, he focused on a new universal background check system for gun buyers and restrictions on high capacity magazines.

Washington (CNN) – Wal-Mart's envoy to the White House's gun violence task force will meet with Attorney General Eric Holder, not the group's leader Vice President Joe Biden, an administration official said Thursday.
Wal-Mart is one of ten retailers meeting with Holder Thursday, the Justice Department said. Other stores expected to be represented at the 3:15 p.m. ET meeting include Dick's Sporting Goods and Bass Pro Shops.

Washington (CNN) - A staunch supporter of gun rights for years, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid may be changing his position on the contentious issue in the aftermath of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
The nation’s top Democrat in Congress has faced scrutiny in recent weeks for his close ties with the National Rifle Association. On December 30, the Washington Post reported that Reid slipped a provision into the 2010 national health care law that restricts the government from collecting data on gun ownership.

Washington (CNN) – A senior administration official offered some sharp pushback Monday on Sen. Lindsey Graham's comments about the president's choice in Chuck Hagel for Defense Secretary.
Graham made headlines Sunday when he blasted Hagel as an "in-your-face" choice during an interview on CNN's "State of the Union." The South Carolina senator labeled Hagel a "controversial" pick by President Obama and didn't rule out staging a filibuster to prevent a vote on Hagel's nomination.

Washington (CNN) – House Speaker John Boehner told members of his GOP conference Friday that he plans to use the upcoming battle over raising the federal debt ceiling as leverage for more spending cuts.

Washington (CNN) - Hillary Clinton clearly has a lot of thinking to do once her time ends at the State Department. And it appears there is no shortage of sounding boards in Washington should she decide to seek the presidency in 2016.
Democratic strategist and CNN Contributor Hilary Rosen bantered briefly with Clinton before the November election about the prospect of a second run for the White House. It was a "sign me up for that" type of chat which, Rosen cautions, did not last long.

(CNN) - Former GOP presidential running mates Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan met Thursday morning in a Washington hotel, a Republican official told CNN.
The meeting ended around 11 a.m. ET, the official said. Following the meeting, Ryan issued a statement saying he was "grateful to Governor Romney for the honor of joining his ticket this fall, and I cherish our friendship."
