Breaking: Arrest made in ricin letter case

(CNN) – An arrest has been made in connection with letters sent to President Barack Obama and Sen. Roger Wicker that authorities are testing to determine if they contain ricin, two federal law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

The person was arrested in the Tupelo, Mississippi, area, one of the officials said.

Senate confirms Obama's nominee for interior secretary

(CNN) - The Senate, by an 87-11 vote Wednesday, confirmed Sally Jewell, top executive of outdoor gear company REI, as the next secretary of the interior.

Jewell is considered an expert in energy and conservation issues and has a long history of involvement in the administration's environmental efforts. She helped create and implement the president's America's Great Outdoors program.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signs law raising requirements for abortion clinics

(CNN) - Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed a law Tuesday that drastically raises the safety requirements for abortion clinics to operate - a measure that he says "has been endorsed by pro-life groups across America."

"As a physician, and as a governor, I am proud to sign this legislation," Bentley, a Republican, said in a statement. "This bill provides appropriate standards of care."

Prominent attorney William Ginsburg dead at 70, family says

(CNN) - William Ginsburg, an attorney who represented former White House intern Monica Lewinsky, died Monday at age 70, his family confirmed to CNN.

Ginsburg died at home in Los Angeles from complications of cancer, his family said Wednesday.

The attorney was known for being one of the first people to appear on all five major Sunday news talk shows on a single day during the Lewinsky scandal in the late 1990s, after the intern admitted to sexual activities with then-President Bill Clinton.

Obama to announce $100 million for brain research

(CNN) – President Obama on Tuesday will unveil a $100 million initiative to research the human brain, in hopes of unlocking further understanding of brain disorders.

The initiative, dubbed Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies, or BRAIN, "aims to help researchers find new ways to treat, cure, and even prevent brain disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury," the White House said.

Obama hosts Easter Egg Roll, falters on the basketball court

(CNN) - With viral-video star "Kid President," American Idol's Jessica Sanchez, and the Easter Bunny at their side, the first family kicked off the 135th Easter Egg Roll at the White House Monday.

"It's great to have everyone here this morning. We are so excited," first lady Michelle Obama said from the White House balcony. "The Easter Egg Roll is the biggest event that we have here on the South Lawn of the White House each year."

Obama forms commission on long lines to vote

(CNN) – Taking steps to make good on a pledge from his State of the Union Address, President Obama signed an executive order Thursday that establishs a bipartisan panel to address long lines at polling stations and other voter irregularities.

"When any Americans – no matter where they live or what their party – are denied that right simply because they can't wait for five, six, seven hours just to cast their ballot, we are betraying our ideals," Obama said during the State of the Union. "We can fix this, and we will. The American people demand it. And so does our democracy."

Petraeus apologizes for affair, says 'it was my own doing'

(CNN) – In a rare public appearance since admitting to an extramarital affair, David Petraeus apologized Tuesday night for the scandal that led to his resignation as head of the CIA last year.

Petraeus, a retired four-star general, has stayed out of the limelight since the affair was revealed in November.
