House Republicans detail cuts

New York (CNNMoney) - House Republicans released a dramatic budget proposal on Wednesday that would result in sweeping cuts to federal agencies and government services.

The GOP would slash the Environmental Protection Agency's budget by 16%, cut $758 million from a program that provides food to low-income children and eliminate almost $1 billion in assistance for local police departments.

GOP to hit Obama hard on economy

New York (CNNMoney) – Rep. Paul Ryan, the Republican Party's resident budget wonk, is expected to take the Obama administration to task Tuesday night for its handling of the economy and budget.

Ryan, a 40-year-old Wisconsin native, will deliver the Republican response to President Obama's State of the Union address.

GOP's first spending targets: Bottled water on the line

New York (CNNMoney) - The Republicans about to take over the House have big plans to try to cut federal spending. First on the chopping block: Congressional travel, postage, staff salaries and other office expenses.

The new House Speaker, John Boehner, says he will move on Thursday to cut lawmakers' office budgets by 5%.
