CNN: Meet the 113th Congress: More diverse than ever
The newly sworn-in 113th Congress is the most diverse group of representatives in history, reflecting changing demographics and changing public attitudes. 98 women, 43 African-Americans, 31 Latinos, 12 Asian-American and Pacific Islanders, and seven gay and bisexual members are now new members of the House and Senate. Plus, there is the first Buddhist member in the Senate and Hindu member in the House of Representatives.

CNN: Big cabinet decisions loom as Obama vacations
As a new Congress takes over on Capitol Hill, all eyes are turning to what will certainly be a vastly different Obama Cabinet in the coming weeks. High-level vacancies in the administration are expected to include secretary of state, secretary of defense and treasury secretary. A permanent CIA director also must be chosen.

CNN: McConnell: Debt debate 'starts today'
Hours after Congress sent a bill for the president's signature to avoid the fiscal cliff, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is already gearing up for the next showdown. The Kentucky Republican wrote in an op-ed that President Barack Obama should be prepared to "have a fight" over government spending and the debt limit in the coming weeks, adding that the tax debate is now a thing of the past with the new legislation.

CNN: Filibuster fight put off as reform negotiations continue
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has put off for another day a potentially ugly fight over filibuster reform, a Democratic leadership aide said Wednesday. The issue was set to come to a head Thursday when Reid was considering forcing a major change of Senate rules – over the objections of Republicans – that would have made it harder for GOP senators to filibuster beginning debate on measures they oppose or want to amend.

CNN: House staves off fiscal cliff, but more money squabbles lie ahead
After exhaustive negotiations that strained the country's patience, the House has approved a Senate bill to thwart a dreaded fiscal cliff. The 257-167 vote Tuesday night largely fell along partisan lines: 172 Democrats voted yes and 16 Democrats voted no; 85 Republicans voted yes and 151 Republicans voted no. House Speaker John Boehner was among the Republicans voting for the measure.

CNN: House scraps vote on Hurricane Sandy aid before wrapping session
In a move that surprised many lawmakers and angered others, House Republican leaders wrapped up this session of Congress Tuesday night without voting on a package that would have provided billions of dollars in aid to victims of Superstorm Sandy. The Senate passed the $60.4 billion measure last week, and senators from New York had called on the House to take it up promptly. But because the House failed to act and a new Congress will be sworn in Thursday, the entire legislative process will have to start over - delaying the package from disbursing money to affected states.

CNN: Senate passes package to avert fiscal cliff; House votes next
A full two hours after a midnight deadline, the Senate overwhelmingly passed a last-minute deal to avert the feared fiscal cliff on an 89-8 vote. The Senate package would put off budget cuts for two months and preserve Bush-era income tax cuts for individuals earning less than $400,000 or couples earning less than $450,000.

CNN Security Clearance: Report blames poor security, inadequate response in Benghazi attack
Terrorists in Benghazi, Libya, "essentially walked right into the Benghazi compound unimpeded and set it ablaze," a special Senate report on the September 11 attack that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans says. The bipartisan report, "Flashing Red: A Special Report on the Terrorist Attack at Benghazi," released Monday by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, cites "extremely poor security in a threat environment that was 'flashing red.' "

CNN: Obama, congressional leaders to discuss impending fiscal cliff
President Barack Obama and congressional leaders will discuss the looming fiscal cliff impasse Friday at the White House, aiming for a last-minute deal to stave off automatic tax increases and spending cuts. The 3 p.m. meeting will come days before the deadline to reach a deal, and after another day of Republicans and Democrats blaming each other for the stalemate.

CNN: Rep. Markey to seek Kerry's Senate seat
Rep. Ed Markey of Massachusetts said Thursday he will seek the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. John Kerry, who was nominated to become the next secretary of state last week. Markey's announcement makes him the first to publicly announce will seek the seat.

CNNMoney: Geithner: U.S. to hit debt ceiling on Monday
Government borrowing will hit the debt ceiling on Monday, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said in a letter to Congress Wednesday. As a result, the Treasury Department will soon start using what it calls "extraordinary measures" to prevent government borrowing from exceeding the legal limit.

CNN: Source: Reid looking for votes on fiscal cliff package
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, in conjunction with the White House, is working to see if the scaled back fiscal cliff package President Barack Obama laid out last week can get through Congress before December 31st. Reid has made clear in private conversations he does not want to bring any bill to the Senate floor unless he is sure it will pass both the Democratic-led Senate and the Republican-held House.

CNN: Fiscal cliff bill could come down to wire
Though the U.S. Senate is slated to reconvene Thursday, Democrats in the chamber are considering delaying the roll out of their bill to avert the year-end fiscal cliff within just a couple days of the new year, according to a Senate Democratic leadership aide. The move is part of an effort to gain some Republican backing for a bill, but also to run out the clock and increase pressure on House Speaker John Boehner to take up the bill and House Republicans to support it.
