Republicans pledge to back Boehner, reversing earlier outrage

Washington (CNN) - Certain Republican lawmakers said Wednesday they'll now vote for John Boehner's re-election as House Speaker, despite earlier offering uncertainty over whether they'd cast their vote for the top Republican.

Rep. Michael Grimm, the freshman Republican who represents Staten Island, said he would "absolutely" vote for Boehner, hours after saying he would likely abstain when the House votes for the position on Thursday.

Pelosi, House Democrats push for quick action on gun laws

Washington (CNN) – Joining a chorus of voices wanting tougher gun laws, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi took her own step towards reform Wednesday by announcing a new task force on preventing gun violence.

"Here in Congress, what we need now are not more words. What we need is action," Pelosi said, announcing Rep. Mike Thompson, a wounded Vietnam veteran and "avid hunter" from California, as the leader of the group.

Boehner appoints woman to chair a committee

(CNN) – House Speaker John Boehner named Rep. Candice Miller of Michigan as the chairman of the House Administration Committee on Friday, three days after the Republican conference took heat for electing only males as committee heads.

"From ensuring the House runs efficiently and smoothly, to making Congress more open and accessible, Candice has a big job ahead as chairman of the House Administration Committee," Boehner said in the statement.
