House budget vote illuminates GOP split

Washington (CNN) – Ever present but rarely so public, the rift between conservative and moderate Republicans over policy and tactics was on full display Thursday ahead of a House vote on the compromise federal budget worked out with Democrats.

House Speaker John Boehner escalated his criticism of conservative groups opposed to the budget deal, saying they lost credibility by rejecting the plan before it was announced and blaming them for pushing GOP legislators into the politically disastrous government shutdown in October.

GOP disarray jeopardizes fiscal cliff deal

Washington (CNN) - Republican disarray over taxes forced House Speaker John Boehner to drop his alternative proposal to a fiscal cliff deal, leaving the negotiations in limbo Friday - 11 days before automatic tax increases on everyone.

Boehner said at a news conference Friday morning that his Republican colleagues refused to back his plan because of what he called unfounded fears of being blamed for a tax increase.

House set to vote on Boehner's Plan B

Washington (CNN) – A scheduled showdown vote Thursday evening in the U.S. House will determine how Congress and the White House proceed on fiscal cliff negotiations.

Hours before the vote, both sides insisted that they were open to further talks but also resorted to heated political rhetoric as time for a deal continued to disappear.
