'Super committee' steps up negotiations, Boehner pushes for deal

Washington (CNN) - As Democrats and Republicans on the "super committee" exchanged competing plans to slash the deficit, House Speaker John Boehner said he's opposed to the automatic spending cuts that would go into effect if the panel can't reach a compromise and is committed to getting a deal done by the deadline.

"I think it's important for the 'super committee' to meet its goal," Boehner said Thursday, making it clear any form of the so-called "trigger" to cut government spending is not acceptable.

As part of that lobbying effort, House GOP leaders agreed to add a last minute sweetener for conservatives who have been pushing for a balanced budget amendment to ensure future spending cuts actually happen.

House majority leader says time for Democrats to force Weiner to resign

Washington (CNN) - House Majority Leader Eric Cantor reiterated his call for Rep. Anthony Weiner to resign and suggested it's now up to Democratic leaders to force the New York Democrat to step down from his House seat.

"I think he should resign. I think his leaders should do everything they can to bring him to that point if he's not already," Cantor said at his weekly session with reporters Monday.
