Boehner announces goal of balancing budget in 10 years

Washington (CNN) – House Speaker John Boehner announced Tuesday that he supports a plan to balance the federal budget in 10 years, a goal that could require massive cuts to spending or major reforms to entitlement programs.

Boehner made the announcement to members of his Republican conference in a closed-door meeting before describing his plan to reporters.

House passes $50 billion-plus Sandy aid package

Washington (CNN) - Lawmakers in the House of Representatives approved measures Tuesday to send more than $50 billion in aid to the Northeastern states ravaged by Superstorm Sandy last fall, though some conservatives in the House were pushing for spending cuts that would offset the cost of the recovery package.

The final bill passed 241-180, with 49 Republicans voting for the measure. The package now heads to the Senate.

Akin, returning to Capitol, says he's 'totally in' Missouri race

Washington (CNN) – U.S. Rep. Todd Akin returned to Capitol Hill Monday for the first time since his comments about "legitimate rape" caused widespread condemnation from fellow Republicans, some of whom called on Akin to drop his bid for Missouri's U.S. Senate seat.

Trailed by reporters asking him about his plans for the Senate race as he walked out of the House chamber Monday, Akin said "I'm in, totally in."
