Arkansas lawmakers back nation's most restrictive abortion bill

(CNN) - Overriding a veto by Arkansas' Democratic governor, the state's Republican-controlled House and Senate approved a bill to ban abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy - the most restrictive such law in the country.

Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat, vetoed the bill Monday, saying it "blatantly contradicts the United States Constitution, as interpreted by the Supreme Court."

Senate passes package to avert fiscal cliff; House votes next

(CNN) - A full two hours after a midnight deadline, the Senate overwhelmingly passed a last-minute deal Tuesday to avert the feared fiscal cliff on a 89-8 vote.

The Senate package would put off budget cuts for two months and preserve Bush-era income tax cuts for individuals earning less than $400,000 or couples earning less than $450,000.

A tie for Obama and Romney in nation's first results

(CNN) - The first presidential election results are in – and it's a tie.

President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, each received five votes in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.

The $35,800-a-person event for about 70 people was hosted under a tent in the yard of Cheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook.

Washington (CNN) - Republicans will have the Constitution read on the House floor Thursday morning in a nod to the conservative Tea Party freshmen that helped put them back in the majority.

The reading will start at 10:30 a.m., with members taking turns until they complete the document - a process that could take up to a couple of hours.

(CNN) - Nancy Pelosi, who made history as the first female Speaker of the House, ends her tenure this week as a new Republican majority prepares to take power Wednesday.

Led by incoming speaker John Boehner, the GOP has pledged to roll back many of the reforms implemented by the Obama administration and Democrats, including health care reform, which were outlined in the Republican "Pledge to America."

Alaska's write-in ballot count to begin Wednesday despite challenge

(CNN) - Alaska election officials will begin counting write-in ballots Wednesday despite a federal court challenge by the campaign of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller, state director Gail Fenumiai said.

The complaint filed in federal court Tuesday afternoon asks Fenumiai's office to "adhere" to state law in the counting of write-in ballots, limiting what the suit called "subjective" voter intent rules that were issued this week.
