McCain on rise of ISIS: 'We predicted this'

Sen. John McCain slammed President Barack Obama on Monday over his comments that U.S. intelligence underestimated ISIS.

McCain countered Obama's assertions made on CBS' "60 Minutes," saying that ISIS' expansion in Syria and Iraq was tied to the President's decision not to leave a residual U.S. military force in Iraq and his refusal to arm moderate Syrian rebels last year despite urgings from his national security advisers.

"We predicted this and watched it," McCain said on CNN's "New Day." "It was like watching a train wreck and warning every step of the way that this was happening."

Civil rights icon, congressman commemorates Voting Rights Act

Months after leading the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, civil rights leader John Lewis stood by President Lyndon B. Johnson and watched the Voting Rights Act become law.

Forty-nine years later, Lewis, now a congressman from Georgia, commemorated the landmark legislation by taking to a relatively new forum for social movements - Twitter.

Six weeks later, McDaniel challenges Mississippi runoff result

Washington (CNN) – Chris McDaniel on Monday officially contested results showing he lost a Republican primary to Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran, revealing what his camp alleges is evidence of voter fraud and other irregularities.

"They asked us to put up or shut up. Here we are. Here we are with the evidence," McDaniel said at a news conference in Jackson.

Obama, GOP lawmakers place blame on Putin

Washington (CNN) - Top American officials harshly criticized Russia on Friday for its continued support of pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine following the downing of a Malaysia Airlines jetliner.

President Barack Obama said Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has the "most control" over the situation in eastern Ukraine as intelligence indicates that rebels most likely shot down Flight 17 from an area they control with a surface-to-air missile.

Winning strategy likely to stay in Mississippi

Washington (CNN) – An unlikely group helped Sen. Thad Cochran capture the Republican nomination in a hotly contested primary runoff, but the strategy that propelled him to victory is unlikely to make it into the GOP playbook.

In the final weeks of the election, Cochran's campaign and allies turned to African-Americans and Democrats to carry the incumbent senator past his tea party challenger.
