(CNN) - The U.S. State Department helped Sen. John McCain with his trip into war-torn Syria this week, the senator from Arizona said Wednesday.
McCain acknowledged on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" that the State Department and rebel groups were both involved in providing his security.
Washington (CNN) - The U.S. Senate approved John Brennan as the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency Thursday after a Republican senator ended his delay of the vote earlier in the day.
Brennan was confirmed by a 63-34 vote that crossed party lines. His elevation to the post was widely expected, though he faced vocal opposition from critics like Sen. Rand Paul, who filibustered the vote and demanded more answers from President Barack Obama's administration on when they might use unmanned drones to target Americans suspected of being terrorists.
Washington (CNN) – John Brennan, nominated last month by President Barack Obama to become the next CIA director, came one step closer Tuesday to assuming that role after being approved by the Senate Intelligence Committee.
But the former top counterterrorism adviser still faces a battle in the full Senate, where some Republicans have vowed to stall his nomination until they receive answers about the country's drone program and the September attack on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya.
West Allis, Wisconsin (CNN) – In a speech billed as the "closing argument" of Mitt Romney's year-and-a-half long presidential campaign, the GOP nominee Friday presented the case that four years of President Barack Obama had produced few of the economic results that were promised at the beginning of his term.
"The closing hours of a campaign have a dynamic of their own," Romney said in a speech outside Milwaukee, describing how some people were just beginning to tune into the presidential race as the contest comes to a close.
(CNN) – Mitt Romney detailed with fresh specificity this week how he would pay for large tax cuts he's proposed for all Americans, though his campaign says the suggestions were merely options and not a firm look into what policies he would seek to enact as president.
In the interview with CNN affiliate KDVR on Monday, Romney began by offering the broad strokes of his tax plan that he's been touting for months: lowering rates for all Americans and limiting deductions for higher income tax payers.

Charlotte, North Carolina(CNN) – In a rare display of just how quickly a tightly scripted national political convention can unwind, Democrats on Wednesday struggled to complete a voice vote amending their party platform to include language referring to Jerusalem and God.
It took three attempts from Democratic National Convention Chairman Antonio Villaraigosa before the platform was amended, and a loud chorus of delegates yelling "no" met each attempt to pass the changes by voice vote.
