(CNN) – Iowa Congressman Steve King surveyed the comings and goings of the 2012 GOP field Sunday following the Minnesota split: Rep. Michele Bachmann's Saturday win at the straw poll in Ames and news of former Minnesota Gov. Tim Palwenty's departure from the presidential race.
"You can never say never in this business," King said.
(CNN) – Fresh off a win at the Iowa straw poll, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann stood by her principles Sunday, saying in an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” that she won’t compromise her values on “big issues.”
Facing criticism that tea party members resisted compromise to reach an agreement on the debt ceiling, the Republican presidential candidate was asked to identify legislation that represented a compromise between herself and lawmakers of an opposing or alternate view. “I stand on a core set of principles but you want to continue to move in a positive direction,” Bachmann told Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley. “I’ve done that throughout my legislative career.”
(CNN) – Despite being the “greatest nation in the world,” businessman Herman Cain declared that America has become a “nation of crisis” during a speech at the Iowa straw poll Saturday.
“I don’t have to tell you about the problems this nation faces,” he said, “So I’m going to spend the next few minutes talking about how we solve this mess.”
(CNN)-The Democratic National Committee turned Mitt Romney’s words against himself in Des Moines Saturday, with an ad targeting the former Massachusetts governor’s stance on deficit reduction.
Pouncing on the 2012 presidential candidate’s comment that “corporations are people,” the DNC ad groups Romney with the tea party movement when it comes to methods of battling the deficit.
(CNN) – Call it Mike Huckabee's summer tour. The former governor of Arkansas and bass player Mike Huckabee will join businessman and gospel singer Herman Cain on stage at the Iowa straw poll in Ames to "share their musical talents with straw poll attendees," one of many gigs the part-time musician plans to play at the early 2012 presidential contest.
"I am honored to have the Governor join me on stage for this historic event," Cain said in a statement. The duo will perform together at the Friends of Herman Cain tent during festivities leading up to the matchup that tests candidate strength and organization in the first-in-the-nation caucus state.
(CNN)-Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin took to her Facebook page Monday to warn Americans about President Barack Obama’s plan to improve the nation’s economy.
“Be wary of the efforts President Obama makes to ‘fix’ the debt problem,” she said. “The more he tries to ‘fix’ things, the worse they get.”
(CNN) – No one has emerged spotless from the debt-ceiling debate, according to a survey conducted in the aftermath of the agreement to raise the nation's debt ceiling.
A CBS News/New York Times poll released Thursday revealed that eight in 10 Americans say they disapprove of how Congress is handling its job – the highest number in the poll's history since 1977.
Washington (CNN) – It's not likely to be found on any Washington-area menus soon. Congressional Black Caucus chair Emanuel Cleaver blasted the final debt deal brokered between congressional leadership and President Obama on Twitter as a "Satan sandwich" Monday.
"This deal is a sugar-coated Satan sandwich," he said. "If you lift the bun, you will not like what you see."
