NEW YORK (CNN) – She said she believed Sen. Barack Obama "may have anti-American views." But her views didn't cost Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann her seat in Minnesota's District 6.

She's beat Democratic challenger Elwyn "El" Tinklenberg.

Bachmann made national headlines after she said during a cable television interview that she believed Obama might have anti-American views. Bachmann suggested the news media investigate members of Congress for possibly having the same.

Those comments caused a storm of controversy and gave her once little-known rival fodder for his criticisms of Bachmann and for his fundraising appeals.

NEW YORK (CNN) - "The Hammer" is surely smiling.

Former Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's old House seat is back in Republican hands.

In Texas' District 22, Democratic Rep. Nicholas Lampson has lost to Republican Pete Olson, a Navy veteran.

Lampson won the seat in 2006 after DeLay resigned under a cloud of scandal. He was known as "The Hammer" for being able to enforce party discipline when it came to getting House Republicans to vote. DeLay held the seat for two decades.

NEW YORK (CNN) - Republicans in Pennsylvania hoped to snatch two seats in the House of Representatives from Democrats on Tuesday. Not only did they fail, but the GOP wound up losing one of its own.

In District 3, Rep. Phil English lost his re-election bid to Democrat Kathy Dahlkemper.

Sixteen-term Democrat John Murtha staved off a challenge from Republican challenger William Russell in District 12, even after Murtha called his own constituents "racist" and "redneck." And Republicans eyed the District 11 seat held by Democratic Rep. Paul Kanjorski - and put up Republican Lou Barletta against him - but fell short.

NEW YORK (CNN) - Democrats are poised for big wins in Virginia.

With Sen. Barack Obama projected to win the state's 13 electoral votes - the first Democrat to do so since 1964 - the party also claimed the state's open Senate seat and flipped at least one Republican-held seat in the House of Representatives.

Former Democratic Gov. Mark Warner won the Senate seat being vacated by veteran Republican John Warner, and Democrat Gerald Connolly beat Republican Keith Fimian to win a House seat from the state's 11th congressional district. That northern Virginia district supported President Bush in 2004.
Meanwhile, Democrats hope to add to their wins by defeating GOP Rep. Thelma Drake in District 2, another district that backed Bush four years ago. But currently the race, between Drake and Democratic challenger Glenn Nye, is too close to call.

Democrats also hope to snatch victory from Republican Congressman Virgil Goode Jr. in District 5. Goode and Democratic challenger Tom Periello were running neck-and-neck early Wednesday.
Goode caused a controversy last year when he wrote that "many more Muslims" would be elected to Congress unless the U.S. enforces tighter control on immigration. He made the remarks after Keith Ellison of Minnesota, the first Muslim elected to Congress, decided to use the Quran for his swearing-in.

NEW YORK (CNN) - The New York House seat in District 13 was the last Republican seat in New York City. It will switch into the Democratic column.

Democrat Mike McMahon, a lawyer and City Council member for the past eight years, has defeated Republican Robert Straniere.

The race is to replace Republican Congressman Vito Fossella. In May, he was pulled over in Alexandria, Virginia, and accused of drunken driving. Fossella later admitted having an affair and fathering a child out of wedlock.

Amid the scandal, Fossella decided against seeking re-election.

McMahon had been endorsed by Republican-turned-independent New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

NEW YORK (CNN) - Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha has won re-election to his District 12 seat. He beat Republican challenger William Russell.

Murtha, serving his 16th term, recently fired up controversy after saying this about some of his own constituents: "There's no question western Pennsylvania is a racist area."

Murtha made those comments in an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The video of that interview was posted on the internet. Murtha apologized for his words the next day.
But days later in an interview with a local television station, Murtha said his district, years ago, was "really redneck."

Former President Clinton recently campaigned on Murtha's behalf.
Murtha is an ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's and a vocal critic of the Bush administration's handling of the Iraq war.

He's well known for steering federal dollars to his state for projects and staunchly defends that.

In District 8, Republican Congressman Ric Keller has lost his re-election bid to Democrat Alan Grayson.

In District 24, Republican Congressman Tom Feeney was defeated by Democrat Suzanne Kosmas.

But in Florida District 16, the shift went the other way. Democratic Congressman Tim Mahoney lost to Republican challenger Tom Rooney.

NEW YORK (CNN) – A Democratic lawmaker who won his seat after his predecessor became mired in scandal lost his bid for re-election after becoming embroiled in scandal himself.

Rep. Tim Mahoney of Florida's 16th district was defeated by Republican Tom Rooney, a lawyer and former Army officer.

Mahoney recently admitted having two extramarital affairs and paying one woman to keep quiet. He won his seat in 2006 partly by stressing family values after Republican Rep. Mark Foley resigned in disgrace. Foley had sent racy Internet messages to male former Capitol Hill pages.

NEW YORK (CNN) - In what appears to be a stunning defeat, CNN projects that Florida Rep. Tom Feeney has lost his re-election bid. The three-term Republican was defeated by Democrat Suzanne Kosmas.

Though not himself charged with any wrongdoing, Feeney was linked to disgraced and imprisoned former lobbyist Jack Abramoff. During the campaign, Feeney ran a TV ad apologizing to voters for going on an Abramoff-sponsored golf trip to Scotland in 2003.

NEW YORK (CNN) - Despite the prospect of heavy losses in the House, Minority Leader John Boehner is expected to run for his post again. That's according to several Republican congressional sources. Boehner is the top Republican leader in the House.

Meanwhile, as election returns come in, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she feels "excellent," adding that House Democrats will "increase our numbers." Pelosi said Democrats will break the historical pattern of a party losing seats after winning a wave election. The last time a majority party won seats after a wave election was in 1932.
