JUST IN … Former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton will join President Barack Obama on the trip to South Africa to attend a memorial for Nelson Mandela.

BILL CLINTON REMEMBERS NELSON MANDELA IN AN INTERVIEW WITH WOLF BLITZER:… “One of the most enduring conversations I had with him … He said, 'I realized they could take every single thing away from me except my mind and my heart. Those things I would have to give them. And I decided not to give them away.'" And he looked at me and smiled and he said, ‘neither should you.’ I'll never forget it as long as I live."

Clinton said the two worked together throughout the South African leader's presidency, which ended in 1999. He later noted that he would visit South Africa every year around Mandela's birthday and has been to the country around "nine or 10 times" since leaving office.

JIMMY CARTER’S MEMORIES OF MANDELA IN AN INTERVIEW WITH JAKE TAPPER …"He's been almost absolutely undeviating in his ability to forgive people who hurt him personally, and hurt the people that he loved. And that was the Nelson Mandela I knew," said Carter.

Carter's grandson Jason had served in the Peace Corps in South Africa and spoke Zulu. So Carter brought Jason to Mandela's home, and found himself sidelined at the visit. "They spent that whole half an hour talking to each other in Zulu, and pretty well ignored me, the former president of the United States," said Carter, with a laugh.

BREAKING: NELSON MANDELA DIES The revered statesman who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of its dark days of apartheid, has died. He was 95.

Mandela battled health issues in recent years, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations. In a nation healing from the scars of apartheid, Mandela became the moral compass.

His defiance of white-minority rule and his incarceration for fighting against segregation focused the world's attention on South Africa's apartheid system, making him a symbol of the struggle for racial equality. In his lifetime, he was a man of complexities. He went from being considered a terrorist, to an imprisoned freedom fighter, to a unifying figure, to an elder statesman respected worldwide.

SOUTH AFRICAN PRESIDENT JACOB ZUMA: “Our nation has lost his greatest son. Our people have lost a father. Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss. His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world. His humility, his compassion and his humanity earned him their love. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mandela family. To them we owe a debt of gratitude. They have sacrificed much and endured much so that our people could be free.”

JUST IN: NO CLEAR MOTIVE BEHIND SANDY HOOK SHOOTING:  The evidence clearly shows that the shooter planned his actions, including the taking of his own life, but there is no clear indication why he did so, or why he targeted Sandy Hook Elementary School, Connecticut officials wrote in a report released Monday afternoon on the second-deadliest shooting in U.S. history.

Lanza had "an obsession" with mass murder and "a strong interest in firearms," the report states. On his computer, investigators found a spreadsheet detailing mass murders over the years; two videos depicting gunshot suicides; two pictures of Lanza pointing guns at his own head; and movies and a video game depicting school shootings.
