Clinton family takes on Sopranos in announcing campaign song

Watch the Clintons parody the Sopranos' final scene.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - It's not everyday the Clintons would want to be compared to the Sopranos.

But in a gimmick intended to drum up buzz for her campaign's new theme song, Democratic White House hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton, and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, star in a new video that parodies the HBO mob show's famously (or infamously) ambiguous final episode. (Watch video: CNN Internet Correspondent Abbi Tatton reports on the new Web video)

In the Web video, Bill and Hillary Clinton are seated in a busy diner as Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” plays in the background. The couple flips through the diner jukebox, looking over the nominees for the campaign song. The actor Vincent Curatola, who played Johnny "Sack" Sacramoni in the HBO series, makes a cameo appearance, walking by the table and suspiciously eyeing Hillary. Like Meadow Soprano in the final episode, Chelsea Clinton – not seen – is supposedly outside the diner parallel parking.

As Hillary decides on a song, Bill muses: “My money’s on Smashmouth.”

The video also pokes fun at Bill Clinton’s long-publicized struggle with weight. Hillary orders a basket of carrot sticks for the table, to which Bill responds, “No onion rings?”

The anticipation builds to when Hillary is about to announce the song contest winner, then the video abruptly cuts to black.

The video then instructs viewers to go to another page on the New York Democrat's Web site to learn what song was chosen – Celine Dion's “You and I”

The campaign says over 200,000 people voted in the contest since it launched in mid-May, and 25,000 wrote in their own suggestions.

Clinton will likely be the first and only candidate to share a theme song with Air Canada, which once used the upbeat tune in a television ad campaign.

The announcement is accompanied by a big red “Contribute” button on Hillary’s web site, urging supporters to donate “before the upcoming FEC deadline.”

Pretty patriotic, that Hillary. Nothing says America like a Canadian singer.

Hilary supporters must be proud. Instead of talking about where she stands on important issues, she uses a Sapranos re-make. Nice.

This was incredibly creative and clever and shows that the Clintons and their team are aware of what goes in the world around them and how it impacts people.

And for all the idiots out there...HILLARY did not choose the theme song! If you learn to READ you would see that 250,000 Americans voted in a song contest and THEY chose the song. THEY chose a Canadian singer and a Canadian song in an online ELECTION.

Now its true that for the last 7 years elections in America under George Bush haven't meant anything. But that's finally changing.

I don't know what's worse – them putting together that crappy "production" or knowing that I am going to have to listen to Celine Dion for the next year or so

Bill & Hillary are both very bright individuals. We had it pretty good under the Clinton administration. I feel that the average American has lost their country under Bush. The thought of the Clintons being back in the White House is very appealing to me!

Once again, the Clinton family shows that it can "walk with kings and keep the common touch." It appears that many people commenting on the video and the song choice didn't like the eight years of peace and prosperity that Bill and Hillary Clinton helped create during the last Democratic presidency. I suppose anti-Clinton Republicans prefer the wholesale carnage, White House-sponsored torture and influence peddling of the Bush/Cheney cabal, a craven coven of lickspittles for the plutocrats and polluters.

    Best, Bill, Falls Church, Va.

I'm sorry, but that is a terrible song. Nothing says 'America!' better then a song by a French Canadian!

How about a song from an American artist Hillary? The Clintons belong with Dion in Canada...

Not only does that song suck, it takes sucking to a whole new level. She lost my vote with that song . . .

Aw, lighten up, people! I'm not a Hillary-fan, but the video was a riot. And those of you getting your nose out of joint because of the choice of a Celine Dion song ... COME ON ... it's a SONG, folks. It's a campaign song, not a nomination for a new national anthem.

It amazes me that some of you are even capable of finding cnn's website! Newsflash: the American people picked the song! 2nd Newsflash: Celine Dion isn't in Canada, she's in Vegas, making money for American companies! 3rd Newsflash: If you were as critical of the Iraq war as you are of something as insignificant as Hillary's campaign song, maybe we'd never be in this mess to begin with!

    Who cares is right.
I lived in NY for 8 years and let me tell you Hillary did NOTHING for Western NY. Absolutely NOTHING and I have no respect for her. The only thing she did for NY was give more to NYC (nothing against NYC what so ever).
The saying is true, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
She never helped any of the struggling communities after 9-11, after Enron, after anything. She just made sure the people she knew she could get votes from were treated like royalty. (NYC)

"another one bites the dust" might be more suitable for her campaing!

If people did their research they will find out Hillary is NOT the best candidate for president.
We already had one intern(al) affair, do we need more??

First of all, I absolutely love Celine Dion, but I wouldn't have chosen that song. "You and I" has NOTHING to do with Clinton's political campaign ... It's a love song! It is far more fitting with an Air Canada campaign as it at least talks about flying ... Not the best choice. What angered me the most was that Hillary used it for her campaign ... I wish a better candidate used one of Celine Dion's songs.

Also, from the other comments that I've read: Celine Dion does own numerous homes in the United States, works promarily in the United States, and works for American charities. If we can vote an Austrian to be governor of California I don't think that choosing a Canadian-born singer for a campaign song is so bad.

That was a very clever ad. I do hope Hilary wins. I'm sick of the chaos the current administration created. No matter what is said about the Clintons' personal lives, the Clinton administration had much better diplomatic relations with the rest of the world than the current administration could hope for.

This is a reply to "It would be nice if Hillary chose an American musician," posted by Jim earlier today.

Well, Jim, if you actually read the story that you were commenting on, you would know that Senator Clinton did not choose the artist. The song/artist was the winner of a Campaign Song Contest on Senator Clinton's website ... 200,000 people voted.

The reason we have Mr. Bush leading our country to unimaginable disgrace is because too many people can't assess a candidate before voting just like Jim can't assess an article before commenting on it.

It's a good video. Great idea. But I agree with the others–Celine Dion? And a French Canadian,no less. Plus the song is just plain lame, to put it bluntly. Fitting, though. Celine Dion learned English so she could sing in English to reach a wider audience–that is, the lucrative American market. Purely for selfish reasons. Just like Hillary. Amorphous and doing whatever it takes to further her own selfish goals. The Hillary we see now is not the Hillary we were first introduced to. And frighteningly, as fickle as we are as a country, together with our short memories and attention spans, she just may be our next President.

A more appropriate celine dion song for Hilary is "Where does my Heart Beat Now?"

I love to see the comments of people who say, "oh, she lost my vote because of that video, song, etc." Get a life and a sense of humor people. Haven't we learned anything in the last eight years? Lighten up. Geez!
