Bush calls immigration measures a "good start"

President Bush pushed for immigration-reform in his weekly radio address

(CNN) - President Bush pushed again Saturday for immigration-reform legislation and the "enforcement tools" it includes.

The bill in the Senate would provide $4.4 billion in immediate funding for security measures such as more fencing, infrared cameras and other security technology as well as an advanced employee-verification system.

"These enforcement measures are a good start," said the president. "Yet even with all these steps, we cannot fully secure the border unless we take pressure off the border."

In a move he assures is "not amnesty," immigrants currently living here illegally would incur penalties before being allowed to reapply for a green card. In addition, the application process for employment would be stricter for those who engage in activities like gang violence and crossing the border illegally.

Bush acknowledged that the American people may have concerns about immigration, but said if the Senate supports his provisions for immigration reform, the bill would " build an immigration system worthy of our great nation."

Take preassure off of the border?!?!? You expext to do that by making 12 million illegals legal?!!? You ARE nuts!! You're going to create a MASSIVE strain on the border. Millions will try to get in on the "deal"!!!!

This is madness. I feel like I'm living in a fiction novel where the government has totally taken ownership of the country and burned the Constitution.

What's next? Storm troopers will come take me away for posting this "dissent"? Political "retraining" at some camp in the dessert? Maybe you'll impliment a one-child policy?

No one is drinking the koolaide. I voted for this traitorous moron twice. Mostly because their were no real options. All he has done is assure Hillary will be the next president and that the republicans will be a footnote in history. I am no longer a republican as they have completely abandoned me on EVERY issue I hold dear. This kind of voter anger takes decades to play out. 97% are against this.. the other 3 are likely illegal. The great question to ask yourself you republican geniuses is.. " What good does it do to save moeny by repealing the 14th amendment of Hillary is going to tax us four times that to pay for health care?" I for one.. will not stop her.. Here it comes boys.. TAX TAX TAX... and since I will no longer have a job.. it's on you.. I'm gonna apply for welfare.. LOL Good luck.. MORONS... your mom would not vote for you.

The good news; Bush has only 19 months left in office, the bad news he has 19 months left to further weaken our nation. We must have a border that we can secure and enforce, after that we can address immigration reform. The illegal aliens (immigrants are those that join our great nation legally) no matter how you look at them have broken our laws and need to be returned to their country of origin. Yes you can return 12 – 20 million people, you start one at a time and you cut off foreign aid to the countries that encourage and allow them to cross. You punish those who employ them regularly, swiftly and severely and the need for the “cheap labor goes away”.

Yes this is a crock! We can fight a war half way around the world, but we can't secure our borders. We can enforce a no fly zone to protect the Kurds but we can't build a fence along our southern border because it is too big. Somehow we kicked Sadam's army out of Kuwait, but there are too many illegals to deport. Yes, what a crock!

Why do we so desperately want to punish undocumented workers and their children?
Presidents and Governors have the pardon power to remedy vast injustices and travesties. We offer criminals deals all the time. Prosecutors have traditionally offered leniency to some defendants in order to get them to testify against other defendants. Leniency can be immunity from prosecution or reduced charges and recommendations for reduced sentences. Offering leniency is a long-standing and important aspect of the legal system. Law enforcement would be paralyzed without it.
Clemency, leniency, pardoning is not a departure from our justice system. A pardon is not a private act of grace. It is a part of the Constitutional scheme. When granted it is the determination of the ultimate authority that the public welfare will be better served by inflicting less than what the judgment fixed.
For four years now, a new view of undocumented workers has been forming in the hearts and minds of Americans thanks to Lou Dobbs. This emerging picture is that illegal immigrants have brought gangs, drugs, graffiti and murders to cities, draining police and fire resources and taking services away from legal residents.
Lou Dobbs, Mayor Lou Barletta and Rep. Tom Tancredo believe that undocumented workers and their children deserve no legal rights. They entered the country illegally therefore they have no human rights and deserve no amnesty, leniency, or pardoning.

Bush should get out of office immediately before he does more damage. What does he know about immigration? He can't read, or think independently.

This immigration bill is nothing but a sham. Amnesty and cheap labor for Corporate America. They broke the law, they need to pay the consequence for it – deportation. They can't be bothered to learn the language, are a drain on our social system and everyone bends over backwards for them. If they want all that this country has to offer, then do it legally like my ancestors did. The border needs to be secured NOW not next year, not 5 years from now, and not whenever Congress decides to do so. IT NEEDS TO BE DONE NOW!!!!! Wages are being driven down because of this "cheap" labor force and contrary to political belief, there are AMERICANS that will do the job!!! As a matter of fact, we have a whole lot of them in Washington starting with President Bush and working our way down that we could put to work for Molly Maids. They are more than qualified considering the amount of BS they have handed the American People. If they can dish it out, they are more than qualified to clean it up!!!

I am afraid Mr. Bush can no longer expect anyone to trust him on this issue, or any other for that matter. If he's for it I'm against it- there is a suspicious smell to it.

Yes, that's right, Rolando De la Rosa. If you enter illegally, don't expect "legal rights." Legal immigrants subject themselves to the laws of this land. They are subjected to background checks and health screenings as they go through the legal process. So, welcome to them. As for illegals, who screens them? Illegals, go home! You are not welcome here until or unless you are willing to come here legally. Work to fix the problems in your own country and stop visiting your problems on us!

Last time I checked this was the KENNEDY/McCain bill that Bush is trying to shove down out throats.

All of you liberals out there (who I agree with by the way) can someone say something negative about Kennedy?

He is after all the moron that shoved that anchor baby fiasco through in the 60's, the one where an ILLEGAL spits out a baby and that baby becomes a freakin' citizen because it was born on our soil????????

This bill has Kennedy's name on it, where is he speaking out in support of it? This phony, bleeding heart will surely be there when it is signed off on though.

I am a conservative and I do find it healthy that many of us from both sides disagree with this trash bill, we are not acting as two parties, we are acting as AMERICANS.

    I dare someone hammer Kennedy.

Sweatshops in Latin America = mass migration in the U.S.

Pay a decent wage in Latin America and this will end undocumented workers

Nike is one of the largest, most popular, and most profitable shoe and clothing companies in the world. But the reality for many workers overseas making Nike shoes and clothing is far less rosy. Workers are paid wages insufficient to meet their basic needs, are not allowed to organize independent unions, and often face health and safety hazards.
