Edwardses celebrate their anniversary at Wendy's

John and Elizabeth Edwards celebrate their 30th anniversary at Wendy's.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - John and Elizabeth Edwards took a break from their hectic campaign schedules on Monday to celebrate their annual tradition - eating their anniversary dinner at Wendy's.

The tradition started on their first anniversary, when the Edwards were in the middle of moving and too busy for a formal dinner. They decided to continue it and have eaten there every year since.

The couple celebrated their 30th anniversary at a Wendy's in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

How transparent; I'm not buying it. What's next?
    Giuliani in a wife-beater
    Clinton getting a tattoo
    Obama on a Harley...

Good grief! Some of the poor spelling, writing, grammar and punctuation here on this blog are truly FRIGHTENING!! Proud to be an American?!? Judging by the [poor] quality of the writing here on this blog, it's more like ASHAMED to be an American!! The poor writing exhibited here further validates the DUMBING DOWN OF AMERICA...shame. And to think we all get a FREE education, and still can't read or write beyond a 3rd grade level!! Wow! 🙁

Just use your bean for a moment. Why is this item even considered as news? It's because John Edwards lives in a world far, far away from "this America"! If not, it wouldn't register as any big deal.

The event was staged to evoke just the comments we see here: "ah, how cute! – can you believe that such elite people as the Edwardses can lower themselves (once a year) all the way to the Wendys level?" The answer is: only if there are cameras present and votes to be had.

Heck, Clinton ate at McD's all the time, and it wasn't because he was simply trolling for votes.

This guy reminds me of a used-car salesman. It seems to me that many of the things he says he stands for are contrived to garner support. Frankly, I think that he is very pompous and will do or say anything to get a vote. I have never felt that he has my best interest in mind. Our country needs to be so careful when we elect our next president; there is serious business at hand that will have a lasting effect on us all.

    1. All politician's are rich. Not sure why everyone thinks that John Edwards can't be an advocate for the poor by being rich. Do you have to be black to be a advocate for racial equality?

    2. The media knows that the Edwardes celebrate at Wendy's. That's why there is a picture.

    3. Being married for over 30 years is an accomplishment to be proud of. John McCain, Rudy, and Thompson can't claim that.

It never says that they don't eat in fancy restaurants....it says it is a tradition that they observe. Whose business is it if they later go to a restaurant that charges a million dollars a plate....it's their money.

I like how the complainers in this thread can turn something so sweet into another reason to be hateful.

Even under the worst case scenario the haters are painting, that in 1978 the Edwardses coldly calculated how it might reflect on them politically in 2007 if they were to eat at Wendy's for their anniversary every year, it would show admirable foresight, something that's sorely lacking in the current administration.

I wouldn't count on Bush to plan a successful trip to the restroom.

I think this is all a ploy by his spin doctors to combat the bad publicity of his $400 haircut. Are we sure they've done this every year?

This guy is the biggest phony in the world. He made his money as a lawyer in injury cases on the pain and suffering of others. Ask him how many times he ate at Wendy's in a year.

Wendys. High fat, high grease, high persavtives, etc.,etc. Wonder how this fits in with her health needs and his idea of better healthcare? Does hedgefund own stock in Wendys? Just asking

What a bunch of losers some of these posters are who can think of nothing else to say other than another boring and irrelevant jab at his freakin' haircut! Like others have already mentioned, they did this for the first time 30 years ago when they were first starting out. There's no hypocrisy here.

Oh calm down, I don't think they would want to make a publicity stunt out of their 30th anniversary.

who cares about how much money they have. just mind your business and stop trying to tear people apart.

We should all be so lucky to be with someone for 30 years.

I am getting married this Sunday, and I am obsessed with Wendy's food. Although I tend to vote Republican, this sounds like a tradition my future bride and I should adopt!

Let me see if I got this correct. John Edwards, the son of a middle class factory worker who went to public school just like 90% of the rest of the middle class families, has the audacity to become a successful over achiever with a shot that office of President?

Hmmm...and I thought it was the American dream that anyone, even the son of a factory worker, could aspire in this great nation to become successful. I'm sure John Edwards' father, if he were still alive, would be very proud of the man.

I'm sure all you jealous whiners who are making fun of John as being an elitist hope that your own childrn grow up to be ditch diggers. Don't tell them to grow up to be successful because then they'd be just like John Edwards and heaven knows we can't have that.

Oh that so cute, oh that is so romantic, oh that is so polictical. Who other than a politician would have notified the press to be there. You idiots really don't get it do you. It doesn't matter if he is a Rep or Dem, it is just a political stunt that works great on women and others with femmine atributes. You know who I mean.

I am happy for John and Elizabeth and their 3 kids, and Wade's memory and their respective parents. Anyone who "sees" something sinister about this tradition is looking in a mirror. This family's wealth, and what they do with it has NOTHING to do with the presidency. What matters here is that after 30 years, WHEN he is elected president, no time will be wasted on personal situations like adultry and perjury. They will make a wonderful First Family!
