Tancredo defends threat to bomb Muslim holy sites

Tancredo defended his comments on Sunday

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo continued to defend his comments that threatening to bomb Muslim holy sites would be the right way to "deter any kind of aggression" from terrorists and said that anyone who wouldn't do the same "isn't fit to be president" on Sunday morning.

"I'm telling you right now that anybody that would suggest that we should take anything like this off the table in order to deter that kind of event in the United States isn't fit to be president of the United States," the GOP presidential candidate said.

During a campaign stop in Iowa on Tuesday, Tancredo said that “an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina.” Tom Casey, a deputy spokesman for the State Department, told CNN that Tancredo's comments were "reprehensible" and "absolutely crazy." But Tancredo said that when the State Department complains about things he says, he feels more confident.

"Yes, the State Department. Boy, when they start complaining about things I say, I feel a lot better about the things I say, I'll tell you right now," Tancredo said, to laughter from the audience.

    Hey Joe in NJ,

It's funny you should bring up the Geneva conventions. What Tancredo is suggestion is a DIRECT violation of Part II of the Fourth Geneva convention, ratified by the United States in 1955. Last time I checked Al Qaeda was not a signitory of the Geneva Conventions.

Why should our enemies wage war under OUR terms, when people like you dont want to live up to our own commitments as set forth under international law?

Last time I checked Tancredo ~ this administration (ESP> our State Department) are more supported by the American people.

What are you going to do this time?
Send a bucket of carrots to Condi? Give me a break. Tancredo was a one hit-half-wonder.... Immigration.

    Tom Tancredo is right.

Muslim fanatics shall know that the USA will nuke Mecca if they attack just once more our country. And Great-Britain should clearly exclaim the same.

As for "Muslims are good people", we shall not forget that Muslims have killed more than 6 million innocent people since 1970 (2 million Hindus in India, 2 million Black Christians and animists in South Soudan in the 80's and 90's, 1 million gassed and slaughtered by Saddam Hussein's regime, and thousand of Copts in Egypt, of Black Christians in Nigeria, of Asian Christians in Malaysia and Thailand and Philippines and so on).

It's about time non-Muslims start to defend themselves, as moderate Muslims have never done anything to fight extremist Muslims.

Of course this level of threat might scare some radical muslims away from a hit on more US interests BUT if we did strike against their holy sites you can bet your bottom dollar that the number of radical muslims would increase 1 billion fold. Bad idea.

I like the way he thinks. Muslims would not hesitate to bomb anyone else's holy site, indeed would not consider them holy. I like this guy.

This is madness. So if some radical Catholics act up, should we go bomb the The Vatican?

While Tancredo's solution may be subject to criticism, the fact that it has been posited by a presidential candidate I believe indicates tha there is an audience for that type of response. The negative comments here do not address the problem which is addressed by TANCREDO'S proposal which is the perceived lack of opposition by the Muslim community to the actions of the islamic terrorists who commit atrocities in th ename of ISLAM.It is sheer folly to believe that that the US would not respond massively to any type of nuclear or biological attack in this country especially to the extent such an attack were celebrated in Muslim countries as publicized by Al Jazeera.Does anyone seriously believe that such an attack would not be celebrated by a sizable portion of Pakistanis?
People are getting fed up witht he lack of aggressive action being taken.Amwerican troops are being killed in Afghanistan by TALIBAN who cross back into Pakistan when being pursued and Musharraf does nothing or is unable to do anything.A nation is not sovereign if it cedes the right to commit war to a particular area of its country that it cant control.Would we tolerate invasions from tijuana becuase the MEXICAN GOVERNMENT cant control that area? Is there a diifernce between an afghan government controlled by the Taliban that allowed Bin Llden to conduct 9/11 and a Pakistani government that cant prevent Bin Lladen from attempting another 9/11? The answer is a resounding "no".Anyone out there who believes that any politician in this country that did not respond to a terrorist attack conceived from Pakistan is whistling Dixie.I think oBAMA scored a lot of points with what he said and frankly he should call on to the carpet all of those who have accused him of being naive for what he said.Ask Clinto nad Mccain what they would do if attacked from elements in Pakistan that the government there chooses not to confront.Musharraf is no different that the Saudis who funded the terrorists as long as their attacks were not in Saudi Arabia.it was only when they attacked inside Saudi Arabia that they have taken any action at all;and when the become concerned about stopping them, they will strikew a simialr deal to MUSHARRAF....Confine your attacks tot outside Saudi Arabia and we will turn a blind eye to oyur activities. In such a circumstance should the preotector of the holy sites of Islam get a free pass?In such a circumstance they should be told in no uncertain terms that the price of their terrorist tolerance will be the destruction of IISLAM'S religious sites and it should be publicly announced to the Muslim world exactly what the consequences will be of Saudi passivity.

That Tancredo would say what he did in the first place shows a complete lack of good sense.

For him to stand by his comments shows total self-righteousness.

I can't believe that there are even a few people who are supporting this idea. How many innocent people would die in such a strike? How do you think the terrorists would respond to this?

Hey Tom – Look into "Game Theory". You obviously don't understand the motivations of the terrorists. Bombing Mecca would be the nicest gift you could ever give them.

On the other hand, you just gave them this crazy statement. Expect to see it on all their propaganda videos soon.

Congratulations, you just increased their recruitment by 50%!

I think this is a great idea. To answer the poor ignorant gent who equates bombing a holy site in Mecca to bombing the Vatican should a Catholic bomb us, the comparison is sadly ignorant and completely invalid.

Here is the difference. The Pope, and two melina of Christianity have never supported terrorism. However, an Islamic leader will calim to be against terrorism in public while financing it in secret. Since Mohamad, a Muslim has been considered faithful if he does whatever he can to kill infidels (i.e. nonmuslims) including suicide missions of mass murder and terrorism. This is actually taught in the Quran.

Therefore, to deter just aggression, the battle should be taken to the source. If they bomb New York we should bomb Mecca. That will stop terrorism in its tracks. In fact, it will not stop until then.

I don't think Tom has very much gas left in his Tank or his Credo with buffoonery such as this.

Thanks Tom for showing the rest of America why you should never be given the Presidency under any circumstances.

I suppose when you know you've got a turd's chance in hell of surviving even the first official primaries of Next Year! that you might as well sound as pompous and idiotic as you can. After all, it is your 15 minutes of fame or in the case infamy.

I hate to say it but, LOL. Hal, please turn off Sean Hannity et al and take a trip to the fine NY Public Library, or if you're too lazy, start with a Wikipedia search on the topics of the Crusades, Pope Urban II, La Reconquista, and The Inquisition.

as a muslim american i am very reasured by comments by most of people on this topic but their are still absurd coments by people like Hal from Brooklyn which shows that their are narrow minded peope out their who we need to educate. The comments by Tancredo is very disturbing and shows that people seem to forget that there 1.5 billion muslims most of them not in the M.East and that mecca and medina belongs to muslims and not saudi arabia or any other govt.

Right now you are dealing with a few terrorists. If this was to happen, you would be dealing with 1.5 billion + very angry muslims. Tom Tancredo is crazy and doesn't even stand a chance to win so I wouldn't worry about this ever happening.

Muslim extremists have been bombing holy sites for years, and it hasn't stopped anything.

Why do you think they would pack up and quit if we NUKED Mecca?

I have to say I respect Tancredo for at least mentioning this. It may not be a perfect solution but it is one that the Islamic world will take note of and it hopefully it will spur them to realize American means business. All this terrorism is designed to scare people from insulting Islam. At least he has the guts to speak what we all want to hear.

That would be the dooms day for the world. This would guarantee the real unity of ALL Muslims against the west, the normal and the not so normal ones. Tom needs to have a good sleep and some medication to stop hallucinations and anxiety. He should withdraw from his candidacy as he does not seems to be in his mind

To Rob C – we are all quite impressed with your Internet research. You've discovered Wikopedia – I'm quite proud of you. Let me ask you this – do you want to see American women and children blown up here in the States? That's a yes or no question. Do you think we can prevent that playing by the old rules? You found all that info on the Internet but seem to lack the brains to process it. Rules are great when agreed upon by all parties. Radical muslims have no rules and they don't care if they die. If we play by these rules they will win. It's that simple. It just baffles me people like you don't understand that. It's like you're living in another world. What you also fail to understand is a few thousand civilian deaths now may prevent tens of thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands later down the road. You really don't get this???
