Romney: My wife is 'prettier' than Bill Clinton

Mitt and Ann Romney

AMES, Iowa (CNN) - Commenting Saturday on a new Time Magazine cover story titled "The Real Running Mates" - which focuses on the current crop of presidential candidates' spouses - Republican candidate Mitt Romney said his wife would make a "prettier first lady" than former president Bill Clinton.

"It has a picture of five of the possible first ladies," the former Massachusetts governor said. "In the upper left hand corner it has my wife, and then next to it, it has Bill Clinton. And she is a much prettier first lady than Bill Clinton, I can tell you that!"

The cover story features a photograph of a commemorative White House china plate. On it are the faces of five potential 'first spouses' - Bill Clinton, Ann Romney, Elizabeth Edwards, Judith Nathan and Michelle Obama.

Romney made the comments at his tent at the University of Iowa/Iowa State football game. When asked which team he would be supporting, Romney chose to stay neutral, but after a few more people asked the same question, he saw an opportunity to take another subtle jab at the Clinton family, this time toward Hillary.

"I know there's only one thing that would bring both of these Teams ... together, and that's to make sure that Hillary Clinton is not the next president of the United States," he said.

Jeez Mitt, what the heck is this?? My wife is prettier than ....

There are serious issues to be addressed and Romney comes up with this!!! FLASH FOR MITT'S CHIEF OF STAFF – most of us don't vote for a candidate on the basis of how good looking their spouse is or isn't!

Supposedly Mitt's smarter and richer than the others, so be better start acting it fer cryin out loud.

PS-I bet Senator Larry Craig (R-IDAHO)might disagree with Mitt on this issue.

I laughed so hard I got sick. Is this what the republicans reduced to. My wife make a pretier first lady.

MAN typing this is so hard cant stop laughing.

Repubilcans have no ground to stand on with issues with america. So let get elected by presenting a case my wife is pretier as first lady.

Yes, but Bill bakes far better chocolate chip cookies, and stuffs a great Thanksgiving turkey, which is absolutely necessary for a first lady, or in Bill's case... first gentleman. Compete with that Romney!!!!

Have to go with General Wesley Clark in endorsing Hillary Clinton as the best candidate for president. Certainly unequivocally more qualified than Milt Romney. I mean, come on now...his wife is prettier than Bill Clinton? What in the heck is this guy rambling about, anyway?

Mitt, I think you would better to see psychologist. You are # third person who has mental problem. #1 is Elizabeth, #2 is Michelle and you are the next. there's no comparison between you and The Clintons. You should know America doesn't need you as our leader, so your wife will never make first lady.
If she is so pretty, why don't you let her compete for Mrs. America?

Thing is, Mitt himself is even prettier than his wife. That golden skin, that set and chiseled jaw... Hollywood!

But then he opens his mouth and it all goes to Hades.

CNN, are you now competing with The National Enquirer? I'm not Mitt Romney's fan, but he was clearly just kidding and you base your headline on such nonsense? Its either that or Hillary (as if you'd report so dilligently about other candidates...)

FOX is full of right wing nuts like Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter and CNN News is shoving Clintons down our throats ad nauseum or feeding us with fluff like this. Thank God for Lou Dobbs and Jon Stewart.

I love it when something like this comes up and people start making comments like, "why are they talking about this when there are so many other important issues out there!"

Look, the candidates are talking about much more than what CNN reports on. Its not like Romney has been going around talking about how pretty his wife is all day since the last ticker item about him. Obviously he's talking about other things as well.

And really, I'm not a Romney supporter but how can you criticize him for this? He was just cracking a joke. He's obviously not using this as a major selling point for his presidency. Lighten up.

You're right on Bill and Alan. Heaven forbid a candidate not play the wooden, charm-of-drying-paint strategy that worked so well for Al Gore a few years back. "Yes Mitt, you're in a tent talking to tailgaters at the Iowa football pre-game...but darnit...stick to talk of the war, taxes and the economy. Issues, issues, issues. Don't let on that you have a...(gasp)...personality when a reporter baits you into commenting on the cover of "Time". For sure avoid ANY talk of football. Football isn't an issue. Issues, issues, issues.

    You people are pathetic.

I guess beauty really is the eye of the beholder – with the money Romney is worth, perhaps he should invest in some plastic surgery for his wife if he wants to be putting her into beauty contests...

Not that the "prettiness" of a President's spouse has anything to do with who should be elected, but Mitt does have a valid point...
