Romney: My wife is 'prettier' than Bill Clinton

Mitt and Ann Romney

AMES, Iowa (CNN) - Commenting Saturday on a new Time Magazine cover story titled "The Real Running Mates" - which focuses on the current crop of presidential candidates' spouses - Republican candidate Mitt Romney said his wife would make a "prettier first lady" than former president Bill Clinton.

"It has a picture of five of the possible first ladies," the former Massachusetts governor said. "In the upper left hand corner it has my wife, and then next to it, it has Bill Clinton. And she is a much prettier first lady than Bill Clinton, I can tell you that!"

The cover story features a photograph of a commemorative White House china plate. On it are the faces of five potential 'first spouses' - Bill Clinton, Ann Romney, Elizabeth Edwards, Judith Nathan and Michelle Obama.

Romney made the comments at his tent at the University of Iowa/Iowa State football game. When asked which team he would be supporting, Romney chose to stay neutral, but after a few more people asked the same question, he saw an opportunity to take another subtle jab at the Clinton family, this time toward Hillary.

"I know there's only one thing that would bring both of these Teams ... together, and that's to make sure that Hillary Clinton is not the next president of the United States," he said.

Actually, Bill is a lot better looking, plus he is intelligent, witty, and charming, attributes which neither of the Romneys have.

Love is blind, indeed. I think it can generally be agreed upon that Mr. Romney is certainly prettier than his wife. That said, can we please get back to a meaningful political dialogue in this country, as one is desperately needed at the moment.

Come on guys. EVERY politician throws humor into their speeches. It is a basic public speaking tactic. I personally found his statement to be slightly funny and obviously ridiculous, as it was intended to be. I didn't laugh, but I did smirk a bit.

I am registered for neither party, and in fact I have no desire to see Romney go on to become President, but I can assure you his platform is not going to be "my wife would make a prettier first lady than Bill Clinton".

Is it just me or is this election more about the wives than the actual candidates? I mean you have Edward's wife pretty much doing everything for him, you have Bill out there since Hillary is simply hated by most of the country, Obama's wife is getting into the act too. If it becomes a contest of wives then the winner is Fred Thompson's wife...I mean damn!

Vote Fred Thompson 2008 and 2012!!!

isnt it both sad, and a real statement about the american culture,...that there ARE actually voters who know nothing more about candidates...
    than looks...

romney can spin as much political poetry as he likes..in the end...he quietly understands that his money is about all he has to offer; the GOP is ALL about soundbites and a desperate attempt to avoid substance.
    Republicans = BLAH, BLAH,BLAH

    Get RID of them!

It was a freakin' joke people. I have seen Mitt in person and he is constantly cracking jokes. He is extremely personable and has a great sense of humor. Something the democrats might try to develop. Not everything he says has to be some sort of serious political commentary. Give me a break.

Romney seems to be intent on picking up the baton left by Tommy Thompson – as the guy who keeps saying one stupid thing after another!

Mitt made a good humored comment. It was tasteful in that he didn't put any other wives down. Ann Romney is one of the most graceful ladies ever. I am shocked by all the gnarling and gnashing of teeth. Oh well.

Who cares what the first lady looks like? Eleanor Roosevelt wasn't exactly the epitome of ideal beauty but what a remarkable First Lady , if not the most impressive. I think this is ridiculous that this is even an issue worth reporting about.

That's a horrible comment by Romney, and though he said it jokingly, it really shows his attitude toward gender equality in America. His joking masks his refusal to accept a woman as President Of The United States. From experience I know that people who think this way are usually biased against minorities also, regardless of gender. Because I am a black american male, I am now more inclined to support Hillary Clinton after this comment.

Ummmm. I would not say she is prettier than Clinton at all.

While both are not ugly by any means I think they are both rather average.

Perhaps he was thinking about the prostitute.
