Mitt and Ann Romney
AMES, Iowa (CNN) - Commenting Saturday on a new Time Magazine cover story titled "The Real Running Mates" - which focuses on the current crop of presidential candidates' spouses - Republican candidate Mitt Romney said his wife would make a "prettier first lady" than former president Bill Clinton.
"It has a picture of five of the possible first ladies," the former Massachusetts governor said. "In the upper left hand corner it has my wife, and then next to it, it has Bill Clinton. And she is a much prettier first lady than Bill Clinton, I can tell you that!"
The cover story features a photograph of a commemorative White House china plate. On it are the faces of five potential 'first spouses' - Bill Clinton, Ann Romney, Elizabeth Edwards, Judith Nathan and Michelle Obama.
Romney made the comments at his tent at the University of Iowa/Iowa State football game. When asked which team he would be supporting, Romney chose to stay neutral, but after a few more people asked the same question, he saw an opportunity to take another subtle jab at the Clinton family, this time toward Hillary.
"I know there's only one thing that would bring both of these Teams ... together, and that's to make sure that Hillary Clinton is not the next president of the United States," he said.

It. Was. A. Joke.
Because, you see, Bill Clinton can't be a prettier wife because, well, he isn't a woman and men don't really meet that all important wife requirement. Do you see now? Bill Clinton is actually a man, o.k.? Got it?
Romney most certainly did not say, "Vote for me because I have a pretty wife." Please – read the story.
The MittWitt is scary. Ever seen the movie, "Sleeping With The Enemy" with Julia Roberts? Mitt reminds me of hte husband. He'll say or do ANYTHING to get elected. And whoever said earlier that his wife looks like a Stepford Wife - you're right on. lol
After reading the comment by Maria in Houston, I came to realize the only unbiased (and entertaining) coverage has come from the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. Kind of sickening if you ask me.
C'mon people... he was at a football game, and made a comment about a magazine cover. "Yea, that's a great cover of all our spouses, but I can't help but be reminded of that whole Iraq mess right now...". Jeez, people... It was a joke at a football game. Do ALL you men watch a ball game with the same seriousness your expecting him to?
You people are horrible. He was just making a casual comment.
Well well well. What a typical Romney-esque answer he gave there: "Hey America! I have no originality or leadership skills or wisdom, but I'm rich and pretty! Vote for me, guys!1!"
Someone needs to tell Mitt that this is the presidency, not the contest for prom king and queen. I'm looking for a President, not Ken and Barbie.
YMBFKM, Mitt.
WAIT JUST A MINUTE HERE, MITT IS A MORMAN ISEN'T HE? I WONDER WHICH ONE OF HIS WIVES HE MEANS.
Hillary does need to lose a little in the caboose.....another fat Dem President?
i definitely would not call this a casual comment... clearly he was trying to take a jab at her but what's striking is how irrelevant his comments were. football teams competing with each other, coming together to make certain hillary clinton doesn't become the president... yes, they'd all hold hands, call the game off and vote! (bill clinton won iowa in both '92 and '96) perhaps he's assuming that the teams are composed mainly of conservatives or even more likely he had one too many drinks at the tailgate..
Prettier in HIS opinion. I think Bill Clinton is way prettier than Mrs. Romney!
My only question for Mitt Romney is:
Is your wife a Mormon too? Then like you she won't have to worry about being first lady.American will not vote for a Mormon for president.
Don't worry, the same people won't vote for Obama either.
Mitt is prettier than his own wife or anyone else running.
That's easily his biggest asset.
Otherwise he has absolutely nothing. He has no principles, just stuff to say in a campaign depending on whether he is running in Massachusetts or in the republican primary with neandreathals as voters as well as those that wish the south had won the civil war. He'll say anything to please them. Belief is another matter.
At least Huckabee, Brownbeck, Duncan Hunter believe in their drivel. Guiliani, Mitt Romney, Thompson and unfortunately McCain this time are just phony pretenders without principle.
To which wife does he refer?
Mitt Romeny is phonier than a $3 bill. He accomplished nothing as Governor and wasn't even loyal to his Lt Governor when she ran for Governor. His healthcare insurance reform was predicted to cost $200/month (his estimate) Estimates came in higher than that and were forced down resulting in high coinsurance/deductables. Major insurers have already announced 8% premium hikes for next year. Don't have to worry about who is prettier because he won't make the White House.
I understand that Mitt was making a joke, but I find very interesting how in the last few days the 3 Republican front runners have made it a point to insert Hillary in their speeches. From Thompson saying that he was the only one who could defeat Hillary, to Rudy's rabid rantings and silly ads and now Mitt's jokes. What's the matter big guys, you're so desperate to pander to your base that you feel the need to inject Hillary in every stump speech? The more you attack her, the more presidential she looks.
Besides, Bill is looking darn hot lately. It would be a riot to see how he would fulfill his role as "First Laddie".
Ronnie & Hawk of Texas: PLEASE LEAVE THE MORMON CHURCH OUT OF IT! We are all sick of such stupid and insulting comments. So what if Mitt loves his wife and thinks she's pretty. Sheesh!
"That's a horrible comment by Romney, and though he said it jokingly, it really shows his attitude toward gender equality in America. His joking masks his refusal to accept a woman as President Of The United States. From experience I know that people who think this way are usually biased against minorities also, regardless of gender. Because I am a black american male, I am now more inclined to support Hillary Clinton after this comment."
...exactly. I'd never vote for him.
Yes, we all know he said this trying to be cute & joke around. But he should have thought before inserting foot in mouth. If this is any indicator as to how well he thinks on his feet, then he should be embarrassed at such a stupid comment.
Liberals sure don't have a sense of humor – but they never have. Actually, Bill is rather feminine looking. When I lived in Arkansas, a lot of people wondered just who he was interested in. Perhaps all his sexually abusive treatment of women is really a bit of a coverup.
That's your wife Romney? I don't know if she's pretty or not, but I can tell you that none of your interns are going to want to sleep with her!
Keep on joking, since that may be what you do best, but whatever that is, it's sure not running this country.
Like I'd even think of voting for your dumb ass.
Come on guys! I'm a liberal myself but you have to really really try to find something to criticize here. He thinks his wife is pretty. Good for him. He has a sense of humor. Doubly good for him because that's painfully rare these days.
I swear some of the liberals on here are no better than Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh, you're just naive partisan hacks who can twist anything a republican does into something shallow, corrupt, or stupid.
Republicans are just people with different political philosophies and most of them beleive those philosophies because they honestly think that's what's best for the country. If you can't beleive that then you're just as brainwashed as the rabid bush supporters and abortion clinic bombers.
When guy's are commenting that Slick is more atractive than Ann Romney you simply have to wonder what has happened to society...but this is actually quite funny since Hillary is the real dog of the bunch. Ron Paul in 08'
Actually I'm kinda thinking Mitt may be Gay as his wife looks more like a man then Bill
I can't believe that many of you took Mitt's joke that serious! Either you haven't followed Romney enough or you're plain ignorant. Stop believing everything you read and see. Laughter is still the best medicine.
