Mitt and Ann Romney
AMES, Iowa (CNN) - Commenting Saturday on a new Time Magazine cover story titled "The Real Running Mates" - which focuses on the current crop of presidential candidates' spouses - Republican candidate Mitt Romney said his wife would make a "prettier first lady" than former president Bill Clinton.
"It has a picture of five of the possible first ladies," the former Massachusetts governor said. "In the upper left hand corner it has my wife, and then next to it, it has Bill Clinton. And she is a much prettier first lady than Bill Clinton, I can tell you that!"
The cover story features a photograph of a commemorative White House china plate. On it are the faces of five potential 'first spouses' - Bill Clinton, Ann Romney, Elizabeth Edwards, Judith Nathan and Michelle Obama.
Romney made the comments at his tent at the University of Iowa/Iowa State football game. When asked which team he would be supporting, Romney chose to stay neutral, but after a few more people asked the same question, he saw an opportunity to take another subtle jab at the Clinton family, this time toward Hillary.
"I know there's only one thing that would bring both of these Teams ... together, and that's to make sure that Hillary Clinton is not the next president of the United States," he said.

What’s wrong with a man thinking that His wife is pretty and having a sense of humor? Romney was cracking a joke while complimenting his wife.
Yes but can you explain the stain on her blue dress?

THANK YOU!!! The mud-slinging between the two sides is getting sickening! They both try to make something out of nothing. Though I don't like Romney, he was just trying to joke around and have a little fun. What's happened to this country, many liberals and conservatives have sticks shoved so far up their you-know-whats, they will jump all over anything said by the other side and try to put some spin on it. I'm getting sick of both sides, what happened to us just being AMERICANS!!
p.s. Romney's wife is not that bad looking, rather average, but that's just my opinion.
Mitt is a chauvinistic jerk.
In my opinion, Mitt Romney's "first lady" comments reflect an attitude that is archaic at best, and just totally stupid at worst. Some day it will happen – there will be a female president – deal with it, Mr. Romney! And do it with a heap more grace and style than you have exhibited thus far!Clear the cobwebs out of your mind and focus on the future . . .!!!
Unenlightened to even the simplest idea that women & First Ladies are to be judged for their contributions not how well they sit quiet and look pretty. Romney has shown us the true state of his intellectual development.
This could backfire on Romney et al. If Hillary successfully targets Democratic and Republican (and undecided) women in the US, ie. 50% of the eligible voting population, and does so in the same 'put a woman in charge' way that Margaret Thatcher did, she would win by a landslide.
She's not all that much prettier.
"make sure that Hillary Clinton is not the next president of the United States"
Amen!

The only thing sillier than this beauty contest is the fact that it gets any press. The corperate media wants to make sure you aren't paying attention to the death and destruction of the Iraqi debaucle.
Which of his wives is he talking about??
OK lighten up people it was a joke, not even a newsworthy one. Actually it made me laugh – his wife is a friggin' dog! Gross!
Freudian slip by Romney. He should be more careful about his perverted sexuality.Bill was sexually abusive? What does that make Rudy then?A serial rapist?Faux news here again.
i don't think so. she is pretty ugly
Actually, she's not.
Try again, Mitt.
I am not American. I cannot vote. I have been persistently advocating for more "participation" of the spouses in the campaign.
But I never expected or meant this. What I meant was a greater visibility and aid by the spouses because they do matter. By no means I wanted to play the beauty card. Yes, I wanted a more visible profile; but only to give the voters the possibility of assessing the smarts, not the beauty.
So, Romney thinks that his wife is prettier than Bill Clinton. Well I don't think that either one of their wives are actually pretty. Romney, is trying too hard to look like Mr. Perfect. He looks like Barbie's Ken doll with dark hair. Who want's a doll (an empty headed plaything) for president?
Well here we go again. Republicans have a tought time thinking outside the box, or should I say beltway? Bill Clinton will be the best looking first "First Gentleman". I wouldn't expect Mitt to understand that concept though. Before you start on how he is no gentleman because he lied about an afair, be sure to remember your man from Utah. How about your man and the e-mails sent to young pages? I always hear how evil Hillary is, but never hear why. Anything she has done is nothing in comparison to our leadership over the Bush years.
Yes ... maybe he was "just making a joke" but it shows how shallow his sense of humor is. We've been stuck for 8 years with a "guy you could have a beer with." American needs someone with intelligence!
Mitt also said that his sons are serving their country by working to get him elected (tell that to those who have children really serving their country in Iraq) and that the dog liked being tied to the top of a car in a cage ... and that he (Mitt – not the dog) was a life-long hunter. Ha Ha Ha –
I don't know, from your picture of Mrs. Romney, I think Bill is better-looking, in his old Silver Fox phase.
But the more serious answer: this has to qualify as the stupidest quote from the campaign trail this year.
Frudy McRombee is just a tool in the republican cog, and Mitt proves that. Ron Paul, Joe Biden, and (first name?) Gravel are the only viable candidates and none are electable. 🙁
Mitt Romney's statement doesn't surprise me in the least.
To date, I haven't seen or heard a Republican that has impressed me with any signs of intelligence or political savy, including the President.
Republican priorities seem to be money, oil, and the Iraq War. Their failures on all three pretty much sum up their lack of intelligence.
The US Economy, is at an all time low, the oil prices are at an all time high and their success in Iraq after six years is nil.
So, inane statements by Republicans shouldn't be surprising. They're likely just another result of the President's Actionable Intelligence Strategy.
As far as bringing two teams together, the Democrats wouldn't associate themselves with the Republicans. They value their reputation. To be seen with fools would not be a wise Campaign Strategy.
I'm not surprised that Romney offered this assessment of his wife's superior looks...since HIS physical appearance is the only thing keeping him alive in the race, why shouldn't his spouse be expected to offer a similar appeal?
How pathetic can these candiates get? Who cares who's the prettiest first lady/man?
Hey, here's an idea. Try discussing the issues, rather than trying to turn this into a beaty contest!
