Romney: My wife is 'prettier' than Bill Clinton

Mitt and Ann Romney

AMES, Iowa (CNN) - Commenting Saturday on a new Time Magazine cover story titled "The Real Running Mates" - which focuses on the current crop of presidential candidates' spouses - Republican candidate Mitt Romney said his wife would make a "prettier first lady" than former president Bill Clinton.

"It has a picture of five of the possible first ladies," the former Massachusetts governor said. "In the upper left hand corner it has my wife, and then next to it, it has Bill Clinton. And she is a much prettier first lady than Bill Clinton, I can tell you that!"

The cover story features a photograph of a commemorative White House china plate. On it are the faces of five potential 'first spouses' - Bill Clinton, Ann Romney, Elizabeth Edwards, Judith Nathan and Michelle Obama.

Romney made the comments at his tent at the University of Iowa/Iowa State football game. When asked which team he would be supporting, Romney chose to stay neutral, but after a few more people asked the same question, he saw an opportunity to take another subtle jab at the Clinton family, this time toward Hillary.

"I know there's only one thing that would bring both of these Teams ... together, and that's to make sure that Hillary Clinton is not the next president of the United States," he said.

He is right!!! Bill looks like my toddler's poop with all the little chunks in it. I'm amazed she still is with a man that cheats on her. Mrs. Clinton you've got serious issues, or you’re just desperate.

First of all, he's wrong. Secondly, this speaks to the role of women when viewed by Republicans. Just wear the pearls, read to children, and redecorate a room in the White House. Third, this is a serious time or serious people. Mitt Romney is a flip-flopping joke.

I can't believe what kind of idiots post here. I guess I'm one, too, just for responding, but let this sink in... IT WAS A JOKE. But, you've already made your minds up, so keep the "I can't believe he thinks we'll vote for who's prettier" comments going.

Joke, no joke, whatever. Bill is way prettier. I also don't think the guy should have set his wife up for all this flak like he did. What a great guy. If he'll put his wife out there as a target for all this ridicule, what's he gonna do for us?

Jeez. Mitt really knows how to stick to the important issues.

    What a winner.

THIS IS THE MITT AND MORMON TACTIC, SUMMARILY DISMISS THE REAL ISSUE AND SAY OR DO ANYTHING TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT. MITT AND FRAU ET KIDS ARE ALL EXTREMELY SELF SERVING. "My son's are not serving in the military because they are helping me get elected to be president, and thats more important." D'oh! MITT, TO WHOM??? THE TRUTH WILL EVENTUALLY SURFACE. DON'T WORRY!

I am sorry this dialog has gotten to rude and abrassive. I expect this was a humourous casual comment, meant to be funny. Everyone wants a 'real' president but, when a preseidential condendor does things that a regular American would do, the opposing party pounces.

Was he on a podium in a formal setting? I really doubt it. Is the press biased, going after anything for a headline? You be the judge... -MBR

Have we really sunk this low on the ticker? We can't talk about Ron Paul and the real issues but we can talk about this? I know Time Magazine is part of CNN's parent company, but come on! Stop relying on the media for your political info. Google Ron Paul so you don't have to read this dribble.

You pathetic liberal losers, not one of you had the guts to opine on the last blog where Hillary's main man Hsu was being discussed and you all were called out and nothing......

But Romney says a joke and you are all over it, like it is a story.

I really like you bigoted ones that remark on his religion, even if you think you are so smart and progressive, guess what, your still a bigot.

Unlike Edwards who has made an issue of his wifes cancer, are any of you aware that Mrs Romney has MS, but they don't shove that down your throat like Mrs and Mrs Edwards do, I happen to have met Ann on a few occasions and she is a sweetheart of a human being.

Lastly to you Clintonista's, you wish your phoney couple had half the marriage that these two have, it's real and not some made up charade done just for political expedience.

Judging by this picture, not by very much she wouldn't be "prettier" than Bill Clinton, but the comment certainly shows that Mitt is stuck in 1952. Americans enjoy a pretty first lady, but they've never insisted on one. And if Romney doesn't know, Americans do, that Eleanor Roosevelt was a better first lady than Grace Coolidge, and that even Barbara Bush was probably a better first lady than Lucy Hayes. It's not my place, as a man, to speak for women, but I know women who would roll their eyes over this nonsense.

I beg to differ! Mrs. Romney looks like she went to the same gender-switch doctor that Ann Coulter used!

Let's face it, this is a window to what's really going on in Mitt's head, but is never said. With all his preening, Mitt really thinks HE'S the Fairest of Them All, not his blonded wife. If the Republicans truly think narcissism is a sin in a politician, they'll stop calling John Edwards "The Breck Girl" for a moment and turn some of their attention on Mitt's modelish posing and well-maintained pommpadour. When he claims his wife's beauty is of paramount importance, he's really claiming by extension that so is his own.

If we're going to vote for president based on the "my-wife-is-prettier-than-your-wife-(or-husband)" argument, then the 2008 November election would be between Dennis Kucinich and Fred Thompson. And if that were to happen, both sides can arouse interest among male voters by staging the first-ever first-spouses' debate. We might not see more turnout on election day, but the TV ratings for that debate would be better than anything we've seen.

I think it's great that he has a sense of humor but would still make a HORRIBLE president.

Anybody who has read any of my post know that I am a STAUNCH Hillary Clinton supporter. With an exception of 2 or 3 typical haters these are some of the funniest posts you guys have written. I especially love the Hillary could a "lose a little in the caboose" and Bill is prettier. For you guys who scold and say folks should see that Romney was making a joke, you're the ones missing it. Everybody almost sees as it as humor and has responded likewise. Funny stuff today guys.

    You guys are vicious.

I love to scrutinize the candidates on both sides because of their lack of understanding and vision for what "We The People" really need and want. Both the Dems and Repubs are shallow and callous and will tell you exactly what you want to hear in one city and completely flip-flop in another for the sake of their constituants.

Our government is going to hell in a handbasket and the fires in California are moving from West to East.

But we need to understand, this was a joke. There is no need to dog this man's wife.

Name calling makes us, the rational people who will have to select the our next president regardless of the side of teh aisle he or she is on, just as petty as the people running.

Leave it to a Mormon to take it to the basement. And this is FUNNY? What you did to your dog is evil too. Why are none of your son's not serving in the Military again? Oh that's right, they are serving YOU! (oooh, scarey)

"That's a horrible comment by Romney, and though he said it jokingly, it really shows his attitude toward gender equality in America. His joking masks his refusal to accept a woman as President Of The United States. From experience I know that people who think this way are usually biased against minorities also, regardless of gender. Because I am a black american male, I am now more inclined to support Hillary Clinton after this comment."

…exactly. I'd never vote for him.

Totally agree. He's likely joking; many a serious/ugly thought is masked by joking,

    >>>It was a joke, true, but it was an incredibly sexist and stupid joke attacking the fact that there is a woman running for president.

EXACTLY. And it shows the thought processes behind his 'joke' and his unspoken/possibly unrealized contempt for women who dare to be involved in the political process.

    No vote for you, Mitt.

Hmmm...I'm not so sure Ann Romney is "prettier" than Bill Clinton. Mrs. Romney has that pinched, sun-baked, leather-like quality about her face that so many pampered Republican women share.

    Haw, haw. That's a real knee-slapper, Mitt.

Dang, you sure know how to fire up a crowd. I'll bet Leno is quaking in his boots right about now.

The ony thing funnier is you still think you can win the presidency – now there's a REAL joke!
