Romney: My wife is 'prettier' than Bill Clinton

Mitt and Ann Romney

AMES, Iowa (CNN) - Commenting Saturday on a new Time Magazine cover story titled "The Real Running Mates" - which focuses on the current crop of presidential candidates' spouses - Republican candidate Mitt Romney said his wife would make a "prettier first lady" than former president Bill Clinton.

"It has a picture of five of the possible first ladies," the former Massachusetts governor said. "In the upper left hand corner it has my wife, and then next to it, it has Bill Clinton. And she is a much prettier first lady than Bill Clinton, I can tell you that!"

The cover story features a photograph of a commemorative White House china plate. On it are the faces of five potential 'first spouses' - Bill Clinton, Ann Romney, Elizabeth Edwards, Judith Nathan and Michelle Obama.

Romney made the comments at his tent at the University of Iowa/Iowa State football game. When asked which team he would be supporting, Romney chose to stay neutral, but after a few more people asked the same question, he saw an opportunity to take another subtle jab at the Clinton family, this time toward Hillary.

"I know there's only one thing that would bring both of these Teams ... together, and that's to make sure that Hillary Clinton is not the next president of the United States," he said.

beg to differ! Mrs. Romney looks like she went to the same gender-switch doctor that Ann Coulter used!

Not surprised to hear Romney speaking in a way that indicates he views women based on whether they are 'pretty,' whereas not so much for men. Seems that manyfirst ladies (Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, etc.) areknown for their efforts to accomplish good for America, not for their looks. That being said, it was funny & while President Clinton is a smooth gentleman, he is getting up in years.

If this is a window to the soul of Mitt Romney as some of you geniuses are saying, fine, how about Shrillary and her racist "joke" about Ghandi working at a gas station in St Louis?

"She, the queen was obviously making a joke, are you part of the right-wing conspiracy as you must be by bringing up the TRUTH".

    Sounds about right.

Hillary does need to lose a little in the caboose…..another fat Dem President? Posted By Chris, Orlando : September 15, 2007 11:58 pm

Gee, since when do men complain about a woman having a "caboose"? I would think the reverse would be true. As a woman who also has a generous backside, I have found that most men appreciate a woman who is not flat as a board in that area.

As for gaining a few pounds, most candidates gain some weight while campaigning. They're eating on the road, don't have much chance to exercise and are expected to eat their way through every diner, state fair, barbecue, etc. So, please give the lady a break! She's running for president, not Miss America!!!

You people should be ASHAMED of yourselves. Maybe you should all send in pictures of your wife, mother, sister, daughter, etc. and let the rest of the world comment on their physical appearance. The sad thing is that you're the same bunch that would have attacked Romney had he NOT said his wife was prettier than Bill.

Ha-ha-ha... Yesterday at about this time I typed: "People,it's Saturday night, let's get out and have some fun instead of wasting time on this nonsense...." CNN did not post it, of course, they've thrown you a bone and 24 hours later I see you're still worked up about it and some of you have foam all over your mouth... these comments are so vicius, I'm not a Republican whatsoever, but you guys truly scare me... really, get a life...

I can't believe that some people can't take just a few minutes of their lives for a little joke. Is it that bad to have a little sense of humor? I have been told that laughter is the medecine. What happened to it?

Mitt Romney did not anything wrong. He was just joking. Can't we just take that? Does that little joke have to be a news headline? Does it have to drive so many critical hurtful comments? Come on.

Just to be on the safe side, I think Mitt Romney was wrong because hopeful first lady Bill Clint still have a lot of time to work on his make-up, have a little facial work then he will definitely look better than Romney's wife.

Ha! Mitt has a good sense of humor. Seriously, some of you commentators need to lighten up. He was being funny, not taking serious punches as the Clinton's. Moreover, he finds his wife attractive and complements her.

He loves his wife, and finds her attractive...those are good signs. At least we know we won't have to worry about Mitt when he's working around beautiful white house interns.

The candidate seems to forget that Bill Clinton might not be as good looking as his wife but what country did she run for eight years and have a 60% approval rating when he left office?

CNN is a joke–allowing such distasteful and ignorant comments to be posted about an obvious joke. I don't think any man wants to be referred to as "pretty." Bill Clinton has a sense of humor and was probably the first one laughing. I can't believe how many "haters" there are out there... chill out.

People who are qualifying Mitt Romney's comment as simply humour are being idiotic because if such a comment was made by a democrat, Hannity would be weeping in Faux studios. Mitt's comment is indescribeably stupid and reflective of the shallowness of his thinking capacity. This guy has disqualified himself from being a serious contender. Far as I'm concerned, this guy is the class of Tancredo.

when it was pointed out that his wife's face has a dent in it and looks like the surface of a tectonically volatile part of mars, while Clinton's skin is smooth and healthy looking the former Massachusetts governor responded: "I like my women like I like my cocaine, cracked in half."

I guess it's time for the media to start pushing decaf coffee again. The guy was asked a question and responded with a wise crack. The overwhelming majority of this blog is so hung up on semantic nuances that they don't even understand that they bash his wife. What did she do?

Go back to the Anna Nicole channel and stay home on election day if you don't get it.

Here's the plot for a 1960 sitcom: It features a married woman running for President (now how way out is that?). The writers could have ever so much fun. For instance, they could have a candidate from the opposing party make a sexist joke about how his wife would make a prettier first lady than the married woman's husband. Ha ha! Isn't that funny?

Romney is an idiot! If looks were what a presidency was about we would only visit Hollywood for candidates. Such an assinine comment shows who not to vote for. How plastic!!!!!!!

I'd like to add my question to the YouTube debates but don't have video...My questions are to Mitt Romney:Does the Mormon church have any women elders? Are African-Americans allowed to be members?Being a Mormon...what do you think of Warren Jeffs?

Sad, just sad. Mitt Romney has nothing to say on the important issues. I think Bill Clinton is far better looking than Mitt and his wife. If that matters at all...
