Mitt and Ann Romney
AMES, Iowa (CNN) - Commenting Saturday on a new Time Magazine cover story titled "The Real Running Mates" - which focuses on the current crop of presidential candidates' spouses - Republican candidate Mitt Romney said his wife would make a "prettier first lady" than former president Bill Clinton.
"It has a picture of five of the possible first ladies," the former Massachusetts governor said. "In the upper left hand corner it has my wife, and then next to it, it has Bill Clinton. And she is a much prettier first lady than Bill Clinton, I can tell you that!"
The cover story features a photograph of a commemorative White House china plate. On it are the faces of five potential 'first spouses' - Bill Clinton, Ann Romney, Elizabeth Edwards, Judith Nathan and Michelle Obama.
Romney made the comments at his tent at the University of Iowa/Iowa State football game. When asked which team he would be supporting, Romney chose to stay neutral, but after a few more people asked the same question, he saw an opportunity to take another subtle jab at the Clinton family, this time toward Hillary.
"I know there's only one thing that would bring both of these Teams ... together, and that's to make sure that Hillary Clinton is not the next president of the United States," he said.
- CNN Iowa Producer Chris Welch

How sad. CNN and democrats alike are reduced to heavy scrutiny of an obvious joke.
I suppose I should apologize on behalf of all humor-bearing republicans.
"The Running Mates" story is just an excuse to put Bill Clinton on the cover of Time Magazine. Competence sells.
Elizabeth Edwards' wife is prettier.
First Ladies historically entertained the spouses of foreign dignitaries. Who better than Bill Clinton to enterain the wives of foreign dignitaries? Heck he was made for this job!
Go Mitt. He's an example of how all spouses should treat each other. My wife is the most beautiful person in the world to me as well. I'm glad he is stating his conviction. I don't think he really cares if any of the rest of us agree or not.
Not a great tease. After reading this, I'm not interested in finding the story in Time. Wow...politicians are really un-funny. Man...both parties are such garbage. It's too bad candidates have to align themselves with one of these horrible political parties to be a serious candidate for pres or congress. If Democrats weren't such wusses, they'd be OK in positions of leadership. Alas, they're complete wusses paralyzed by nuance. And Repubs think their job is to preserve the foundations of white america forever. Man these guys suck. Maybe I should ignore these stories...
She might be prettier but she can't score on interns like Bill.
Wow. Are people on the left really that dense?!? It was a generic political joke, how thick do you have to be for that one to have gone over your head?
It is a joke people – humor – just a joke – unbelievable! Did you really care to hear what each first spouse felt about all the issues? A joke – the comments here are unbelievable.
So in today's day and age you aren't supposed to have a little fun? Don't get your panties in bunch over this, he was CLEARLY joking. If this is what you consider news, I hope to GOD democrats do not get into office in 2008. Republicans can cleary take a joke better.
Are you guys morons? Romney's comment was a joke. To say that he has been "reduced" to that is absurd. If you do your research, you will realize that Romney has the deepest policy positions out of all the candidates, Republican and Democrat. Go check out his "Strategy for a Stronger America".
And to the person that says Hillary Clinton is more qualified that Romney, what the hell have you been smoking?
God help us all if Slick Willy gets back into the Whitehouse. Bill and her "Thighness" should just go back to Arkansas! Please. We don't need them screwing up the place again.
A lot of men think Bill is prettier than Mitt's wife? Those are votes that Republicans will never win anyway.
I can't imagine what a bunch of wet blanket's the libs are. Sitting at a football game and joking about a magazine article gets you riled up.
Apparantly Democrats have no sense of humor whatsoever! So desperate to make Republicans look silly, when in fact you make yourselves look idiotic with your grasping attempts to discredit them!!
You people are completely pathetic. God forbid a candidate for president–ahem, excuse me, a Republican candidate for president–makes a joke. This nation's political environment has become completely polarized.
You can count on CNN to find the worst picture ever of Ann Romney. Not Cool. She is a beautiful woman.
Wow, I linked here through Drudge, and after reading a few comments, I thought I was on a web site run by the "Advocate". Y'all need to keep your preference to yourselves. And if you're for communism, then vote for Clinton!
Obviously, Mitt is counting on U.S. voters to choose the prettiest candidate, just as the voters of Massachutsetts do.
What are you people who are saying that Bill is prettier than Ann Romney thinking??? Now, I will say that CNN's picture of her isn't very flattering, but take a look at her other photos. Besides, I took one look at former President Clinton a couple weeks ago and am convinced that he has an STD which is being kept under the cover(probably stolen from the Oval office).
Many comments here are rude and uncalled for.
Even more analyze the joke with far to much seriousness.
And I find the poor choice of picture to be indicative of CNN's bias.
I support Mitt Romney.
Simmer down... It was a JOKE!
So it's true you libs have no sense of humor. He was obviously making a wisecrack. Well, since you libs are so bereft of humor, how's this little tidbit, before you go bashing Romney's wife as a stepford wife. Did you know she was diagnosed with MS? You guys are shameless.
Bill is the essence of the perfect pretty boy – he wins hands down without even seeing the other contestant
Thank you Democrats and liberals! Based on your responses on here you keep proving time and time again just how stupid you all are. Do you not understand humor? Maybe it's bad humor, but that doesn't matter. You all take things so literally...that part of your brain does not/will not distinguish between someone being serious and someone trying to make a joke. It's really quite pathetic.
Things will go from bad to worse if Romney is elected.
