Romney: My wife is 'prettier' than Bill Clinton

Mitt and Ann Romney

AMES, Iowa (CNN) - Commenting Saturday on a new Time Magazine cover story titled "The Real Running Mates" - which focuses on the current crop of presidential candidates' spouses - Republican candidate Mitt Romney said his wife would make a "prettier first lady" than former president Bill Clinton.

"It has a picture of five of the possible first ladies," the former Massachusetts governor said. "In the upper left hand corner it has my wife, and then next to it, it has Bill Clinton. And she is a much prettier first lady than Bill Clinton, I can tell you that!"

The cover story features a photograph of a commemorative White House china plate. On it are the faces of five potential 'first spouses' - Bill Clinton, Ann Romney, Elizabeth Edwards, Judith Nathan and Michelle Obama.

Romney made the comments at his tent at the University of Iowa/Iowa State football game. When asked which team he would be supporting, Romney chose to stay neutral, but after a few more people asked the same question, he saw an opportunity to take another subtle jab at the Clinton family, this time toward Hillary.

"I know there's only one thing that would bring both of these Teams ... together, and that's to make sure that Hillary Clinton is not the next president of the United States," he said.

I thought it was a great joke. I got a huge chuckle out of it. Bill better get used to it...he's going to be the "butt" of a lot of jokes if Hillary gets what she wants.

Wow, I just wasted 6 1/2 minutes of my life reading some of the most vulgar, inarticulate bromides directed at a very nice woman and mother. The coarseness of the dialogue is shameful and depressing, especially as it is in reaction to an inoffensive little joke which is meant as a compliment from one spouse to the other. I can't imagine that Bill Clinton is offended by it, why are some of you so venomous in your reactions? It is sad that some of you have a vote, as it does not bode well for the future of the republic. Lighten up.

I agee with Kevin from Illinois...liberals get a life and stop bashing and start thinking of solutions to those world problems you think you can do a better job at fixing. All the right wing hears from you are complaints, not solutions. Use your energy and work toward fixing the issues, you all sound like little children tattling to your mommy that the big republicans arn't nice and you don't like how they play. Fault finding is a waste of time and energy.

LOL! Bill Clinton has a better set of boobs than most of the liberal chicks I know too. Conservative chicks are hot and we all know it. Liberal chicks are so close minded, if you bring up anything beyond world peas or global warming their head explodes. I've learned from experience if you are going to date a liberal chick, give the dog a bone, it's the only thing that will shut her up.

It's a joke you smarmy CNN lurkers. No wonder CNN's ratings are in the tubes. With these kinds of comments...there is nothing worth reading.

One thing Mitt's comment and some of the comments on this article have in common is that they are both jokes.

Obviously, you left leaning democrats don't have a sense of humor. How 'bout a little levity occassionally? Of course, no one thinks that it matters how attractive the spouse is, it's a joke, okay? Now, back to the campaign.

Good lord, don't any of you have a sense of humor? I don't even like Romney and I thought that was funny.

Leave to liberals to get all emotionally wrapped up in ever little comment made. You don't ALL have to take everything so literally. Lighten up a little, take a breath, and don't be so sensitive.

You people get your feelings hurt too easily. Get a grip.

What I think is funny is some of you sound like you're re-electing Billy. You've rationalized that Hillary has this vast experience because of her close proximity to Slick Willy (though others will argue he's a lot closer to other women). You're going for the personna, and throwing out common sense in the process. Now, that's funny.

Just wanted to say thank you to those of you have have tried to point out, time and again, that Romney's statement was a JOKE. I don't think it was that funny, but that's not really the point.
I happen to be a Mormon and a woman, but I actually really like Obama.
To those of you making blanket (and obviously false) statements about Mormons, I'd suggest you check your facts. There is no polygamy in the mainstream LDS church now, but if you'd like to keep up those stale jokes, that's your choice.
Not that it matters, but Bill Clinton has gotten SO much uglier in the past few years, in my opinion. And frankly, after seeing him on The Daily Show, I think he sounds much less intelligent than he used to; speech writers and rehersed speeches really do make you sound smarter.

Given his history of position changes, I fully expect him to do a 180 degree turn next week, claiming instead that Bill Clinton would, in fact, be a prettier first lady than his wife because he "evolved."

All one has to do is read the comments in this forum to see how astonishingly dumb and hateful so many lib/Dem sycophants are. A light hearted joke during which a man compliments his wife sends waves of dim bulb Demos into fits of laughter at how dumb the candidate is to use his wife's looks as a serious campaigning selling point – but the joke is not only ON them, it IS them, because how can anyone be so dense and dim as to take a lighthearted joke as a serious campaigning point? Get a life, get a brain, and while you're at it, get a heart as well – there's not a thing wrong with the way his wife looks. Poor little Demos are always screaming about how Republicans are such meanies, claiming everything they say is a personal attack, but it's all hypocrisy, you guys are always the first with the nastiest, meanest, most gratuitous personal insults.

And you democrats think FNC is bad? CNN totally skewed the story AND look what they did to her picture. They deliberately made the lighting look poor to make her face look ugly. CNN, remember when you used to be a credible source of news??
