WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Hillary Clinton's sexuality is not the most pressing issue on the presidential campaign trail, but it is likely to get a fair amount of attention on a lazy Friday in the nation’s capital.
The Advocate asked Clinton about past rumors that she is gay.
The New York Democrat tells “The Advocate” that she is not a lesbian, according to a story in Friday’s edition of The New York Daily News.
"It's not true, but it is something that I have no control over," Clinton tells the magazine in a story set for publication next week.
“People will say what they want to say," she added.
The comments came in response to a question posed by Sean Kennedy, an editor of the Advocate: "How do you respond to the occasional rumor that you're a lesbian?"
Kennedy tells CNN he asked Clinton about the rumors because "they are a point of solidarity between her and the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community."
"Because her political opponents, and others, have used the word 'lesbian' to hurt her personally and politically, she knows first hand the stigma associated with homosexuality just as gay people do," Kennedy said. "She did not seem surprised by the question in the least and responded like the experienced politician she is."
The interview was conducted immediately after last month's Human Rights Campaign presidential forum.
UPDATE: The Advocate has published the full article on its Web site

No way is Hilary a lesbian. Lesbians have way to much self respect and class to be seen with the likes of her!

"I DON'T CARE IF SHE IS OR IS NOT GAY, JUST REMEMBER AMERICA SHE PROMISED US HEALTH CARE TWICE BEFORE, DO NOT VOTE TO HAVE THAT HAPPEN AGAIN!!! ANYONE BUT HILLARY!!!!!!!!!"
She was the first lady who virtually has no power. Her word was a suggestion. When she is president, her word will carry more weight. You people keep saying she promised things but didn't deliver. SHE WAS THE FIRST LADY....NOT A SENATOR, NOT A GOVERNOR, NOT A POLITICIAN.
If she's gay, I'd love to date her.
I am a republican and never a big fan of Hillary. I actually don't mind her political position as much as her political conviction. I certainly don't think she is a left-wing extremist, I simply have a lot of reservation about her character. Anyway, it is rather impolite to ask if she is a lesbian, isn't it? I have nothing against lesbain, but asking a married woman if she is a lesbian is just not very nice. Would you do it to a stranger? I won't and I think she deserve a bit more respect than this.
Why would anyone think she is a lesbian anyway? Is it because her husband cheats? Well, a lot of husbands cheats too and their wives are straight.
To paraphrase another lawyer from Arkansas, that, of course, depends on what the meaning of the word lesbian is.
The right question should have been..."if not a Lesbian, are you Bi-sexual"?
America, this is a very valid question on an important issue affecting, not only the US but the world, "Gay Marriages/Civil Unions." In case you need reminding.
We as voters should/have a right to know whether she is or isn't a Lesbian/Bi-sexual not because of who, how or when she does it but because because of her stand on the issue.
It is important to have a Commander in Chief who stands behind their beliefs/values and not lie their way to the much coveted price,i.e, being the most powerful individual in the world!
Of course, based on "Billary" history she is lying, lying, lying her way to the Whitehouse. And remember, where there is rumor coming from more than just a couple of sources...there must be truth to it! And yes, things do have a way of "coming out" sooner or later.....
I have little understanding–or patience–for all the posters who keep on begging CNN for "real" news. Supposedly they would call "real" what remains after the censors in the rest of the world have done with exicing what is not "official",(i.e. relevant?)
Grow up! It is up to you–the reader– to leave writings unread, just like you leave food on the table if you do not wish to eat it. You do that, don't you? Hm...
Ms Rodham Clinton if far more electable today then she was yesterday. Is that not "newsworthy" enough for you?
Funny how a strong, opionated, smart woman in the public eye is automatically viewed as a lesbian. I don't have words for you shallow minded, republican bigots. If a woman believes in human rights, woman rights, and doesn't take the back seat to her superiors (men), then she MUST be a lesbian. There's just no other explanation for something soo radical.
This story has legs and will not end with her flippant denial.
Last I heard, Larry Flynt is paying cash money for details on this one. More to come, closer to the election.
The democrats deserve this one in view of the holier than thou reaction to the Foley and Craig nonsense.
Can you say Janet Reno?
Whether she's a lesbian or not, she'd make a lousy president. Still, this matter seems quite important to people given the response here. Perhaps it's the implications of having a lesbian president that gets people thinking...does make one curious.
"It's not true, but it is something that I have no control over," Clinton. It all depends what you mean by "It" – this is such Clinton-speak. Wake up! She went to Wellesley – and ALL girls school.
Even if it turned out Bill & Hillary are swingers (which I really doubt ... but NONE of my damn business) as long as they are not doing harm to children (they can help SO many) ... it's NONE of OUR DAMN Business.
Like her or not, she has committed herself to her country. I say go Hillary !!! even though I am still undecided.
Something is very wrong with CNN to be posting this kind of garbage as news.
YAY!!!!

It is time for sanity to return to the world.
[Bill]That depends on what your definition of 'lesbian' is.[/Bill]
The question was rude. She should have countered with an equally rude, personal question. Her sexuality or lack of, has nothing to do with the job she is seeking. This rumor has been circulating for years, if there was any truth to it we would have seen someone's face all over the front page of every newspaper in the world. This kind of crap is bad politics ladies and gentlemen. I really would like to hear about ideas on how to fix the mess that America is in, not haircuts, sexuality and why Rudy can't get along with his kids. We have problems and I want to hear what we are going to do about them. Keep the gossip at the cocktail parties.
Great day Emily,
Per your post: Something is very wrong with CNN to be posting this kind of garbage as news.
The terrible thing to acknowledge (and yes I am an American) Americans have been dumbed down to a level that makes all sad ... not saying we are stupid ... hmmmm ... this isn't coming out well.
It is like we the people were hypnotized and even though we "saw" we didn't see We are awakening.
Knowledge and STOPPING possible crap before it starts ... YAY!!!
Sure yeah right (wink)
IF SHE IS A LESBIAN THATS HER BUSINESS AND IT SHOULD NOT BE ANYONES PLACE 2 JUDGE HER AS LONG AS THE JOB GETS DONE I COULD CARE LESS MAKING IGNORANT COMMENTS AND FEEDING INTO THE RUMOR MIGHT CAUSE AMERICA TO MISS ITS BLESSING
Sure you are, not that there's anything wrong with it!!!! 😉
trekks in Kansas:
I'm perfectly relaxed, thank you. Just to name two right-wingers who have made the accusation or insinuation on Fox: Dick Morris in at least one of his many appearances there, and Edward Klein in his error-filled tome, published (I believe) last summer. The National Review, another bastion of right-wing "thought," also published a lengthy Q&A with him. I could go on, but why?
Right-wingers are the ones who started these rumors and right-wingers perpetuate them. That's a simple fact. (Because these rumors persist, other outlets (like The Advocate) sometimes feel compelled to ask about them.)
It doesn't surprise me at all that you either: (a) genuinely don't know this or (b) are prepared to pretend that you don't. THE distinguishing characteristic of a right-winger is the propensity to believe that the world is exactly as he/she would like it to be.
That doesn't make me tense; it makes me laugh.
She has "Kankles" like a lesbian!!!
424 comments and counting. Hillary Clinton is quite a divisive figure. She and George Bush have that in common.
Wasn't there something in Cathy O'brien's book "Transformation of America" that sheds light on the subject of White House sexuality?
