Clinton: I am not a lesbian

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Hillary Clinton's sexuality is not the most pressing issue on the presidential campaign trail, but it is likely to get a fair amount of attention on a lazy Friday in the nation’s capital.

The Advocate asked Clinton about past rumors that she is gay.

The New York Democrat tells “The Advocate” that she is not a lesbian, according to a story in Friday’s edition of The New York Daily News.

"It's not true, but it is something that I have no control over," Clinton tells the magazine in a story set for publication next week.

“People will say what they want to say," she added.

The comments came in response to a question posed by Sean Kennedy, an editor of the Advocate: "How do you respond to the occasional rumor that you're a lesbian?"

Kennedy tells CNN he asked Clinton about the rumors because "they are a point of solidarity between her and the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community."

"Because her political opponents, and others, have used the word 'lesbian' to hurt her personally and politically, she knows first hand the stigma associated with homosexuality just as gay people do," Kennedy said. "She did not seem surprised by the question in the least and responded like the experienced politician she is."

The interview was conducted immediately after last month's Human Rights Campaign presidential forum.

UPDATE: The Advocate has published the full article on its Web site

If she can get this war stopped, I don't care if she's from Mars.

I am gay. I learned a long time ago that a person is what they say they are. If in my heart there is a certain certianly that another person is gay, it is futile to voice it until they are willing to voice it. If Hillary were gay, there would be at least one former partner that would have surfaced by now. If she is gay and is celebate, what is the point. If any one thinks that she married Bill just for politics, they are as niave as the person who says she married him for Love.

In the end – it is not our business what her prefereces are, just her behavior. So far that seems in check.

Oh what a surprise, the little men who cannot handle a strong woman come out with their favorite insult!!! How many women have been accused of being a lesbian when a man has felt rejected or intellectually inferior? It is par for the course and most of us just laugh and look at the guy with pity for being such an insecure little twerp. Pathetic....

"I can't help it"...sooooo does that mean she MIGHT have been born a lesbian? It would probably be better if she was. Ellen Degeneres seems to be more popular with middle-of-the-road folks than pretty much any politician these days. It is a SLOW day here in the capital

The Republicans are usually very good at dirty politics, slinging mud, spreading false rumors and so on. This attack on Hillary is so weak it's funny.

"Beyond every rumor their is an lota of truth." I just heard a rumor that behind every rumor there wasn't a lot of truth.

You can tell the Repubs are getting nervous. The rumors are gonna start flying now, Hillary. Just do what you have done in the past...keep your head up and your temper down. They can't hurt you if they can't get to you. It's gonna get more laughable as it goes along, especially if they take a good long look at the people in their own party, which I doubt they do. They have a "rehabilitation" ranch for pedophile priests out West...maybe they will let the Repub perverts in.

Other powerful sources in Washington indicate otherwise. The term 'lesbian' might not be the best term to use. Female relations might be a better term.

Oh please. Those stupid Right Wing Republicans will come up with anything. Of course not a single one of them will admit that they're the ones who started the rumors. Calling Hillary gay is just a cheap attempt by the Republican propaganda machine to get something started and keep her from getting elected. They know they can beat Osama bin Obamba and Edwards but they also know that they've got to bring out the big guns to beat Hillary. Laugh it off girl. It just shows how desperate they are.

CNN allows homophobic comments on here, but not comments critical of CNN's coverage. Amazing. How is this a news story?

Yeah Right, all the Gays are in the GOP I'm wondering if that's what the G in GOP stands for. At least she wasn't tapping people on the foot in the stall next to her, and look at Guliani, he sure do like dressing in drag, and wasn't there a Republican senator that came out the closet a couple of years ago, the G, in GOP.

The other guys must be getting desperate if this is all they can come up with to slow her campaign down!
If I was her, I would take this sort of attack to be a real positive – it means they know she has a real chance and is connecting with the American public.

I find it somewhat amusing that in the states it is the ultimate insult to brand someone as "gay". Come on you people, move into the 21st century, or if you can't do that, grow up and try focusing on the real issues which are screaming at you.

Of course she's not a lesbian. But some people don't know how to identify a powerful woman with lots of influence and drive. Those people are just small-minded, ignorant folks whose lots in life have not afforded them the drive that Mrs. Clinton has to be all they can be. They're what the rest of us call LOSERS.

Let's see – she stays in a marriage even though her husband repeatedly cheats on her, and she wears naught but pant suits.

If she is not a lesbian, she certainly wants people to think she is.

Give me a break! Who cares? I am getting so ashamed of Americans and their smallness. I could say that Guliani has no control over his private many women has he had? And poor Laura Bush-or Lynn Cheney,,,what kind of loving do you think they get from their less than well endowed, I am sure, men? Who cares?
Please America wake up and smell the destruction of our democracy, the loss of our free press, free speech and freedom in our private lives? Is this what we want our great nation to become? As if an Army general never lied? Grow up!
No more war! Peace now! Let's be the light of the century not the darkness

While the Senator was in college in Mass, a former co-worker who attended the same college and lived in the same dorm, told colleagues that the Senator was never involved with males. She always kept company with women who also never dated men.
