Clinton: I am not a lesbian

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Hillary Clinton's sexuality is not the most pressing issue on the presidential campaign trail, but it is likely to get a fair amount of attention on a lazy Friday in the nation’s capital.

The Advocate asked Clinton about past rumors that she is gay.

The New York Democrat tells “The Advocate” that she is not a lesbian, according to a story in Friday’s edition of The New York Daily News.

"It's not true, but it is something that I have no control over," Clinton tells the magazine in a story set for publication next week.

“People will say what they want to say," she added.

The comments came in response to a question posed by Sean Kennedy, an editor of the Advocate: "How do you respond to the occasional rumor that you're a lesbian?"

Kennedy tells CNN he asked Clinton about the rumors because "they are a point of solidarity between her and the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community."

"Because her political opponents, and others, have used the word 'lesbian' to hurt her personally and politically, she knows first hand the stigma associated with homosexuality just as gay people do," Kennedy said. "She did not seem surprised by the question in the least and responded like the experienced politician she is."

The interview was conducted immediately after last month's Human Rights Campaign presidential forum.

UPDATE: The Advocate has published the full article on its Web site

If this is true, at least there will not be a "blue dress stain" to get out of the closet!

Remember how Jim Thompson beat Adlai Stevenson III for Governor of Illinois in the 70's? After Stevenson said that Thompson was trying to make him look like a wimp, Thompson spent the rest of the campaign denying that he had called Stevenson a wimp. Thompson won the election, beating Stevenson who had a double digit lead in the polls prior to the incident.

ok... her political opponents really did not think this through...did they?
So, she is intelligent, succesful, compassionate, a mother, a wife, a politician...can't handle it? so they say she is lesbian! If this were true, I am afraid to say her political opponents have just lost over 80 million votes from the gay population (including Republican Congressmen) and another big number on men who think she is really attractive... they need to come up with a better strategy to take such a powerful woman down!

It's a shame on what the media do to people. If, it ain't Barry Bond, it's Mrs. Clinton. Go and pick on Bush, the way he has lied and getting our troops "kill".

Why are strong women always assumed to be lesbians? Suck it up- shes smart, politically successful, and richer than you. Just because you can't handle her doesn't mean she has to prefer women.

There’s been gossip for years that Hillary is a lesbian. I believe that if Hillary would wear more feminine attire….aka …….dresses and skirt-suits……. and not those dreadful pantsuits she always wears, then probably there wouldn’t be talk of her being a lesbian!! Let Bill wear the pants……..(but keep your fly zipped baby!! )

Dress more like a real woman, Hillary!

What is wrong with this woman? She wants so desperately to be president and I, for one would love to see the first woman president of the United States but, I say, “Get a stylist, Hillary!” With all her money……and Bill’s money…………surely she can afford to dress like a woman!

Homosexual behavior should not be compared to civil rights and equality. It is shameful, unnatural and sinful. I want people to stand up and not be pushed around by devils and imyphs posing as human beings concerning this issue. Any candidate who agrees with me has my vote !!

We all know Republicans like their women barefoot in winter, pregnant in summer or for extra excitement, call the DC Madam.

What is really nasty is all those kool-aide drinking, Faux News fans who jump on the bandwagon without a brain in their head. They'd vote for a bag of manure if it wore a "Loyal GOP" on it!

Also: a shout out to CNN: if you are truly moderating these comments, why allow Anonymous to post? If mental midgets don't have the backbone to use their name, their comments should be deleted.

People are crazy, Republicans. Are they not satisfied with that Stupid Bush being elected twice? Now they are going to put another idiot, Rudy or Fred or Mitt in WH, so try to hurt Hillary? She will handle any situation wisely, she is ready for dirty attacks, stupid games will never work for her like 2000, 2004 and Hillary wins this election. Republicans make themselves fool. Those crazy people are lower than fungus.

    Who. cares.
Calling someone 'gay' with no evidence is the last resort of an idiot opponent. Even caring that someone is gay with evidence would make me question the opponent's priorities.

None of our present candidates, on either side, have as many horrible things in their past as our presently serving President, so no one can really talk. I mean our sitting President has felony charges on his record, he shouldn't have even been allowed to run.

Why if this woman is against gay marriage would a gay individual vote for her. She is flat out saying you are not equal. I know that there are other issues, but to say you don't deserve something every other hetero does would make me very upset if I were gay. Oh ya, her husband passed the don't ask don't tell policy in the military. You know, the one that made Columbia kick the military off campus. Yet, it is OK for jack a minajab to speak. Sorry, wrong topic.

Please a gay person explain to me why they would vote for Hillary knowing what I just mentioned.

We can thank Pat Robertson (700 Club) for equating strong women with lesbianism when he stated "The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians." Thank you Pat, and all the wacko gullible extremist Christians who actually believe and worship you.

What a bunch of complete jacka**es. This kind of junior high-school behavior is just another illustration of how unequipped the Republican party is to run anything. They're calling people homos now!!!!! This will have me laughing all day!

CNN have deleted four of my comments as well. Sensorship is now the norm? What happened to freedom of speech? CNN reports on this rediculous rag sheet story, but don't want the backlash from it. Perhaps if CNN sticks to serious issues, sensorship would not be necessary. This will be deleted to. I had stated in one of my responses, ABC would not present this as a news item. That to was deleted as will this one.

Another sick momemt for the Republican party. Darth Vador(cheney) must be behind this crap. It could not be Giuliani, he's not intelleligent enough to come up with this. What a joke the republican party is. The world will breath alot better soon when the war mongers are out of office.

The United States has got to grow up when it comes to the private lives of our public servants. Apparently, the rest of the world laughed itself sick over our obsession with Bill's flings. God only knows how they will view this noise. In a country where the divorce rate is well over 50%, when are we going to grow up and admit that there are many kinds of marriages? Not every princess marries the handsome prince and then lives monogamously ever after.

Who cares? One thing all dems and liberals should have figured out by now is that no matter if Hillary or Obama gets into the White House (hopefully neither will), they are going to maintain troops in Iraq. You've been warned.

Whether any of you 'believe' Hillary is lesbian or not doesn't matter, the truth is, she is VERY lesbian. Read Cathy O'Brian's book "Trans-Formation of America". Here is the link

This lesbian accusation on hillary must be from the right wing conservatives (republicans), in a desperate attempt to discredit her.

Even if she is a lesbian, I like her and will vote for her in the next election.

    Go Hillary go!

There are not 529 comments. CNN have removed the complimentory comments about Hillary, but, don't insult Rudy because that WILL be deleted. Come on CNN stop sensorship. Freedom of speech is a right under the constitution and you are violating the rights of we who excesise this right.

Most progressives posting here are so stupid that they believe this was orchestrated by, well let's see – Karl Rove, George Bush and Dick Cheney. People, get a clue. It was asked by the Advocate, a Gay and Lesbian magazine. I am confident that reporter wasn't a plant by the Republican party. As much as I am sure you want to blame the fall of the Dodo bird on Republicans, YOU CAN'T. Just as you can't blame republicans for this.
