WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Hillary Clinton's sexuality is not the most pressing issue on the presidential campaign trail, but it is likely to get a fair amount of attention on a lazy Friday in the nation’s capital.
The Advocate asked Clinton about past rumors that she is gay.
The New York Democrat tells “The Advocate” that she is not a lesbian, according to a story in Friday’s edition of The New York Daily News.
"It's not true, but it is something that I have no control over," Clinton tells the magazine in a story set for publication next week.
“People will say what they want to say," she added.
The comments came in response to a question posed by Sean Kennedy, an editor of the Advocate: "How do you respond to the occasional rumor that you're a lesbian?"
Kennedy tells CNN he asked Clinton about the rumors because "they are a point of solidarity between her and the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community."
"Because her political opponents, and others, have used the word 'lesbian' to hurt her personally and politically, she knows first hand the stigma associated with homosexuality just as gay people do," Kennedy said. "She did not seem surprised by the question in the least and responded like the experienced politician she is."
The interview was conducted immediately after last month's Human Rights Campaign presidential forum.
UPDATE: The Advocate has published the full article on its Web site
It was only a matter of time until someone called her a lesbian. After all, how else can we categorize a woman seeking a powerful position in government (or anything)? So we lean on the most manly schema for such a woman we have: the butch lesbian. It is so ridiculous!!
Of course she is a lesbian, thats why Bill like Monica. Beyond every rumor their is an Iota of truth.

Home schooled, I presume?
Seriously? Why is this even a question? Because she is a strong woman and a politician who doesn't fit in to the traditional antiquated female role of submission, people question her sexuality? Wow, I guess we really haven't progressed all that much from 1960. Even if you don't like her or agree with her, you have to respect her. This just demonstrates that our society is still very sexist and uncomfortable with the idea of a strong woman.
While I wouldn't vote for Mrs. Clinton
1. I don't think she is a lesbian (or bi).
2. I don't care if she was.
3. That piece of the puzzle isn't why I would or would not vote for her.
Here comes the right wing mud slingers again - look out Hillary. The Conservatives will continue to attack her with no mercy. Hillary's hope is that the public will start to tire of their dirty politics and their nasty tactics. So far he is staying strong and being cool and mature. Believe it or not, Hillary Clinton has some interesting things to say.
Best of luck to you, Hillary. Don't let the slimy Republicans drag you down.
I heard she was actually a robot from the planet Zardoz. When will she deny THAT?
The latest research on body movements show that Hillary does indeed walk like a lesbian. And we all know.., sexuality is not a choice.
CNN is nothing more than a tabloid at this point....they can't be taken seriously any longer.
wouldnt surprise me...why else would she say with Bill....obvisouly he aint getting what he needs with her, and she doesnt care if he gets it somewhere else...she is just trying to keep together the happy family so that she can soar in the political world....so sad Hillary...get a life...go home n shut up
Why are you taking down all the comments?
what diffrence does it make if she is or isn't she's a very powerful woman and that what scares certain individuals, they have to start trashing her someway because there afraid she will be the First Female President.
She is a lesbo, I should know. Ask Bill thats why he slept with anything that moved.
Wow, that tired threadbare joke, "Have you quit beating your wife?", now qualifies as "investigative journalism".
Perhaps we should ask all of the candidates to respond to occasional rumors that they are gay? We can lead with the headline, "Candidate Denies Domestic Abuse".
No wonder the world laughs at Americans.
I guess I don't understand...is that supposed to be a cut-down to call someone a lesbian?
This is news? Everyone knows this already.
This is exactly the kind of things that the Republicans are going to do throughout the primary and general elections, if Hillary were to get the nomination. A Hillary nomination will motivate the Republican base like nothing else and we will end up with a Republican President and Congress and it will trickle down to the state level as well. Read the information – the Republicans WANT a Hillary nomination because they KNOW that this will happen. This is one of many reasons why those of us who don't want to see this happen must vote for another candidate. The candidate who it consistantly shows can beat every Republican out there, the candidate with the least baggage and the best ideas is Barack Obama.
Perhaps, like the "not gay" bathroom Senator, she is "not lesbian", but most of America believes they are both "BI-SEXUAL"!!!!!!!
"Of course she is a lesbian, thats why Bill like Monica. Beyond every rumor their is an Iota of truth.

Let us judge the quality of those with hatred in their hearts by the quality of their spelling and grammar.
Take this grammatically challenged person's contention to it's conclusion and everyone would be wearing a tin-foil hat. I bet her's is very nice.
yes u are
Why is CNN covering such stupid story? Instead give headlines to the stories like "Republican senators bowed under pressure from White House to oppose the bill to stop war funding or bring the troops home". You are just like any tabloid magazine.
She's a Clinton – need to parse the words carefully. Not a "lesbian" – what about a bisexual (remember, she claims to have slept with Bill at least once)?
Well then, Mrs. Clinton, those sure looked like your fingers under the bathroom stall in the lady's room.
I want to know when she will deny being a large black man.
wow. I said "everyone knows this already" and it got taken down? I guess I'll get my news from somewhere that allows free speech next time. later CNN, no wonder you're falling to the bottom of the news competition. Get with it, it's called "interactive media."
I'd like to know why we want to keep putting family in office, Bush's and it seems like the clintons will be next.
