Clinton: I am not a lesbian

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Hillary Clinton's sexuality is not the most pressing issue on the presidential campaign trail, but it is likely to get a fair amount of attention on a lazy Friday in the nation’s capital.

The Advocate asked Clinton about past rumors that she is gay.

The New York Democrat tells “The Advocate” that she is not a lesbian, according to a story in Friday’s edition of The New York Daily News.

"It's not true, but it is something that I have no control over," Clinton tells the magazine in a story set for publication next week.

“People will say what they want to say," she added.

The comments came in response to a question posed by Sean Kennedy, an editor of the Advocate: "How do you respond to the occasional rumor that you're a lesbian?"

Kennedy tells CNN he asked Clinton about the rumors because "they are a point of solidarity between her and the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community."

"Because her political opponents, and others, have used the word 'lesbian' to hurt her personally and politically, she knows first hand the stigma associated with homosexuality just as gay people do," Kennedy said. "She did not seem surprised by the question in the least and responded like the experienced politician she is."

The interview was conducted immediately after last month's Human Rights Campaign presidential forum.

UPDATE: The Advocate has published the full article on its Web site

Women who are "strong" are stereotyped as lesbian-rather than talented leaders. When will this end? This stereotype is offensive to all women, including lesbians. Straight America (esp. the male presidential candidates) does not spend time defending their sexuality. Homophobia is alive and well in this election and in this country.

"Let us judge the quality of those with hatred in their hearts by the quality of their spelling and grammar.
Take this grammatically challenged person's contention to it's [sic] conclusion and everyone would be wearing a tin-foil hat. I bet her's [sic] is very nice."

Not to quibble, but there's no apostrophe in the word'hers', and the word you were looking for before that was 'its' - not the contraction for 'it is'.

It is just common sense for you morons and gays out there who state she is not. She has the gay votes the women vote (because they think she stayed with Bill out of compassion – no she is a lesbo who married and had a kid for the power). She is a very dangerous person that is the bottom line. If you like to live in Cuba or Russia go ahead and vote for her because not just the socialism she will turn our great country into but eventually a dictatorship. Those who speak against her then will disappear as many of her enemies already have. I'm sorry no... they committed suicide or the brakes failed in their vehicles or was it an airplane crash. Wake up America. Do you really want to unleash the Devil in America? And for all the moron's who do not support what our troops do to protect our freedoms – stop being the cowards that you are and go live in a muslim country if you think it is better than what we have here today. WAKE UP IDIOTS.

How is this news? Who cares if she is a lesbian? I think news agencies should focus on politicians campaign promises, their record, and not their personal lives. Gimme a break, you people need to grow up.

This is truly a sickening story that she even has to answer that question. The fact remains that only people who a possessed of "gay fear" are Republicans. They've demonized the subject so that everyone has to look four ways before crossing a street. This is the most despicable news. It proves the bigotry and hatred for just being human. I'm going to form a new group called Republicans for Suppositories.

Republicans can't handle the fact she's a strong and driven woman who will very shortly be President of the United States and Commander in Chief of the USA Armed Forces.

Obviously, otherwise responsible political reporters are comfortable embarrassing themselves as long as the subject is a Democrat.

    Open letter to CNN:

Alleged Israeli airstrike into Syria; crumbling American infrastructure (bridges, roads), continuing war in Iraq and Afghanistan, racial tensions heating up . . .

Need I go on? How about reporting on something of SUBSTANCE???

It really does not matter – gay or staright ; I beleive all of the politicians are forgetting one major thought: The politicians of this country – Republican and Democrats work at our (the peoples) pleasure not the other way around. With all the fund raising and mud slinging – it makes the day time soaps really bland. When are they (the people) going to smarten up and get rid of every politician and start over with fresh and thoughtful leaders?

This is so typical. Whenever a woman does something that is considered a "man's domain", suddenly the only explanation is that she is a lesbian. Women athletes are often seen this way. Because she is a pioneer, as the first woman to run for president and actually has a chance insecure people are calling her a lesbian to make the fact that she is a woman in politics make sense to them.

Whether lesbian or straight has nothing to do with her ability to lead.

If she were a lesbian and she had lost her status, then perhaps this country isnt as free as we thought. Im speaking as a hetro myself.

Does it really matter? What matters is a person's integrity not her sexual orientation! I am a republican and don't necessarily agree with all of Mrs. Clinton's democratic views, but I still respect her as an american, a senator and a great public voice.

This is NOT newsworthy. By making an issue out of a complete and total non-issue, CNN and every other two-bit media outfit play right into the sensationalistic nonsense that we have to tolerate as news these days. How about you report on something substantive, rather than making a headline out of the fact that a strong, competent, self-avowed heterosexual woman asserts her heterosexuality. CNN should be embarrassed for making headlines out of these topics. I'll be getting my news from other sources.
