Romney criticizes his fellow Republicans in a new ad.
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney criticizes his fellow Republicans for failing to control spending, neglecting to take action on illegal immigration and the party’s own ethical lapses, in a new television ad set to air Sunday in the Washington, D.C. market.
Romney’s new 30-second ad “Change Begins With Us” will air during NBC’s “Meet The Press,” and will be complemented by a full page “open letter” print ad set to run Sunday in the New Hampshire Union Leader and in Monday’s edition of Roll Call, an influential Capitol Hill newspaper.
“If we're going to change Washington, Republicans have to put our own house in order,” warns Romney, as he walks towards the camera. “We can't be like Democrats – a party of big spending. We can't pretend our borders are secure from illegal immigration. We can't have ethical standards that are a punch line for Jay Leno.”
Romney adds, “When Republicans act like Democrats, America loses. It's time for Republicans to start acting like Republicans. It's time for a change and change begins with us.”
Romney is seeking the GOP presidential nomination.
The television ad is currently running in the key early primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. The ad is designed to reach conservative GOP base voters, who are frustrated with how Republicans are operating in Washington.
Evan Tracey of TNS Media Intelligence/CMAG - CNN’s consultant on television advertising - said Romney’s decision to buy time on “Meet The Press” was a calculated move to advance his “change” theme with opinion leaders and activists.
Kevin Madden, Romney’s campaign spokesman, said the former governor’s blunt message of the need for change within his own party is being well received by Republicans from across the country.
“They agree that it is a powerful message that serves as a call to Republicans to restore the American public’s faith in our party as one of fiscal conservatism, security and high ethical standards,” Madden said. “When we do that as a party, Gov. Romney believes we can lead a movement to change Washington.”

Sure...lets believe campaign promises from someone who has flip flopped on every issue
I KNEW Romney would take the Republican party to heart and infuse new life and marketability in it. He loves a challenge and he loves America and what it stands for.
I fully expect to see lots of juvenile posts from the bigoted, anti-Mormon crowd and Democratic foes. However, I look forward to the intelligent comments, both rebuttals and the supportive ones.
Who is Romney think he's kidding? Greed, selfishness, lies, overspending, moral lapses and double standards–these aren't Republicans acting like Democrats, these are Republicans acting like Republicans!!!
And all of America now knows it!
I think if we just ignore this man he will go away, then we will all be happy. He is becoming a gnat and nobody in their right frame of mind will vote for him.
Mr Plastic aka Nitwit Romney needs to buy a clue rather than ad space. The only Republican worth his salt is Ron Paul. Fortunately their are a number of Democrats that could provide the leadership this country desperately needs.
Romney can take on the GOP all he wants...They are still not going to make him the nominee...him and his magical underpants!
I am not American. I cannot vote.
So, Mr Romney, The Dems are the party of "big spending". I thought that President Bill Clinton had put the books in the black. Solidly. I remember when the big debate in Wash was on how best calculate and apprpriate the untold $,000,000,000,000s that were about to flow in.
But I cannot remember when it was that the Dems spent $1,000,000,000,000 on war games. And I could not even guess what the upcoming "real" wars will cost.
Shawnie,
You hit it! I've seen what Romney can do as Governor of a neighboring state. He can get the GOP back to what it should be. Leaders must serve as examples, not as the butt of jokes.
The Democrats have Hillary and Hsu, we have Craig and a few others. It's time for a strong two party system free on politics as usual. Romney is not of Washington, D.C. and is a proven manager. His faith is his own and of no concern to this voter nor should it be to anyone else.
Why does CNN report on this man. He's about as relevant as, oh, a cockroach I smashed last year.
Romney could have shown leadership and integrity by commissioning a sincere and nonparitsan political message.
Instead his handlers crafted a marketing ploy that cowers from needed constructive critism, maligns "THEM", and impunes "us".
His shortcomings are reflected by this disingenuous behavior and so the consumer of information is forewarned.
Romney is desperate. This move is clearly a gamble to break through the sloggy period his campaign is currently in. It's time to pander to the rank-and-file, not the GOP elite.

Mitt Romney is a giant coward. He acts like an elementary school bully trying to garner the support of weak minded 2nd graders. Time after time he makes unfounded, fallacious attacks against Democrats – and now even against Republicans! This guy's entire sad political life is one giant smear campaign.
Romney is doing well, and is even rising in states like California and Florida.. If he pulls of victories in the early states, I wonder if anything can stop him.
With all due respect not only because of his existential beliefs, I expect Romney fair better in higher Mormon faith densities north and south of the farwest UT, NV, AZ, CO, NM, ID, WY, CA, WA, OR etc.

AMEN. Couldn't have said it better!
The fact is that Mitt is just another re-packaged republican who's giving the same old song and dance about anti-immigrant, anti-gay, anti-choice. But when he comes down to reality, they all give the same speech, he's no different. He could just say that god said he should be president...I forgot, that's all ready been used, but maybe that will work for him, too.
With all due respect not only because of his metaphysical beliefs, I expect Mitt Romney to fair better in higher Mormon faith densities north and south in the farwest USA states of UT, NV, AZ, CO, NM, ID, WY, CA, WA, OR etc.
Has a single candidate for the Democrat party presidential nomination taken issue with any element of the Democrat party base, to wit: the pagans, the atheists, the tree huggers, the earth worshippers, the flag burners, the draft dodgers, the feminists (hahahahahaha), the race baiters, the America haters or the fundamentalist homosexualists?
There is that myth again. 'Republi-
cans are fiscally responsible and Democrats are not.'
Last week it was Greenspan and this week Romney. They are still on message.
In reality however, the two biggest presidential spenders of all time were???? Republicans – Reagan and Bush.
Americans now know that Republicans are only interested in cutting spending on programs which don't help the wealthiest 5% of the population, while at the same time cutting taxes for the same 5%.
If you don't like where Romney stands, wait five minutes, it'll change!
This guy was a flop in the state he was elected to govern. He spent more days out of Masachusetts than he did in it. There were even columns written asking folks to report "Mitt sightings".
I wouldn't put much stock in what he has to say. He's an empty suit, all fluff and no substance.
I regretted voting for him almost immediately.
Don't be fooled by this guy.
Ron Paul is my hero.
Sure, NOW Romney want's to take on his own Party. Where was he and all the other TRUE Republicans(haha) at when all this BS was going on a few years back. Romney acts like this a current problem that he just found out about them yesterday. I think it's "too little too late" if you ask me because he should have spoken up years ago.
Republicans ARE acting like Republicans, Uncle Mitty.
Restroom pick-ups, brothels, stealing, killing hundreds of thousands in Iraq for oil....
Get a clue, Mitt. Scumbag.
Tom from Texas, your comment was so blisteringly outrageous I'll quote it in its entirety:
"Has a single candidate for the Democrat party presidential nomination taken issue with any element of the Democrat party base, to wit: the pagans, the atheists, the tree huggers, the earth worshippers, the flag burners, the draft dodgers, the feminists (hahahahahaha), the race baiters, the America haters or the fundamentalist homosexualists?"
I'm more tempted to laugh at such ridiculous drivel than respond to it. But unfortunately it seems plenty of conservatives make similarly asinine remarks.
"The pagans" ... look up this word, Tom. "Pagan" means of a religion outside the norm, or, more commonly, non-Christian. So you have a problem with anyone who isn't Christian. Just have the courage to come out and say so, Tom.
"The atheists" ... it might "alarm" you to know that an estimated 15 percent of the U.S. population falls into the nonreligious/atheist category. That's more than Jews, Muslims and Hindus combined. That's also larger than the U.S. black population. So go ahead and blast 15 percent of Americans if you want, but know that you can't win an argument about reason and logic with someone whose entire world view is based upon the use of and respect for reason and logic.
"The tree huggers, the earth worshippers [sic]" ... by this I presume you mean people who give a damn about the planet... moving on...
"The draft dodgers" ... oh, let's talk about The Champagne Unit, shall we?
"The race baiters" ... this coming from the party that brought you Willie Horton...
"The America haters" ... ouch, you've got 'em there! The Democrats' "America-hating" platform finally comes around to bite them!
"The fundamentalist homosexualists" ... well I would agree that someone who is gay is probably "fundamentally" gay. Other than that, I have no idea what you mean by this... oh, unless you're trying to conflate homosexuality with fundamentalist Islamic terrorism... Tom, you sly fox you!
Well Tom, I must say I am simply overwhelmed by your grasp of sound reasoning and solid argumentation. I give up! I'll move to Canada now!
