Romney takes on GOP in new ad

Romney criticizes his fellow Republicans in a new ad.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney criticizes his fellow Republicans for failing to control spending, neglecting to take action on illegal immigration and the party’s own ethical lapses, in a new television ad set to air Sunday in the Washington, D.C. market.

Romney’s new 30-second ad “Change Begins With Us” will air during NBC’s “Meet The Press,” and will be complemented by a full page “open letter” print ad set to run Sunday in the New Hampshire Union Leader and in Monday’s edition of Roll Call, an influential Capitol Hill newspaper.

“If we're going to change Washington, Republicans have to put our own house in order,” warns Romney, as he walks towards the camera. “We can't be like Democrats – a party of big spending. We can't pretend our borders are secure from illegal immigration. We can't have ethical standards that are a punch line for Jay Leno.”

Romney adds, “When Republicans act like Democrats, America loses. It's time for Republicans to start acting like Republicans. It's time for a change and change begins with us.”

Romney is seeking the GOP presidential nomination.

The television ad is currently running in the key early primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. The ad is designed to reach conservative GOP base voters, who are frustrated with how Republicans are operating in Washington.

Evan Tracey of TNS Media Intelligence/CMAG - CNN’s consultant on television advertising - said Romney’s decision to buy time on “Meet The Press” was a calculated move to advance his “change” theme with opinion leaders and activists.

Kevin Madden, Romney’s campaign spokesman, said the former governor’s blunt message of the need for change within his own party is being well received by Republicans from across the country.

“They agree that it is a powerful message that serves as a call to Republicans to restore the American public’s faith in our party as one of fiscal conservatism, security and high ethical standards,” Madden said. “When we do that as a party, Gov. Romney believes we can lead a movement to change Washington.”

That's been the problem for more than twelve years. The Republicans have always acted like Republicans, hateful and crooked. They can't blame anybody but themselves. They just need to look in the mirror to see the problem.

Mitt's gotten the talking points!A little late and too much baggage for Mitt to pull off,I'd rather have heard them from guiliani.Somebody on the right has to eat that excrement sandwich and throw the theocrats out.Whoever does will lead the republican party,in let's say 4 or 5 years.Good sign though that they've recognized their shortcomings.Too late for this round.

Moderates in the republican party?Knock off the hard stuff Chris! You're completely plastered or an anti-american.The democrats have a lock on moderates. The reds are all radical subversives and everybody knows it.Social conservatives(something Rudy is NOT)are proven to be mentally deficient. The term conservative itself has become a word used to describe the intellectually challenged.Republicans have absolutely no chance even if the democrats put up nobody.Throw the theocrats overboard before it's too late to salvage anything.I think Rudy can do it,and down the road something of value could be gained.Moderates simply don't support radical subversive theocrats for any amount of cash.Mitt's going to beat him to it.He better get going.

    Brad,

Please don't give up now. We need your vote in the South Carolina Republican primary, so that we can rid ourselves of Linsey Graham. Once you have help us retire Graham, then feel free to flee to Canada. Thank you for your help.

Mitt Romney has every right to call fellow Republicans to repentance. After loosing in the Senate race to Kennedy, he could have just gone back to his high paying job in venture capital and consulting, but he didn't. Most Americans don't know much about the financial and ethical mess the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing committee was in. Accusations and later indictments for bribery and numerous other white collar crimes committed in order to get the 2002 Games (as many other host cities had done before) were the daily headline in SLC. Mitt came in and cleaned house. Anyone on the board who owned a company with a games contract was asked to resign. Anyone who had been involved with any of the questionable conduct was fired. He pulled off a huge turn around in a major crises, and made pulled off an Olympic games that set the standard, making America proud in the process. He deserves much more credit than many Republicans are willing to give him, not to mention Democrats. He is the one who can clean house with the party. If people knew him better they would be more willing to vote for him.

As far as his "flip flops", sometimes a person sees a previous position is not the best solution to the current problem. In a dynamic world, a leader needs to study out the issue as it now is, look at all the potential solutions, and then implement the best policy for the time and place. There is a big difference between a person’s policy positions and principals. Mitt's principals have not changed, even if his policies have. That is a sign of strength and wisdom- and calling Republicans to repentance shows he has both.

ELB from Arlington Virginia captured Mitt Romney 100percent. I am from massachusetts and Romney did great thing with the state. First he was able to cut the state deficate without raising taxes and he showed a high moral conduct by returning campain contrubutions to Aggerate industries which supplied bad concrete to the big dig, without being forced. He also did a great job at cleaning up the corruption at the olympic games, and I know people that have competed and help run them and the olympics has a burrocracy that rivals washington. Also, I am still in school and I trust him to produce an economic situation so I will easily get a good job when I enter the work force. He understands corporations and buisnesses need lower taxes because we want them to stay in the country not leave, also to revamp the health system without a high cost and getting rid of the stupid death tax, you shouldn't pay to die.

The primary is not a real vote and that's why the DNC can do this. The primary is nothing more the these political country clubs voting on their man of the hour. There is no constitutional need for a primary vote, it is completely artificial.

I don't see why the Florida delegates refuse to set a new date. I agree with the DNC, moving the 2008 election to 2007 is ridiculous plus it jeopardizes the integrity of the vote by forcing more people to vote in harsher winter weather. I'm sure it's some hair brain GOP scheme. They probably think less liberal will be able to show up in their hybrids and import cars instead of pickup trucks and SUV's.

The ruling doesn't effect Floridians right to vote as their less that educated delegates suggest. It merely invalidates their ability to pick their boy out of the limited lineup made available by the DNC. Unlikely the primary vote will be that close anyway.
I'd be highly surprised if Hilary didn't win easily.

So, cheers to the DNC for standing by it's rules, however ineffective they may be. Seems to me this is yet another case for more federal regulation in voting.

What's next, every time the GOP gets bad poll numbers ahead of an election they reschedule the entire voting process. With a precedent like that every state could set their primary any time throughout the year slowing elections and making them more complex and costly. Perhaps for FL it doesn't matter since they don't have bad weather, but for many states being forced to follow FL's lead to keep order in the election process it will means increases costs, liability and danger to voters going out in winter conditions or having to stop drop their Christmas plans and vote.

It's ridiculous, voting takes places after the New Year for a good reason because it's cheaper, easier and safer.
A lowly FL governor should simply not be allowed to make decisions that complicate the entire voting process for the whole country. What we have here is more republican inefficiency in a desperate attempt to confuse voters and complicate the voting process. I guarantee the governor knew his plan would adversely effect the Democrats more than the GOP. This childish partisan bickering is wasting endless amounts of tax money and defrauding voters. Floridians needs to get out and clean this republican scum from their state or continue to live in crime, debt and fraud.

Mitt Romney's candidacy has brought out the theological issue. Romney's church believes in a new, improved Bible magically provided by an angel. This brings out the chapter-and-verse Bible thumpers who are disguising their theological arguments as political ones. Now, no two members of the "chapter-and-verse" crowd can agree on the meaning of a single verse in the Bible, but they can all agree that Mormonism is heresy. Therefore, Romney is a heretic. Therefore, he is to be opposed so that Jesus can see and reward the opposers. This group is contaminating the political discussion with false issues, finding a way to oppose Romney without revealing the real reason.

That aside, Romney is a rare creature: a Conservative who apparently knows how to govern. He seems to have done a good job with the Olympics and a capable job as governor of Massachussetts. As President, he would presumbly push the Conservative agenda: greater income and lower taxes for the wealthy. This means fewer services, greater local taxes, and less justice for the rest of us.

It is a tough decision for a Liberal. Should I support a competent Conservative who will do a good job of ruining my nation? Or is it better to support an incompetent nitwit like Bush or Reagan, who will go through the federal government like a bull in a china shop?

I'm beginning to really like this guy. He's such a nimble strategist.

Obviously, Romney is perceptive enough to have figured a way to ride the new, "anybody but a Republican," wave by distancing himself from his own party, while not claiming to align his own with the platform of any Democrat.

Which is not to say that he has a "platform," per se, but an anti-platform. That is, declare nothing, declare for nothing, point fingers at everybody else while professing holier-than-thou platitudes, and go whichever the wind blows.

    Matt:

I agree with you about the party rules – the FL Dems agreed to them as they are part of the DNC. However – this was not a Republican "thing". The Florida House & Senate passed it nearly unanimously – and we have a lot of Democrats in this. They all supported the date change.

Also – the primary election for Florida is still in 2008. It is now January 29th. They just moved it back several weeks so Florida (one of the biggest swing states – if not the biggest) could have more of a say in the primary process. By the time the primary was held in the past – the presidential nominees were almost always already decided. Governor Crist (who is a RINO anyway) was only submitting to what the citizens and legislative body wanted.

From the party that "wants every vote to count" this move seems hypocritical in some ways by the DNC.

It shocks me to say I am proud of my Senator – Mr. Bill Nelson for suggesting he will consider legal action against the DNC.

It's very hard to discuss serious issues when commenting on a republican. It is their problem that they sink so low that their real substantive policy issues are hidden in the closet while silly social issues take the forefront. If you went to the DNC blog and read some really intense discussion of issues, you'd see why so few people have the intelligence or the patience to get through it.Soap opera level works for right-wingers best.

    Bobby,

Romney is so outspoken on all the issues. He just published a manual of his stand on all the issues today and it is very detailed. You can get it at his website – mittromney.com Your anti-platform comment is an obvious biased opinion that doesn't attempt or want itself to be based on reality.

Mr. Romney needs to quit.....His message is full of holes.....Clinton had a balance budget that he corrected from Bush I after his war. Now we have another war with no tommorow. He is right about one thing....the Republican party has made its mistakes. A good tactic but it is much too late. There will be no Republican in the next White House just like the Republicans Congress that was thrown out. The Republicans had the White House and Congress. They blew it because there was no plan and they did not listen to the man with the plan and he was our former Secretary of State and war hero and if he wanted it, could have been a presidential nominee prior to this Iraq situation. General Powell would have ended the Iraq situation in a matter of weeks with proper military men and resources, but the President did not listen to his suggestion and the rest is history.
