Coulter: We want 'Jews to be perfected'

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Conservative commentator and best-selling author Ann Coulter may find herself in the midst of a controversy for comments Monday suggesting America would be better if everyone was Christian.

Asked by CNBC host Donny Deutsch what the U.S. looks like in her dreams, Coulter said it would look like the Republican National Convention in 2004

"People were happy,” she said, according to a transcript provided to CNN by CNBC. “They're Christian. They're tolerant. They defend America." (Video: Watch Coulter's comments on CNBC)

When Deutsch responded, "It would be better if we were all Christian?" Coulter said "Yeah."

Deutsch, himself Jewish, continued to press Coulter on her remarks, asking, "We should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians then?"

"Yeah," Coulter responded, adding "Well, it's a lot easier. It's kind of a fast track."

"You can't possibly believe that," Deutsch responded. “You can’t possibly. You’re too educated.”

"Do you know what Christianity is?" Coulter replied. "See, we believe your religion, but you have to obey. We have the fast track program."

Later in the interview Deutsch asked Coulter if she doesn't want any Jews in the world, Coulter responded, "No, we think - we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say."

"Wow, you didn't really say that, did you," Deutsch said.

"Yeah, no,” Coulter replied. “That’s what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws. We know we're all sinners."

Deutsch said he was personally offended.

"No. I'm sorry. It is not intended to be," she said. "I don't think you should take it that way, but that is what Christians consider themselves: perfected Jews. We believe the Old Testament. As you know from the Old Testament, God was constantly getting fed up with humans for not being able to live up to all the laws. What Christians believe - this is just a statement of what the New Testament is - is that that's why Christ came and died for our sins. Christians believe the Old Testament. You don't believe our testament."

Deutsch continued to call Coulter's comments anti-semetic.

"No, no, - I don't want you being offended by this," she responded. "This is what Christians consider themselves, because our testament is the continuation of your testament. You know that. So we think Jews go to heaven. I mean, [the late Rev. Jerry] Falwell himself said that, but you have to follow laws. Ours is "Christ died for our sins." We consider ourselves perfected Christians. For me to say that for you to become a Christian is to become a perfected Christian is not offensive at all."

i say: let her keep talking!!!

the more ann coulter opens her mouth, the more she makes the neo-conservative movement demonstrate what it is: a bunch of manipulative, ego-driven, power-hungry, people-hating numnutz.

go on ann: tell us more about how you'll change the world for the better as a "good christian". and oh: please pass the popcorn: this is getting really fun.

Few of you responding don't seem to be able to acknowledge something: Coulter being able to say what she says is what this country is all about; freedom. Freedom of speech, religion and yes freedom to have what some think is radical thought. Coulter isn't a Nazi, weird at times and intentionally inflammatory yes. This country is so wrapped up in political correctness and pandering to making no one slightly upset or uncomfortable with ANYTHING that a healthy discussion can't occur without it spiraling into a melee of antisemitic accusations. Religion is a polarizing force that by nature of wanting to "spread the news" and convert others to own own beliefs flies in the face of total acceptance of others religions. We can and should strive for peaceful coexistence with all peoples and religions but lets get real..Ann Coulter didn't start this fire. If you have beliefs in any higher power and practice any organized religion..you believe your beliefs are right. I hope you do, otherwise why do you believe them? As is always the case, stop worrying so much about others...look in the mirror first, educate yourself, improve yourself, be the best person you can be. That ultimately is the biggest difference you can make..to yourself, your family and as and your legacy to the world. Stepping off soapbox now.

To whomever will listen: Jesus is God. He did not come to start a religion, but to speak of the ONLY way to achieve eternal life. Jesus is the ONLY way to life. Only faith in Him and obedience to all of his commands (the 10 commandments plus whatever else he commanded in Scripture) will save anyone's life. This world gives you endless opposing groups...Christian/Muslim, Black/White, Democrat/Republican, American/European...and so on. And while we waste precious, borrowed time arguing these distinctions, we miss the only thing that matters..The truth is that there are only TWO groups of people: Those who believe in and obey Jesus and those who do not. No other man-made distinctions mean anything to Jesus. Those who obey Him have been promised eternal life. Those who do not obey him will die forever, never to live again.

So if you will live, choose the only way to life. Jesus Christ the Lord and King.

Why am I not suprised by these comments. They reflect the attitude of many conservatives. We're right, your wrong. End of story. The funny thing is, if Coulter knew anything about the history of her enemies, she would have known that Islam is,according to it's practioners, the perfection of Christinaity. So if her reasoning is correct,i.e.that Christinaity came after Judism so it is 'perfected', then Islam would be the 'perfection' of Christianity because it came to being 600 years after Christ. Somehow I don't see her buying that, so why would we belive her? Or any of these hucksters of all "faiths" selling that which they can not possibly know, our fate at our death. She,like they, rely on fear, supersition and ingnorance to advance there beliefs, and maintain the power they so desperatly want.

When did Ann Coulter become a Christian. This is the first I'm hearing about this. She probably doesn't even read the bible and can't quote the basic tenents of the faith. She must be joking. When did all Republicans become Christian? I'm sure there are a lot of heathens she knows and hangs out with. She makes terrible remarks about other people. She's obviously anti Semitic and anti minority. Please please go away Ann.

yes, us jews are always stirring up trouble.

What will be fun to see is when this comes back and bites her in the ass next time she tried to publish a book.

Can you just imagine on the phone to a publisher ,

"I have a new book! its better than the last one should i bring it into the office?"

"Im sorry Ms. Coulter, there is no room in this inn either"

    *beeeeeeeeeeep*

Im 16, but if I were in the public eye and just so happened not to be jewish and also while i'm at it disliked jews, you keep it in your head and in your home because THE JEWS WALK AMONG YOU and you never know when one will leap out the wood work.

i think im correct in saying that god would disagree. jews are the chosen people which god has a promise with. who is ann coulter to say that christians are perfected jews, is that not blasphemy? is saying that god did something well, but not perfect basically saying that god made something wrong or imperfect... which begs the question... if you believe that god is perfect and does nothing wrong, yet he made a promise with people that some bigot on cnbc calls imperfect doesn't that say that she is saying god is wrong?

ann coulter should stop speaking for christians as a whole and realize that what she is saying is completely out of line is basically committing blasphemy.

and to jon in sacremento, ca... i am no liberal, just a very offended jewish college student

The issue here is that Ann is basically correct, but she stated it very poorly. Christians do not follow laws, we are under grace. The apostel Paul ask the question, "Who is the true Jew?". He goes on to say that it is he who follows Christ as Messiah.

The Spanish Inquisition needs to be renamed the Roman Catholic Inquisition so people will remember that Catholics killed Jews, witches, homosexuals, Native Americans, Muslims and Protestants in the name of Christ. If you believe in God then you should believe such a being could fight his own battles. God would probably be insulted that such lowly beings such has Coulter, Bush, the Pope, and high level Muslim clerics would ever invoke God’s name

It sounds as if Ann Coulter would be more comfortable living in the Third Reich. She sounds like the next Ava Braun. I'm extremely offended and confused by her words- do people actually believe this? As a Democrat and an agnostic, I want to ask Christian Republicans if they agree with Coulter.

    a few things to consider:
1-If she weighed 50 lbs more, she would not be selling books, nor appear on TV-radio
2-100 years ago, she and other kooks, (left or right),would be down at the park, on a soap box, spewing their idiotic theories and occasionally taking a tomato to the head,,
3- I am a Republican, and she is using the party to spew her idiotic theories.

    How sad

It's unfortunate, but Ms. Coulter's comments are merely an echo of Christian doctrine. I'm sure that when she finished babbling, millions of Christians nodded and thought "Amen". Some people on this board may say that Ms. Coulter does not speak for all Christians, but as a Jew who grew up in the rural midwest, I can tell you that she at least speaks for a lot of them.

And to respond to an individual posts:

Wishing people to convert to your faith is not the same as wishing them dead. Is it anti-Semitic to encourage Jewish people to attend your church?

    Posted By Matt Dooley

Actually, yes. It is. The religious recruitment of any race or denominational group is a form of bigotry that promotes supremacy and exclusion, thus devaluing the cultural and spiritual worth of others.
Furthermore, Mr. Dooley, in response to your previous comment (Wishing people to convert to your faith is not the same as wishing them dead,), I regret to inform you that in the eyes of the Jewish people this is incorrect. We have a deep love for our heritage and we regard any attempt to wipe it out–whether by conversion or death–to be attempted genocide. This is evident in our holidays: Passover (enslavement), Chanukkah (assimilation) and Purim (murder) are all celebrations of Jewish survival, which we take VERY seriously.

Coulter was there to present her view. Donny was supposed to be there to explore it. She did. He didn't. Is he really offended that at least some Christians feel their religion is the "right way" ? Doesn't he feel that his own religion is the "right way" ?

I didn't hear her say anything about forcing anybody to do anything. She started out talking about tolerance. Donny needs to pay more attention to context and learn a little tolerance of other peoples views before he gets so easily offended. Understanding that we have different religious views and attempting to discuss them is not the same thing as using totalitarian rule to kill people you disagree with. Those who make this leap as quickly as many here and apparently Donny have, seem to have more interest in becoming "offended" then in really discussing the issues raised. Had Donny explored with her what in particular he thought was offensive, I could at least have considered him somewhat serious about it.

Not appeasement nor shouting down, but discussion and tolerance, will often avoid bigger problems.

Ann Coulter distorts Christianity and has no clue about Judaism, Jews have been persecuted for centuries, her comments are so inflammatory and rude, in the same breath she talks about tolerance then stating this country would be better off if run by Christians, Hitler had the same mind set. As a Christian I would like to apologize for her insensitive comments, if Ann would read her bible she would understand that Jews were the first followers of Christ, and also wrote the New Testament (Luke is the only non Jewish writer) Jesus was a fulfillment of the Old Testament, salvation as stated by Paul (A Jew) in the New Testament is first for the Jews then for the Gentiles, your comments are offensive to Jews and Christians alike, and I would ask that you educate yourself on Judaism and Christianity, show some of that tolerance you are talking about.

Like the 2004 Convention? I guess there would be very, very, very, few African Americans then. She is sad, its a wonder that anyone takes her seriously, but this is what happends when a Republican is in the white house. It becomes fashionable to be racist; what a waste of opportunity and power, sad, just real sad.

There are so many of you who agree with me that it actually warms my tree-hugging heart. At the end of Ann Coluter's life, I wonder if there will be anyone left who she hasn't enraged. Her eternal Christian sprit sure is going to be in for a shocker when no one shows up to her funeral. But then, if ever there were an example that things like "eternal Christian spirit" are a load of hypocritical, money-making garbage, it would come in the form of Ann Coulter's dead, universally reviled body lying completely lifeless in a lavish coffin, at a funeral that no one would ever go to.
