Coulter: We want 'Jews to be perfected'

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Conservative commentator and best-selling author Ann Coulter may find herself in the midst of a controversy for comments Monday suggesting America would be better if everyone was Christian.

Asked by CNBC host Donny Deutsch what the U.S. looks like in her dreams, Coulter said it would look like the Republican National Convention in 2004

"People were happy,” she said, according to a transcript provided to CNN by CNBC. “They're Christian. They're tolerant. They defend America." (Video: Watch Coulter's comments on CNBC)

When Deutsch responded, "It would be better if we were all Christian?" Coulter said "Yeah."

Deutsch, himself Jewish, continued to press Coulter on her remarks, asking, "We should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians then?"

"Yeah," Coulter responded, adding "Well, it's a lot easier. It's kind of a fast track."

"You can't possibly believe that," Deutsch responded. “You can’t possibly. You’re too educated.”

"Do you know what Christianity is?" Coulter replied. "See, we believe your religion, but you have to obey. We have the fast track program."

Later in the interview Deutsch asked Coulter if she doesn't want any Jews in the world, Coulter responded, "No, we think - we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say."

"Wow, you didn't really say that, did you," Deutsch said.

"Yeah, no,” Coulter replied. “That’s what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws. We know we're all sinners."

Deutsch said he was personally offended.

"No. I'm sorry. It is not intended to be," she said. "I don't think you should take it that way, but that is what Christians consider themselves: perfected Jews. We believe the Old Testament. As you know from the Old Testament, God was constantly getting fed up with humans for not being able to live up to all the laws. What Christians believe - this is just a statement of what the New Testament is - is that that's why Christ came and died for our sins. Christians believe the Old Testament. You don't believe our testament."

Deutsch continued to call Coulter's comments anti-semetic.

"No, no, - I don't want you being offended by this," she responded. "This is what Christians consider themselves, because our testament is the continuation of your testament. You know that. So we think Jews go to heaven. I mean, [the late Rev. Jerry] Falwell himself said that, but you have to follow laws. Ours is "Christ died for our sins." We consider ourselves perfected Christians. For me to say that for you to become a Christian is to become a perfected Christian is not offensive at all."

Ann Coulter does not represent Christians. The Christianity I was raised by would never say the cruel things that she does. They would not intentionally hurt the widows of the 911 tragedy just to sell a book to profit from. They wouldn't judge others. I am proud of my Christian beliefs. Ann Coulters are extremist to the nth degree. She mirrors the Islamic extremist view of supreme beings that all should be the same.

I have such a difficult time understanding why anyone would look up to her. To hear that the Republicans had her as a speaker really makes me question what they stand for. I don't see any difference between Ann Coulter, Adolph Hitler and Osama Bin Ladin...they all insight hatred towards differences.

Doesnt' this belong on Tabloid tv or the like?
Can't really see any relevance to her comments except the sensational value it brings her and her books. This in not a political story – nobody agrees with her.
    Get back to politics CNN!!

As Bugs Bunny say, what a maroon! She believes the RN convention was the pivotal perfect moment of history – what a clown. The west was neck deep in the dual disasters in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the U.S. was on it's way to fiscal suicide. 1000 years from now, when people asked when America started to lose its role as leader of the World, they will point to the last 7 years. it makes me sad.
As for Coulter's crazy comments, the far right, like the far left, is not known for its wisdom. Hitler tried to perfect the Jews (somewhere between medium well and well done). Coulter is farther along the line between merely Christian and conservative and antisemitic than i thought.
As for her babbling and backtracking during the interview, it's strange that you never see Ann and Miss south Carolina at the same time in the same place.

Wow, I LOVE this woman! She so graciously (and seemingly ignorantly) grabs a reeeally big shovel and just scoops as much dung-filled dookie onto the somehow (amazingly) deepening grave of the GOP's slowly-suffocating girl, Hope...I almost sense that she's secretly wet with hopes for the evangelical Right Wing to draft her for Prez...but alas deep-down, most are not evil people who support her divisionary, near-delusionary rhetoric. Is she sleeping with Cheney? C'mon, Tucker, break the story, we hold our collective wine 'n host-scented Christian breaths...meanwhile, back at the hill called Calvary, a liberal named "Jesus" wishes he'd be able to look forward to a roll-over in his grave.

oh forgot!!!!! Hopefully she will stay in the spotlight by making outrageous comments like this one!!!! You know the GOP (Grand Old Perverts) just wish she will go away! People like the likes of Larry Craig, Ann Coulter, Mark Foley, David Vitter, Duke Cunningham, Alberto Gonzales, Karl Rove, Bill O'Reilly, and Rush Limbaugh, are prime examples of what is wrong with the Republican Party. What happened to Republicans like Barry Goldwater, Dwight D Eisenhower, and Abraham Lincoln? Can the Republican Party go any lower than they are right now?????

Education, or the pretense of such, is no guarantee that someone won't be an idiot.
Anne Coulter is proof of this.
Anyone who would say something this stupid should never be allowed on TV, unless it's a comedy show of course...

    Hey Ann,

Following your logic, once can say that Christians are simply "misguided" Jews who have fallen off the fast track.

Or that all religious people are simply "imperfect" atheists.

Or that if you were "perfected", you might almost be human.

Why is everyone so surprised at Ann Coulter's latest low-class but high publicity bluster? The woman long ago abandoned any principles in favor of celebrity. A bigot is a bigot is a bigot- regardless of gender or how "Hot" she she may be.

Donny D, you sort of led Ms Coulter down that path where she'd be able to spew her
    brand of crap.
I wish the media wouldn't acknowledge her at all, so she could dissappear. Never argue with an idiot, you both look like after a while. -A Miller

Before we all get too excited about comments that are made by various people such as Ann, let's be reminded that the term "to offend", as used in the New Testament literally means "to cause ti sin". While some of these comments may be distasteful to some of us, I hardly believe that they cause us to commit sins. This is mearly another missuse of scriptual terms to suit our own positions.

Lets join forces and get her off the airwaves and send her into obsurity where she belongs.

The Greek scriptures were written in, duh, koine Greek. The English word 'offend' does not appear therein. The word "offend" may be used with the definition given above in the particular translation Lynn Gregory consulted, but there are countless translations of the Bible in just about every possible language including Klingon, many in English alone. In the various English translations, 'offend' may be used in any of its senses, or it may not appear at all. I suspect that Lynn Gregory was citing the King James ("If thine eye offend thee...") which is a monument of English literature, but which it is pointless to subject to close reading for doctrinal purposes. If you want to know what the biblical texts really say, you must learn the biblical languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek) and consider the various issues pertaining to textual transmission. Nit-picking over this word or that in the King James is beyond ridiculous.

The language of the King James is magnificent (thanks mostly to William Tyndale), but it is 400 years old and much of it is archaic/obsolete. Nor is the KJV all that accurate as a translation. For beauty the King James can't be beat; for influence on later Anglophone literature, it's number one; as an English study Bible, it has been surpassed by other translations.

How many people writing on this blog have actually studied the Bible? How many have actually considered the prophecies of the Law and the Prophets? In short, all these prophecies point to the Jesus Christ of the New Testament. Amazing, all these individual books(of the Old Testement) by many different authors at different times in different places in History point to Jesus Christ. Don't take my word for it, Study it yourself. Most people here seem to just be offended because someone is giving her opinion when asked by the host. Again, if you think she is crazy pick up the Torah and the rest of the Bible and study it yourself. This is America, you can believe what you choose. Many things Jesus said was offensive to people even though it was and still is the truth. Truth Hurts sometimes, but it can save you too if you accept it. If you want to say Ann is insensitive fine and this may be stuff she has just been told, but the fact of the matter is The Jewish Faith is foundational for the Christian Faith, that's the way God planned it!

    Actual Ann Coulter quotes:
"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."
"God gave us the earth. We have dominion over the plants, the animals, the trees. God said, 'Earth is yours. Take it. Rape it. It's yours.'"
"I think [women] should be armed but should not [be allowed to] vote."
“Don't pray. Learn to use guns."
"I have to say I'm all for public flogging.”
"My libertarian friends are probably getting a little upset now but I think that's because they never appreciate the benefits of local fascism."
I actually like Ann Coulter because she says what Bush most republicans wish they could say and not cause public outcry. You want to know what it really means to be a republican. Look to Ann Coulter. Like other republicans, her views are messed up, but at least she says them out loud.

The reason people like her make these kind of comments is to get her face in the news. Her, and all of her right wing kind are on the way out and they know it. I believe that the Democratic take over of the Senate was as much about the majority of us getting tired of a Christian minority trying to tell us how to lead our lives as anything.

Why does everybody seem to care what Ann Coulter has to say? Honestly, you ALLOW her to get under your skin. The best way to "defeat" a shock jock personality is to simply ignore him/her. Coulter and Imus are laughing all the way to the bank at the expense of your sensitive feelings.

Dear CNN: Wow! 2800 comments posted to this article.. This woman is so consistantly outragous I would like to believe she is just doing it for the attention. However, the actual truth is she is just saying publicly what most conservatives have learned to keep to themselves. I think rather than wanting Jews to be "perfected" what she really wants is for them to be "selected". When will this conservative plague of ignorence end?

My remarks have little to do with Ann and more to do with the opportunity to encourage people to think, study and choose what you want? Considering that there might be an eternity, would it hurt you to take some time out of your vapor of an existence on earth and find out for yourself if Christ is the Savoir he claims to be? Thank God you live in America where you can make up your own mind.
