Coulter: We want 'Jews to be perfected'

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Conservative commentator and best-selling author Ann Coulter may find herself in the midst of a controversy for comments Monday suggesting America would be better if everyone was Christian.

Asked by CNBC host Donny Deutsch what the U.S. looks like in her dreams, Coulter said it would look like the Republican National Convention in 2004

"People were happy,” she said, according to a transcript provided to CNN by CNBC. “They're Christian. They're tolerant. They defend America." (Video: Watch Coulter's comments on CNBC)

When Deutsch responded, "It would be better if we were all Christian?" Coulter said "Yeah."

Deutsch, himself Jewish, continued to press Coulter on her remarks, asking, "We should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians then?"

"Yeah," Coulter responded, adding "Well, it's a lot easier. It's kind of a fast track."

"You can't possibly believe that," Deutsch responded. “You can’t possibly. You’re too educated.”

"Do you know what Christianity is?" Coulter replied. "See, we believe your religion, but you have to obey. We have the fast track program."

Later in the interview Deutsch asked Coulter if she doesn't want any Jews in the world, Coulter responded, "No, we think - we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say."

"Wow, you didn't really say that, did you," Deutsch said.

"Yeah, no,” Coulter replied. “That’s what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws. We know we're all sinners."

Deutsch said he was personally offended.

"No. I'm sorry. It is not intended to be," she said. "I don't think you should take it that way, but that is what Christians consider themselves: perfected Jews. We believe the Old Testament. As you know from the Old Testament, God was constantly getting fed up with humans for not being able to live up to all the laws. What Christians believe - this is just a statement of what the New Testament is - is that that's why Christ came and died for our sins. Christians believe the Old Testament. You don't believe our testament."

Deutsch continued to call Coulter's comments anti-semetic.

"No, no, - I don't want you being offended by this," she responded. "This is what Christians consider themselves, because our testament is the continuation of your testament. You know that. So we think Jews go to heaven. I mean, [the late Rev. Jerry] Falwell himself said that, but you have to follow laws. Ours is "Christ died for our sins." We consider ourselves perfected Christians. For me to say that for you to become a Christian is to become a perfected Christian is not offensive at all."

Her remark is a good example why there is turmoil, misery, suffering etc. in the world. One reason we are different is for us to learn to be more tolerant and compassionate towards others. To bad she nevered learned or experienced that in her life.

Let's me understand this. We have a war going on in Irag which involves religion. We have genocide in many parts of the world...again involving disputes over religion and beliefs. And now we have another misogynistic, homophobic, racist, anti-semitic idiot getting paid obscene amounts of money to spew views which only further incite war, violence and mayhem. May the Lord have mercy upon her poor foolish soul. May she also become extinct as the social dinosaurs before her. Finally, may the Republican Party find the balls to weed out such asinine fools. The Lord that I believe in does not tolerate such hypocrisy in the name of Christianity.

This woman continues to show how irrelevant and useless she is in our society. She will sink herself, because she no longer has any concept of where the line is.

Coulter is a perfect example of so much that is wrong with this country. Media freaks who are extreme, polarizing, self-righteous and non-appologetic. Whatever happened to people being respectful to each other?

Wow, was she high? That is the most stupid, senseless, idiotic thing I've heard in a long time. Did you say she is well educated? Where do they teach that kind of very dangerous under the radar bigotry? Scary!!

I'm Jewish and I'm not all that offended by it. I think Deutsch is just trying to pretend like he's got something shocking. I didn't even know he was Jewish. He should change his last name.

Her statements remind me of the kinds of things Americans say to get out of jury duty. I don't think she believes them.

However, I do find it funny that she talks about the Jewish need to obey, when so many Western Christians, including herself I would imagine, who claim to believe in the Tanakh do not obey the laws contained within.

Why does the media give this person air time and attention? Her opinions do not merit any serious discussion or consideration. I, for one, simply tune her out.

I agree that Coulter is just looking for attention. She says outrageous things to be outrageous.

The person who posted that Judaism considers Jesus to be a prophet is all wrong, however. Jesus was an historical figure but not a prophet in the Jewish religion.

Why does the media, FOX NEWS in particular, continue to allow Ann Coulter to spew her hateful rhetoric via the public airwaves? This right wing nut has a new book to promote and talking this garbage helps to make her RICH...and FAMOUS...and encourage her to say something even more outrageous the next time. Ann Coulter is not a legitimate journalist or political commentator. She is a looney hatemonger who has NO PLACE on our television screens! She needs to be faced down...vigorously confronted and condemned for her bigoted speech then finally IGNORED by the print and tv media. Both left and right decried the words of the Iranian president. How different are those of Ann Coulter? Don't make this racist ideologue any wealthier than she already is! She should not be given a platform, by so called "fair and balanced" news organizations, to spout her hate filled rantings and profit by them.

    Please people!

Ann Coulter wouldn't be a Christian if she didn't believe what she said, just like Donny Deutsch wouldn't be a Jew if he did believe what she said.

Whether by saying what she said she is calling for the abolition of Judaism or any other religion can certainly be debated. (Though knowing something of Christianity and the belief that all men are free to choose, I wouldn't think that she is, if she is a true believer.) And even if she was, could one not make the same argument for any one who would purport adherence to almost any religion and its tenets?

So, "crucify" her if you want. In doing so, however, please realize the hypocrisy in so doing. And please take the time to contemplate what it means to believe anything, especially when it comes to religion.

Why do you news people give this idiot a voice? In one sentence she claims that her sort of republican conservative Christian is “ tolerant” and a little further on she suggests that America would be a better place if we were all Christians. I suppose she would like it better if we were all white and all of Anglo-Saxon heritage, and all of the protestant faith. Clearly Ms. Coulter does not understand the history of her own nation let alone the true teachings of Christian belief.

It seems, and I’m speaking as a life long Christian, that our dear Ms. Coulter simply does not understand what Christianity is all about. I am a most forgiving soul, but I must say that I am wholly offended by these outrageous comments. Perhaps someone ought to catch up with her and explain the precepts of Jesus of Nazareth and the foundation of Christian belief; on her way to the Bund meeting of course.

Clearly she meant to offend by her comments and create yet another whirlwind of controversy surrounding her name. This seems to be the accepted method of selling books or increasing ones fame these days. It is a great shame when an admittedly controversial host like Don Imus, who has done a great deal of good in the world with his charity programs for terminally ill children, can be publicly crucified for his ill advised statement with little or no forgivness from the powers that be. While Ms. Coulter’s reprehensible comments have invited a plethora of support from conservative pundits, all attempting to explain that she really did not say what she said and she of course did not mean it to be offensive even though she did not really say those things at all. This person, and I use the term with the greatest possible latitude, is an ill wind, that does no good for anyone and it is a great shame on the news networks who give her time and a platform for her Nazi ranting. It would seem that Ms.Coulter would find herself right at home in Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand’s Holy Inquisition. She and Torquemada could do lunch and then go to watch the afternoon floggings. “Tapas my dear?” “ I understand we have 1000 penitents to convert or burn today!”

Her contention that Christians are in some way “perfected” in the eyes of God is so lame it is laughable. No one is perfect in the eyes of God except for Christ himself. If she listens closely she may hear the sound of the supreme being laughing at the thought that she considers herself a perfect creature.

Finally with her stated beliefs, I do agree with her on one point, that she is on a “ fast track program.” However it is my belief that when she finally arrives at her destination, it may be a good deal warmer than she expected it would be.

i'm left of liberal and can't stand ann coulter at all, but based on the fact that she used the terms "fast track" and "fedex" in her comments clearly shows she was trying to a) get a rise out of the interviewer or b) be funny. the problem is – she just isn't very funny.
