Coulter: We want 'Jews to be perfected'

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Conservative commentator and best-selling author Ann Coulter may find herself in the midst of a controversy for comments Monday suggesting America would be better if everyone was Christian.

Asked by CNBC host Donny Deutsch what the U.S. looks like in her dreams, Coulter said it would look like the Republican National Convention in 2004

"People were happy,” she said, according to a transcript provided to CNN by CNBC. “They're Christian. They're tolerant. They defend America." (Video: Watch Coulter's comments on CNBC)

When Deutsch responded, "It would be better if we were all Christian?" Coulter said "Yeah."

Deutsch, himself Jewish, continued to press Coulter on her remarks, asking, "We should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians then?"

"Yeah," Coulter responded, adding "Well, it's a lot easier. It's kind of a fast track."

"You can't possibly believe that," Deutsch responded. “You can’t possibly. You’re too educated.”

"Do you know what Christianity is?" Coulter replied. "See, we believe your religion, but you have to obey. We have the fast track program."

Later in the interview Deutsch asked Coulter if she doesn't want any Jews in the world, Coulter responded, "No, we think - we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say."

"Wow, you didn't really say that, did you," Deutsch said.

"Yeah, no,” Coulter replied. “That’s what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws. We know we're all sinners."

Deutsch said he was personally offended.

"No. I'm sorry. It is not intended to be," she said. "I don't think you should take it that way, but that is what Christians consider themselves: perfected Jews. We believe the Old Testament. As you know from the Old Testament, God was constantly getting fed up with humans for not being able to live up to all the laws. What Christians believe - this is just a statement of what the New Testament is - is that that's why Christ came and died for our sins. Christians believe the Old Testament. You don't believe our testament."

Deutsch continued to call Coulter's comments anti-semetic.

"No, no, - I don't want you being offended by this," she responded. "This is what Christians consider themselves, because our testament is the continuation of your testament. You know that. So we think Jews go to heaven. I mean, [the late Rev. Jerry] Falwell himself said that, but you have to follow laws. Ours is "Christ died for our sins." We consider ourselves perfected Christians. For me to say that for you to become a Christian is to become a perfected Christian is not offensive at all."

The real issue is "should religion be allowed to exist at all in public life". All religion does, any religion, is perpetuate intolerance and violence, death and destruction, and hate. Religion does not bring peace and understanding, but division. Coulter is just one example of the mindlessness of religious belief and practice.

This chick is a loose cannon. I'm surprised the Reps haven't locked her up and thrown away the key just to save face. She doesn't know when to shut up! In my experience, having an education does not mean you are not a biggot.

From a purely doctrinal perspective, she makes a correct statement regarding Christians views of themselves and Jews. The hipocracy that I see is that a Christian gets lambasted for stating her views, and labeled as a racist, Anti-Semite, homophobe, etc. On the other hand, when anyone of the aforementioned group(s) state their beliefs, or even criticize Christianity, they are allowed to express their views as a matter of free speech, and even as a way of setting some sort of record straight. I guess the lesson to be learned is that Christians (of which I am) are narrow-minded, and every other view, no matter how contrary to my own, should be accepted at face value

Why am I not surprised that this came from her mouth. I saw her on an interview on a national news show, and she flat out said the reason we are not winning in Iraq is because we are not killing enough civilians. That's right, in order for us to win we need to start killing the innocent people we invaded the country to "protect". How are they supposed to enjoy the democracy that they so obviously wanted us to bring to them if they are dead? How ridiculous. This woman needs to be banned from TV, radio, and every other form of media. She must know that everything she says is ridiculous. She simply craves attention and is not smart enough to come up with anything truly intelligent, insightful, meaningful, or worthwhile to say, so she says this kind of stuff. What a moron. She is a disgrace to the human race.

Ms Coulter seems to do and say anything, regardless of how outrages it might be, to attain some semblance of attention. At this point I am surprised that anyone would interview her or listen to her outlandish mutterings.

I've read many of Ann Coulter's books; she is very intelligent and entertaining, although she is merely, in my view, and political satirist.

In addition, Ms. Coulter makes many valid points regarding the methods in which liberals are trying to change America into a secular society, which is contrary to the intentions of our Founding Fathers. Freedom of Religion does NOT mean Freedom FROM Religion.

However, Ms. Coulter loses all credibility when she crosses the line and makes personal attacks. Nevertheless, I believe she does this intentionally to gain attention and sell more of her books.

Besides, how come political celebrities on the opposite end of the spectrum are not put through the ringer when they say outrageous and offensive statements, such as Bill Maher and that political genious Rosie O'Donnell?

Ms. Coulter should follow the example of other conservative commentators (i.e., such as Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, and Neal Boortz) and STICK TO THE FACTS without resorting to personal attacks. O'Reilly has told Coulter this numerous times on his radio and TV shows.

Wow, ya know Coulter was looking to get a reaction from her comments or she can't explain her religion very well. She could of explained the differences so much better. "We have the fast track program" ????? Is she talking about Grace saving you, that you only have to except Christ and boom your on the fast track. You mean she actually believes like other erronious religions that saying a few words saves you, makes you perfect. Grace alone will not save you, B.S. for sure. "we just want Jews to be perfected" "We know we're all sinners" Wait, first she is perfect because of Christ, now she's a sinner. She doesn't even understand her own faith. Oh, speaking of faith, it is through Christ, not because of Christ, that we are saved. Meaning that it is faith, actions, and grace that determines your salvation.

I can see what she is trying to say and in a way she is correct, but if it is not what you belive you will be offended. I would be to she is trying to say that Jews are wrong for not beliving. They could say the same for Christians. Because that is there belief. She is not being anit samitic in my oppinion. If she was she would not have gone on the show. She expressing her beliefs and trying to convert others. She is just not going about it the right way.

I don't Coulter really believes anything she says. She just likes whatever will get her attention and will or say anything to get it. Why people would actually buy anything she writes I have no clue.

Ann Coulter is the Brittney Spears of the upper class. Both need the media for attention like a drug, so they don't care how they get their mission accomplished. Ann Coulter likes to be outrages, she must have too much testosterone, watch next she will grow something between her legs to go along with her agressive nature. The last garbage out of her mouth is just and other Brittney "Oops forgot the underwear!

I am Jewish and this isn't offensive... it's hilarious. Ann Coulter is always pulling this kind of stuff. She's being ridiculous for the sake of being ridiculous. Some right wing nut heads agree with her, but she's just saying it to say it. Just to be Ann Coulter. She shouldn't be fired... let's not break the 1st ammendment guys. If ya don't like it... don't listen. You should be secure enough in your religion that you don't get offended by ridiculous statements from anyone. Some people are ignorant, your not gonna change it. Anyways, way to go Ann, continually push the envelope... and way to go Deutsch for calling her on it and actually making her retrace a little bit at the end, not many do that. Great interview, great drama, great controversy, but socially irrelevant...

She's a joke – but unfortunately, as evident in some of these posts, some people take her seriously.

We can only hope this one pushed her over the line and she'll go away.

It's amazing how easily we fragile Americans are offended these days. Somebody says something with which you don't agree, and all of a sudden you're on the talkshow circuit crying about how offensive the words were. Wake up America! NOWHERE in the Constitution does it say you have the right not to be offended and the right only to be presented with viewpoints agreeable to your small view of the world. That Deutsch would be "personally offended" as a journalist by the comments of someone he presumably invited for an interview is patently ridiculous. What a laughingstock he has made himself! If his sensibilities are so fragile and easily bruised, perhaps he should take a long, long leave of absence from his job and seek counseling on how to be an emotional grown-up. The fact that this story is even making the news is laughable!

Coulter has chronic "foot in mouth syndrome". When will we, as a mixed society, realize to ignore people such as Coulter who demonstates that she has no clue about what she is talking about. People just keep feeding the fire. Freedom of speach is wonderful, but some just have to learn to bite their tounge and think before they speak.

I am a Jewish person living in Florida. I don't understand all the hoopla about Ann Coulter's statements. When will minority religions in this country realize that the United States is a CHRISTIAN COUNTRY, founded on CHRISTIAN PRINCIPALS. As a minority in this country, I believe that Jewish people do not have the right to muzzle the feelings of the majority....unless these feelings infringe on our rights and freedom of religion. Ann Coulter is not forcing me to accept Christianity. She is simply stating her opinion. In response to the person who commented that she was discriminated against in school and told she would burn in hell....my advise to her is to move to a city that has a larger Jewish population, with Jewish schools, synagogues, and after school programs that they can attend. These institutions were created BY Jews, FOR Jews. It is a waste of time, and frankly bad manners as a minority in a Christian country, to be offended by people like Ann Coulter. Tell Mr. Deutsche that as long as she is not FORCING him to accept Christianity, his time (and that of other liberal Jews in this country) is better spend in synagogue and learning Torah rather than being offended by Ann Coulter

I usually don't write about these things, but this person is so misguided that I felt I had to. If she wants to live in a country where freedom of religon is not available to the population maybe she should move to Myanmar. Alternatively, maybe she should go over to Iran, and tell the Muslims over there to give a speech. I don't think she would come back, and it would be a big win for the rest of us. This is so misguided, and a snapshot of idiots who are hiding behind religon to spew hate and intolerance. May she burn in hell.
