Coulter: We want 'Jews to be perfected'

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Conservative commentator and best-selling author Ann Coulter may find herself in the midst of a controversy for comments Monday suggesting America would be better if everyone was Christian.

Asked by CNBC host Donny Deutsch what the U.S. looks like in her dreams, Coulter said it would look like the Republican National Convention in 2004

"People were happy,” she said, according to a transcript provided to CNN by CNBC. “They're Christian. They're tolerant. They defend America." (Video: Watch Coulter's comments on CNBC)

When Deutsch responded, "It would be better if we were all Christian?" Coulter said "Yeah."

Deutsch, himself Jewish, continued to press Coulter on her remarks, asking, "We should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians then?"

"Yeah," Coulter responded, adding "Well, it's a lot easier. It's kind of a fast track."

"You can't possibly believe that," Deutsch responded. “You can’t possibly. You’re too educated.”

"Do you know what Christianity is?" Coulter replied. "See, we believe your religion, but you have to obey. We have the fast track program."

Later in the interview Deutsch asked Coulter if she doesn't want any Jews in the world, Coulter responded, "No, we think - we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say."

"Wow, you didn't really say that, did you," Deutsch said.

"Yeah, no,” Coulter replied. “That’s what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws. We know we're all sinners."

Deutsch said he was personally offended.

"No. I'm sorry. It is not intended to be," she said. "I don't think you should take it that way, but that is what Christians consider themselves: perfected Jews. We believe the Old Testament. As you know from the Old Testament, God was constantly getting fed up with humans for not being able to live up to all the laws. What Christians believe - this is just a statement of what the New Testament is - is that that's why Christ came and died for our sins. Christians believe the Old Testament. You don't believe our testament."

Deutsch continued to call Coulter's comments anti-semetic.

"No, no, - I don't want you being offended by this," she responded. "This is what Christians consider themselves, because our testament is the continuation of your testament. You know that. So we think Jews go to heaven. I mean, [the late Rev. Jerry] Falwell himself said that, but you have to follow laws. Ours is "Christ died for our sins." We consider ourselves perfected Christians. For me to say that for you to become a Christian is to become a perfected Christian is not offensive at all."

I don't think she conveyed her message very well, which is unusual for her – love her or hate her. What she said is in no way anti-semitic. It is no different than any other religious belief in that if one is convinced that what he believes is correct, he wants others to join him. That's not hate – in fact it is quite the opposite.

However, her understanding of Biblical Christianity is not quite correct. It does not teach that all Jews go to heaven. God has a plan for restoring Israel but entrance to heaven is the same for everyone regardless of race/nationality, etc. Salvation comes by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

christians are tolerant? ha ha ha

is there anyone left who doesn't realize coulter says these things to sell books? like deutsch pointed out, she is far too educated about democracy, american history, etc. to really believe such fascist things.

she really just needs to go away. we shouldn't give attention to someone with so little self-respect.

This is perfect. I totally agree with Coulter. This is what America needs. To be a patriotic American, you have to become Christian since America was founded on Christian values. The problem with today's America is that the Jews want to protect Israel at the expense of America, Muslims want to protect Arab nations, Hindus want to protect India, Buddhist want to protect Myanmar or Thailand. The only ones who care about America are the Christians. I would like to appeal to everyone reading this piece to embrace Coulter's ideas. This is good for America.

Ann has it right on, although not the best delivery... We are put here to tell the truth, to Gentile and to Jew. It is not our job to force anyone's decision, but each person will have that opportunity to make their own decision after knowing the truth.
It is in love - we want no one to die.
This is a free gift that no one can lay sole claim to. And just like a discarded birthday present, the gift that is never claimed, is not obtained.
As is obvious from so many of the comments, some seem secure in their choice. I can just say, Choose wisely.

Just more proof that Ann Coulter is willing to say anything to get a attention. She may the credentials of an educated person but she doesn't have the skills to use them as such. Instead she's tyring to be some kind of Howard Stern for the neocons. I'll be glad when she played out and long forgotten.

(anyone think it's possible the hormone therapy is affecting Ann's poor little mind. if you don't know what i'm refering to note Ann's adams apple and large hands)

Oh for crying out loud... why does the media give this foolish woman a platform. She is doing the verbal equivalent to flashing her breasts. She has nothing of any value to put into the national/international discourse so she just says anything to be offensive, shocking and attention-getting.

I think if the media – and anyone interviewing this lame excuse for a pundit/writer simply treated her a comedic act and laughed as she shoves her foot, calf and leg down her throat, she'd be more entertaining. Or, the media could just turn away from her and find people with intelligent, constructive opinions and ideas... we are all BORED of the Ann Coulters of the world...NEXT!

Too educated? They're talking about religious beliefs. Some people believe one thing, others believe something else. Of course Christianity would be better to a Christian just like Judaism would be better to a Jew. I don't see the controversy here. You could call any Christian an anti-semite, I suppose, just for being a Christian. It's not about being PC, it's about personal beliefs – get a grip, people.

First off, I'm Jewish. I think that the attacks on Coulter for these comments are outrageous. Saying that you believe your religion is the best one and that you hope others will adopt it is not bigotry.

If you want an example of real bigotry, read the true life story of Al Sharpton. He encouraged violent acts against Jewish store owners in black areas of NY City, resulting in at least one riot and several murders. He referred to us on his radio program as "blood sucking Jews".

Or read the writings of Black Muslim leader Louis Farakhan, who also vilifies and calls for violence against Jews.

Ann Coulter did none of those things, and I dont even consider her comments offensive or ignorant.

For those of you who are railing against it, how many times have you participated in demonstrations against black muslim speakers who come to your cities and colleges? Or against Al Sharpton? How many letters have you written, either on the internet or to the editor of your local paper about THAT bigotry, which is often associated with violence against Jews?

Most of you who criticize Ann Coulter, both Jews and Christians are hippocrates.

...The reason why it would be better if all Americans were Christians because these are the core of Christianity's values: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

    To "Me" from Fullerton, CA:

Those are not Christian values. Those are HUMAN values. Claiming them as Christian does not make your religion valid. Did those values exist before Christianity? You bet they did.

And is anybody really fooled by this? This is just another marketing tool to sell her books and keep her in the limelight. Soundbites are perfect for this. Out of context and at face value, she is what she is, a bigotted, white supremicist pin-up girl. But I'm sure a much longer explanation will be forthcoming in her new book entitled, "C'mon Jews, Join the Fast Track to Heaven". I hope FedEx sues her by the way.

The real issue is why is she allowed on coporate TV and why are advertisers on these programs insisting she be taken off or they will not advertise on these stations. If I see her on any network I will not view that network any more and let the network know that. If we all do this and let the networks know what we think this vile poor excuse for a human being will go away.

Ann Coulter's statement is consistent with the historic position of the Roman Catholic Church, prior to the Second Vatican council, e.g., there is no slavation outside the Church. Many Catholics still beleve that.

It would be a great help to humanity as a whole if the most powerful country on earth could find a way to separate religion and politics. Ann Coulter is a nut job, to be sure, and her words are hardly helpful in bridging the divisions among Americans. However, the real problem is the inability of politicians to preach and promote secularism, since it is apparent that pandering to Christians is necessary if you want to win power. Separation of Church and State? Where???

I would like to know what guidelines the moderator is using. My appeal to others to listen to what she is ACTUALLY saying was stricken, while all of this vitriolic stuff is allowed. Can't make any sense at all of that. I guess there's no room here for someone who wants to be a peacemaker : (

If you're going to quote Rudolph Bultmann and other liberal Christian scholars, watch the "sound" bites and quote them fairly. In spite of the fact that Bultmann did not think it was easy to reconstruct the actual life and sayings of Jesus, he believed in Christ and trusted in the grace of God.

Coulter – what a nasty little nazi. How on earth do her and Limbaugh still make headlines? Oh yeah, many many rather dim conservatives actually listen to what these two idiots have to say. Unbelievable...

In fact, America would be better off, as would the world, if there was NO religion, including Christianity. Religious beliefs are responsible for most wars and hate crimes. There is absolutely no evidence to support the existance of god. It's like believing in Santa Claus and Tooth Fairy. At least those two myths are mostly harmless, though.

She is trying to make headlines. She's a conservative shock jock...and it's working. Liberals go bananas over her and she wins. Just look at all the comments below. You are making her and Rush Limbaugh more powerful if you get riled-up over them. You have to ignore these people and Liberals are unable to do this...

Absolutely incredible. The neo-cons have never even tried to disguise the fact that they are neo-Nazis, so no one should be surprised that their Idiot Queen would so blythely say something so heinous on national television.

And people wonder why Europe is rejecting Christianity for secularism....

There is a big difference between being educated and being wise. Wisdom comes from understanding of ones education. It is obvious that Ann is a simple wit. She has no understanding of things past, present, or future. Moreover, Ann is not a Christian and not to be idolized, as it seems some folks do. She does not determine what a Christian is or is not. Ann is gravely mistaken if she thinks she can throw up her hands as confess her sins and be saved. Years of negativity, slander, false truths, empty pride, vanity, racism, greed, cannot so easily be washed away. There is LIGHT and there is DARK and Ann has chosen her path long ago. I wish her the best of luck on her journey.

Is Ann for real!!What a nut job! This is why I am ashamed of being a Republican. This is certainly not the party of Lincoln that my father introduced me to , one of tolerance and small government. This undermines the dialogue that is needed to include all faiths in a peacful coexistence.
