Coulter: We want 'Jews to be perfected'

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Conservative commentator and best-selling author Ann Coulter may find herself in the midst of a controversy for comments Monday suggesting America would be better if everyone was Christian.

Asked by CNBC host Donny Deutsch what the U.S. looks like in her dreams, Coulter said it would look like the Republican National Convention in 2004

"People were happy,” she said, according to a transcript provided to CNN by CNBC. “They're Christian. They're tolerant. They defend America." (Video: Watch Coulter's comments on CNBC)

When Deutsch responded, "It would be better if we were all Christian?" Coulter said "Yeah."

Deutsch, himself Jewish, continued to press Coulter on her remarks, asking, "We should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians then?"

"Yeah," Coulter responded, adding "Well, it's a lot easier. It's kind of a fast track."

"You can't possibly believe that," Deutsch responded. “You can’t possibly. You’re too educated.”

"Do you know what Christianity is?" Coulter replied. "See, we believe your religion, but you have to obey. We have the fast track program."

Later in the interview Deutsch asked Coulter if she doesn't want any Jews in the world, Coulter responded, "No, we think - we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say."

"Wow, you didn't really say that, did you," Deutsch said.

"Yeah, no,” Coulter replied. “That’s what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws. We know we're all sinners."

Deutsch said he was personally offended.

"No. I'm sorry. It is not intended to be," she said. "I don't think you should take it that way, but that is what Christians consider themselves: perfected Jews. We believe the Old Testament. As you know from the Old Testament, God was constantly getting fed up with humans for not being able to live up to all the laws. What Christians believe - this is just a statement of what the New Testament is - is that that's why Christ came and died for our sins. Christians believe the Old Testament. You don't believe our testament."

Deutsch continued to call Coulter's comments anti-semetic.

"No, no, - I don't want you being offended by this," she responded. "This is what Christians consider themselves, because our testament is the continuation of your testament. You know that. So we think Jews go to heaven. I mean, [the late Rev. Jerry] Falwell himself said that, but you have to follow laws. Ours is "Christ died for our sins." We consider ourselves perfected Christians. For me to say that for you to become a Christian is to become a perfected Christian is not offensive at all."

Unfortunately as a Christian, in a predominately Christain nation, it seems that we have utterly failed to articulate the message of Christ. Anne lays claim to Christianity, and who am I to say otherwise, however she does not appear to be able to articulate even the basics of her faith in any meaningful way. Perhaps she has been writing her diatribe too long, and is only able to express herself by short one liners, and catchy phrases. Her failure is in some part a failure for all who take on the name of Christ, and this is a very sad thought.

God's love is certainly all encompassing, and everything that is, is held together by the Will of God. However, quoting the most known of all Christian doctrine (John 3:16):

"For God so Loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal life"

This Love embraces the world, but there is only One path. To be a Christian, is to believe this and more. It does not matter if you are Jew or Gentile, God loves you the same, and has given you an option. Accept , or reject, it is your free will. God will not interfere with the exercise of our free will, but he has clearly defined the path for everlasting life.

Unfortunately, the Christian Right has married their spiritual life to their political views and goals, and it is very difficult for them to separate this unholy union.

A non-Jew can't even SAY the word "Jew" without immediately being called anti-semitic. Ridiculous.

Hi, we aren't in the dark ages anymore. How ironic too that she's attempting to be culturally relevant. FAIL.

People, belief is NOT fact! No one can prove anything, one way or the other, except that religion has caused more intollerance, superstition, hatred, war, and killing than anything else throughout history. Get a clue everyone. Go Darwin!

Ann Coulter is, in my view, the stereotypical blonde. That is, she has no functioning brain, and she is 100% eye candy for a guy's eyes. Pity she gets attention like this. People like her only cause the GOP to be driven further into the ground. No wonder so many people are changing parties from Republican to either Democrat or Independent.

It amazes me that they even let her on the air. She is seriously ill and deluded. As a gay jewish man I am now doubly offended by her. I guess there is truth to the rumor that Eva Braun and Hitler had a secret love child.

    Can you guys say "satire"?

Good. You've made much progress today. Now you understand Ann Coulter.

You may now go back to your regularly scheduled lives. There must be something more important to do with your time than to hate Ann with the same kind of venom you accuse her of showing others.

Any skinny bleach blonde with eyeliner that thick has a boatload of problems. She doesn't even need to open her mouth; we already know.

The detail I noticed that Ann said is that Christians are tolerant. But I can see how she is by insisting that Jews change their fundamental belief system. Come on, Ann you went to college, look up the definition of tolerant. It's certainly not what you are or what you say. There would be far less racism, oppression, anger and crime if this country WAS more tolerant. I hate to say it but it seems like Ann is dreaming more of a Nazi regime where everyone is conveniently blond and blue-eyed. Shame on her for her intolerant remarks and close-minded dreams.

Why is this news? Coulter is a brand not a person with a relevant viewpoint. She's a opportunist, not a pundit. She says what she says, because inflammatory = $$ in her pocket.

    AMEN, Sister!
All of you liberals out there who are always so ready to broadcast your belief in the "Freedom of Speech," yet give a conservative like Ann Coulter a forum to speak and you immediately cry for blood. Your pathetic, hypocritical intellecual bankruptcy is so obvious. When Democratic candidates regularly kiss the hands of race-baiting bigots like Al Sharpton, you say nothing. But when Ann Coulter gives her opinion, you can't wait to excoriate her AND blame all Republicans for what she says. I love Ann Coulter because she never fails to get a rise out of you liberal hypocrites out there. The moment you're willing to take on the hate speech of rap music and the race-baiters like Sharpton and Farrakhan, THEN you can criticize Coulter. But you'll never question the sacred cows of your own party, so screw you! What are you so afraid of? That the weak-willed, spineless, feel-good humanism Americans seem to embrace just isn't consistent with the majority monotheistic religions of the world? Give me a break.

As a token Jew, I felt it important to clarify that, contrary to some people's belief, we do not recognize Jesus as a figure of any standing in our faith (I believe the Muslims recognize him as a prophet). We do not consider him any more a prophet or divinity than we do Mr. Greenberg next door–he was a historically significant jew who lived around 30-70 CE. Nor do we recognize any place for the so-called "Jews for Jesus" in Judaism–and this is among Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstruction alike.

Though Ann Coulter does not deserve comment, the gentile below should learn more about Judaism before espousing views about the "traditional Jewish faith." This is not the first time I've encountered such misconceptions.

Since Coulter is not a theologian, I see her attempt at juxtapostion of Christianity and Judaism as clumsy at best. She would have done a lot better not to have entered into a discussion about a matter of which she sorely lacks biblical understanding.

As an independent voter who usually votes Democratic, I think the Democrats should rejoice every time Coulter opens her mouth like this, because when she does, she certainly drives more thinking people away from the Republicans, who often coddle her and support her. In fact, it would not surprise me at all if it turns out that Coulter IS a Democrat.

This is what happens when you never take a good look at yourself. You see what is "wrong" with everyone else. I am happy there is freedom of speech in America-I am even happier that in America I have the right to turn off any media that showcases this witch.

A whole generation suffered and died to get rid of Nazi stooges like Ann Coulter. I can't believe that we allow them such a large voice and access to the public airwaves. I don't fault Ann Coulter for spouting her Nazi doctrin, it is her right under the 1st amendment. I fault the TV network for violating the public trust in allowing her a platform to deficate her filth.

Tough topic, but I'm glad we have a right to say our own opinions. She is just being passionate of her faith and giving hope to people that their sins can be forgiven through Christ. She might have come off as offensive/blunt, but truth can hurt sometimes and I would think in our day in age we are strong enough to listen. So you have to debate it out...at least it gets people thinking and talking!
