Sen. Craig appeals ruling in sex sting case

Watch Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash report on Sen. Craig's appeal.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Larry Craig filed an appeal Monday in his continued legal fight stemming from a bathroom sex sting this summer.

The Idaho Republican wants the Minnesota Court of Appeals to overturn a judge's decision refusing to let him withdraw a guilty plea to misdemeanor charges stemming from his arrest in June.

"From the outset Senator Craig has maintained that he is innocent of any illegal conduct at the Minneapolis airport," Craig's lawyer, Billy Martin, said in a written statement. "Like every other citizen, Senator Craig has the constitutional right to make every effort to clear his name."

Craig appeals not because he think he will win the case, but because this allows him to have an excuse to stay in the senate longer – more salary and pension for a few extra months.

To me, he may stay in the senate as long as possible so as to embarass the republican party longer.

Fight it all you want, it doesn't change the fact that you are a lying hypocrite with delusions of grandeur.

I can't believe this guy. He's told two lies (with a third pending that he said he won't seek reelection, but my instinct tells me he will). Why can't Mr. Craig just do us all a favor and admit to being gay, and stepping down like a good politician?

This is so sad . . . stories about this man go back to the 80s, and just last year, several Washington insiders claimed to have had sex with him in bathrooms. It is impossible to perform the exact series of maneuvers he executed in the Minnesota airport by "accident" or because of a "wide stance". Give it up, Larry, you're a closeted homosexual. It's amazing that in the 21st century, homosexuality is still so villainized that someone is willing to go to such lengths to deny the facts.

This guy is a pervert. He plead guilty to just to get it over with nice an easy. YEAH RIGHT. Him liking young boys goes against his right wing bigot values.

Craig's staying on the public stage is – and has always been – the best scenario Dems can hope for in Idaho!

Oh, I dunno. Maybe Craig will become a hero to the ultra-Conservative far-right wing of the Republican party that believes gays are demon-spawn, but can be "cured" with love and understanding. There has to be SOME justification for denying marriage rights...

This guy should be an attorney or a politician with all the lies he's told. Oh wait, he already is a politician. That explains it. Everything makes sense now.

"From the outset Senator Craig has maintained that he is innocent of any illegal conduct at the Minneapolis airport,"

Obviously it was not from the very outset, otherwise he wouldnt be trying to withdraw a guilty plea after his latrine hunting became public.

I think Mr. Craig likes the spotlight. That's the only thing I can imagine that he would keep this silliness going. In or out of office, his influence in Washington is gone. His wife must be going through living hell. If the republicans weren't going to lose the WH in the first place, Craig is helping to ensure they will. And he keeps on and on and on, making a bigger fool of himself with every move he makes or word he says. Surely he must be getting some gratification out of it.
